Sadly, both Alan Ladd and his son have passed away. Both made incredible strides in the film industry and are missed by their colleagues and fans alike. But how did they get their start in the film industry and what were their major achievements?
Alan Ladd was born in 1913 in the resort city of Hot Springs, Arkansas - far away from the glamour of the burgeoning film industry. However, due to the economic troubles of his childhood - his family eventually moved to California, in search of more opportunities and stable life. Little did they know that it was here where young Alan would make his name.
He became interested in acting during his high school years and that’s when he decided to pursue his craft as a career. He was discovered by a talent agent and soon signed a contract to work with Universal Pictures.
And he never looked back after that. While he did have to take on various odd jobs during the early years of his career, it was clear that he was a talented actor whose talents were being recognized.
He soon found that he had a knack for Westerns. He went on to act in some of the most famous Western films of all time. But he also had many struggles in his personal life - which led to his untimely death in 1964.
Alan Ladd had a son who went on to become a successful film producer. Alan Ladd Jr carried on the torch lit by his father to help create some of the best films in American cinematic history. He passed away on March 2nd, 2022 - almost forty years after his father’s death.

Alan Ladd's portrayal in Shane is unrivaled. His ability to bring out decency warmth and a moral code speaks to the talent of Alan Ladd. From boyhood to manhood this film has remained my number one western.

I also visited Alan's son David a couple of time & he had the belt that Ladd wore in ' Shane '. He allowed me to put it on & he took a photo of me wearing it. I met other Ladd family members - son in laws Johnny Veitch & Michael Jackson & also daughter Alana. Sue Carol Ladd used to send me a Xmas card each year. I am still a great fan & named one of my sons Shane '.

@@mr.blackhawk142 - The youngest of all Alan Ladd's children, David, born in 1948, was an excellent child actor and from my own viewpoint this kid surpassed by far his dad's acting abilities. In David's first movie "The proud rebel" starring alongside his father, you can clearly see that. After several other succesful movies he quit acting and later became a TV and movie producer. He is still doing fine.

The event in his life in which you said he was thought to have ‘accidentally shot himself in the chest’, is actually widely recognized as a suicide attempt. He had a problem with depression in his adult life, and so did his mother, who took her own life in the backseat of Alan’s car, for which Alan thought he had some responsibility.

I remember Alan Ladd more for his roles in Film Noir, And, of course, Shane is a classic. It could probably be classified as a western noir. I think he was underrated as an actor. The studio used him to make money, and I think he should have been considered for better parts. He never seemed to get them, except once in a while, and this added to his insecurity. When he worked with Geraldine Fitzgerald, he actually said to her, "I can't act." Say What!!?? Of course he could. The studio system chewed him up and spit him out. His death came too early. But people still love him. I'm glad his children survived longer and made successful careers for themselves. Slantja to the Ladd clan.

Alan Ladd was/is my favorite since a young boy, on through to seeing him in the 1960's and his last film that he did, and never ever did he lose that great explosiveness when he appeared on that huge screen. My large family of eleven love him, his son Alan junior just followed his father with the same great professionalism, etc. I always have supposed the truly extra finely talented actors as Alan & his son, his wife that was so greatly a talent in working with them...that made me, also made MILLIONS of others feel like we knew them somewhat...well, I hope so much they had much knowledge of what they meant to us in our entire lives; no matter when we were young or older, that excitement we got seeing the fine, fine material they so finely acted out for us and I, for all of us (at 79 now) think the same. Thank you all the Ladds for enriching our lives very much, yet today in 2023 since the early part of 1900's." YOU represented the great Golden years! ...P.S. Earlier this month I saw "The Proud Rebel with Alan and one of his sons, then "Shane," for the umpteenth time a night later. You live with us forever.

One of the best roles Alan did in film and I think of as maybe his epitaph was the fight scene between Alex Cord ( George Peppard) and Nevada Smith (Alan Ladd) in The Carpetbaggers. Magnificent! Rest easy Shane/Nevada, you are still loved.

In a way Ladd was kept iconic by the mention of "Mrs. Alan Ladd" (Sue Carroll) on I Love Lucy as she was allegedly going to appear in the Hollywood Don Loper fashion show and wanted to wear a dress Lucy was supposed to wear so she got the uncomfortable tweed suit that aggravated her sundlburn! Sue Carroll never actually appeared in the episode.

😊 I agree with most of the comments already written. However, I will state a few of my own opinions about the works of Alan Ladd on film. Firstly, Mr. Ladd's first major film This Gun for Hire was not mentioned in many of the comments. His heavy hand in this film may not have been to the liking of many fans, but still worthwhile viewing. Secondly, his co-star in several films Veronica Lake was a very successful partner on film, and enjoyable seeing them on the screen. Miss Lake was not liked by leading stars in other films for her lack of professionalism, and ability and training as an actor. But with Mr. Ladd they worked well together. Lastly, in my opinion if the fans were all aware just how short Mr. Ladd was it could have made perhaps some difference in his appeal. That could have worked in his favor though with Miss Lake for she was so very small herself. All in all he and his son left behind a legacy of successful films. Thanks to TCM their films will still be viewed by many fans.

Interesting video. Shane is a Western Classic that has been essentially remade several times with slightly different twists. Clint Eastwood's Pale Rider is one of those remakes. When I was teaching I used to use Shane as a study in character development as well as plot analysis as the points of conflict, climax, and denouement are easy for kids to identify.

Alan Ladd had a serious inferiority complex about the fact that he was short. However, his short stature came as a paradoxical attraction to the audience. This is because it contains the fighting spirit of a great human being who beat the handicap and climbed to the top!

Thanx for mentioning that rick blaine! I just Googled Ladd's height and he was about 5'6" tall. My dad looks a LOT like Alan Ladd, and he was 5' 7" tall. My mom's dad's cousin was Johnny Weissmuller, and I take after him more, bcuz I'm 6' even! It's a shame that most of us stray from God's plan for us and we get caught up in unfulfilled 'expectations' of how, or what we 'should' be in life! Methinx there was MUCH more though, to why Ladd died young!

i am a western buff. Shane like so many other westerns to this day (2024) - I watch over and over and over. I got rid of Comcast and I now have Dish TV. Oh my - Dish has so many westerns I can watch from sun up to sun down 24/7 - 365 days of the year. All the western stars from yesteryear are truly missed. They definitely do not make westerns today like they did back in the day. As they say - westerns, westerns and "Mo" westerns. 🤠🐎🐴
