It would be interesting to learn if the stairs to nowhere and the doors that opened walls were located in the area of the house that had been damaged in the 1906 earthquake. If so, it stands to reason that this was Sarah's way of covering up the damages without actually having repairs made. Sarah was also obsessed with the number 13 and her house evidenced that. Staircases with 13 steps; 13 hooks in some closets; 13 windows in the 13th bathroom; the list goes on. Harry Houdini attended a séance there in 1924 hoping to debunk the ghosts myth, but reportedly, failed. Nice presentation of this wonderfully mysterious house. Still, I'd like to know more!!
