There's a public Library built directly on the Canada/US border. Open to the public on both sides. They literally marked the floor in the build for the border. Outside the building is a hard border. You're expected to report to the border authority on either side if you take the exit to the other country down the block. There's also a road where the border is considered to run right down the middle. If you want to visit the houses across the street you're expected to report to the authority. Combined these two towns have a population of about 7,000, and each has 3 border offices. 1 set is for a major highway, 2 for "local" use.

Toycat: It's the SADC, you don't need to know more than that The Southern African Development Community, the actual SADC: 👁👄👁 It's called the SADR, and they're not "terrorists" they're the Sahrawi people, the natives of Western Sahara, who simply want to free their country from imperialists (first the Spanish, now the Moroccans) and I don't blame them, they've been fighting for independence for a long time now. Something to note, in 2005 the ELPS agreed to ban landmines and destroyed their stockpiles under international supervision with the Geneva Call. However, Morocco didn't sign because of the Western Sahara Berm, so who's really in the wrong? A fair referendum should be able to decide the region's fate. Maybe the region was Moroccan in the past, but it's clear that people (like them or not, they still have a voice) want change and thus a referendum should decide that.
I'm Israeli and a few days ago I went on this trip to Italy, and I was shocked by how different the McDonald's was. Absolutely everything costs money, ketchup costs 0.25 euros per this weird box they put it in, and bathrooms cost a euro to enter, whereas in Israel all of that is much more relaxed and if you ask for something like extra ketchup or to go to the toilet or something like that you'd be much more likely to get it, also the food is much saltier and literally just has a different recipe which absolutely shocked me, since you'd expect that the first thing that would be standardized in the world is the McDonald's menu. Also every single item is sold separately and doesn't come in meals, which means that it costs like 25% more for the exact same items, and also the normal McNuggets portion is either 20 (!!!) which is unfathomably large or 9 which is too small. Also I got heartburn and vomited from it so that's also a difference.

Enclaves and exclaves. The most ridiculous one I've found is the Navajo Nation, Hopi reservation and Arizona. There is 100 mile (160km) straight line you can drive that requires 7 clock changes during Daylight Savings because not all of the US or the "independant" nations within follow daylight savings. If you start just another 50 miles away in the next state, that number jumps to 9.

The situation with the Dutch Caribbean is quite insane actually. Curaçao, Aruba and Sint Maarten are independent countries within the Kingdom, but Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba are not. They are special municipalities of the European Netherlands. None of the islands are part of the EU though, even though all people on the islands have European citizenship. They do not use the euro and do not have to adhere to EU regulations, but they can vote for the EU parliament, and they can settle in any EU country. The latter is especially strange since even European Dutch people need a visa to enter a country like Curaçao, and face many restrictions when trying to open a business there etc. Borders are weird

16:20 You can do it in less, try McDonald's on Hungarian M1 motorway near town of Lével, just before border with Slovakia, then drive to outskirts of Bratislava, a borough called Petržalka to try the Slovak version, and lastly, go to the Fashion Outlet store in nearby Parndorf, Austria. According to Google maps this trip is only 67 km long and you can taste 3 different menu's, although you will need to pay for 3 different highway tolls. I've been to all of them but not one one trip. The Slovak one tasted the best.

I’m American and I’ve only been to Canada. I went on a cruise to Alaska and went through U.S. customs in Vancouver before I got on my cruise ship. Is this sort of thing common, or only in the cruise ship industry? Is this just a special agreement between the United States and Canada?

The whole UK/Ireland/borders thing gets even weirder looking at cricket (but then again cricket does everything weird). You have the Scotland team, flying the flag of Scotland, and consisting of players from Scotland. Makes sense. England flies the flag of England, and consists of players from England... and Wales. Then you have "All-Ireland", flying a blue sporting flag, and consisting of players from the island of Ireland. Note the careful choice of colour and wording.

Actually you can access Western Sahara very easily via Morocco or even trough direct flights from Europe 🤷🏻♂️
I used to work as a flight instructor at Boundary Bay Airport, which is south of Vancouver, and quite close to Point Roberts, USA, and the triangle mentioned in this video. Not only the ocean there, but we would fly right over Point Roberts, USA, without having to contact any American authorities. I guess the Canadian controllers would let the US side know about traffic, and I'm sure the US side had an eye on their airspace, but as far as a Canadian pilot in the area goes, it's like you haven't left the country.
You should have done Croatia because the weirdest thing I found when driving there was to go from Split to Dubrovník you need to go through Bosnia and Herzegovina until they build their land bridge.
The most interesting such border involves the Republic of China (ROC) also known as Taiwan. China as we usually think of it (the People's Republic) (PRC) claims the whole of Taiwan; and Taiwan claims not only the whole of the PRC but also most of Mongolia. At what stage will this nonsense so and both "China"s accept the de facto case that the countries have been separate for so long that they have formed a new status quo.
@RayQiaoTW
2 жыл бұрын
The ROC’s claims are essentially void at this point. While they’re still in the constitution, nobody really believes or follows them anymore. Taiwan already acknowledges and accepts that the ROC and PRC are separate nations. The PRC, however, continues to live in delusion.
I think the border crossing in Cornwall Ontario may interest you. Theres a native reserve that in in Canada but only accessable through the USA (and an ice bridge in the winter). As well as Cornwall island, that's a whole different mess.
Northern Ireland is an interesting case because post-Brexit it is no longer EU territory but its' people are EU citizens. Guam (and other US territories such as Puerto Rico) are another case - people there are full US citizens but can't vote in Presidential elections or have representation in Congress, but that's tied to *residence*; if they move to a state and establish residence there they become eligible to vote there.
no way. i know where this was shot... I WAS THERE 2 MONTHS AGO! im ooh! that's awesome to see you got another channel. Canadian
Hey Toycat, I grew up near that McDonalds in Geleen and ate at it on occasion since I was little. I had no idea Maasmechelen even had a McDonalds. I do go there for petrol though.
The Western Sahara region de facto functions as an integral part of Morocco though, there’s some checkpoints and restricted areas but apart from that any foreigner can just hop in a bus from Marrakesh to Laayoune or Dakhla or even cross into Mauritania and back. the disputed status has no impact in the reality on the ground.
Fun Fact: firearm laws are super loose in Northern Ireland only on the condition that it's illegal to transport firearms from Northern Ireland to the British mainland

As to Crimea, the USA maintained diplomatic relations with Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania during the whole period from 1940 to 1991 when they were occupied by Russia. I remember when the USA was recognizing the newly independent former members of the USSR, President Bush had to remind the press as to the three Baltic states that we had never ceased recognizing them. So an illegal occupation of only eight years is a long way from establishing a new international norm.
