Tengai Makyou is one of the greatest Japanese role-playing game series that never had a chance to shine in the West. Here I take a look at Hudson and Red Company's three games that started it all on the PC Engine--Tengai Makyou ZIRIA, Tengai Makyou II MANJIMARU and Tengai Makyou Fuun Kabukiden--providing some background information, introductions and why they're so important to Hudson, the PC Engine and the history of RPGs.
Thank you to Johnny Millenium the Happy Console Gamer for asking me to do this segment for his video, which forced me to finally sit down and complete these wonderful JRPGs back-to-back-to-back. This video was originally made for the Happy Console Gamer channel as part of a larger collaboration--link will be in the description! He asked for around five minutes, so I tried to keep this as short as possible, but as you see, "mission failed." I plan on doing separate videos on each of the PCE Tengai Makyou entries and beyond since I now have complete playthroughs recorded for them (and I love the games), so if/when that happens, I may remove this video...unless it somehow gets picked up by the almighty algorithm on KZread...but let's be honest, that's never happening on this channel.

    You'd think that with classic gaming having a sizeable amount of interest among people willing to shell out money for even minis and anniversary editions for consoles, and pay for the games on Switch, Steam, and mobile app stores that maybe, just maybe they might want to republish or remake these older games. Just about every KZread channel that covers JRPGs, among other games that were never localized, or had one that promised a sequel that never came out because the console was discontinued, so many people are wishing that the games might finally officially be made for their regions. Especially with consoles like the PC Engine where it can be rare to find a rom that has an English translation. But really, today, with so many ways to easily republish old games, and not have all the hardware restrictions and cartidge manufacturing and distribution issues when it comes to how to revise them, why not republish the games and see how they do?

    Tengai Makyō II is not only one of the greatest RPG ever released but also arguably the reason Square decided its future would be on CD-ROM (i.e. PlayStation) so its influence on the entire industry has been unfathomable. When you have more time to dedicate on each game, I hope you also get to explain the influence of Momotarō Densetsu on the Tengai Makyō series.

  • @ImportGamingFTW

    @ImportGamingFTW

    2 жыл бұрын

    That would make sense, I think a lot of the Super CD stuff in particular showed the superiority of the format regarding the direction games were heading in the era. As far as the Momotarou Densetsu influence, aside from the fun & funny take on Japanese culture and mythology and paving the way for more Hudson role-playing games, what would you say are some of the other influences? I've always thought of Tengai Makyou's closest gaming counterparts as Momotarou and Goemon.

I have a few magazine interviews from the Tengai Makyou team to read through as well, so hopefully I can go into some interesting development and design topics with the videos. Hell, if ZIRIA's English patch will be out soon, I might just skip a video on that game and go straight to MANJIMARU, since I'm sure the bigger YT gaming channels, as well as the RPG-focused ones, will cover the games to much more exposure--and arguably a lot better--than mind would.

    Hello my friend! Glad to see you've been busy, after you left Twitter I lost track of you and I saw you had made your channel private for a moment. Which I understood if you needed some time away. But I'm glad to see new content. I got to watch the Valkyrie and Aliens videos in the last few days and enjoyed them immensely. (and the Little Ralph demo video) Was super happy to see you still using the reference books I bought for you. ^_^ I also took some time to watch your recommendations video for the PSN store (PS1 classics) and you showed me games I still had never heard of (more money to be spent, lol) Glad you're doing well and thriving. We'll need to catch up some time, maybe skype or something if we can work the time difference out. Take care and talk to you soon.

    I remember being maybe 10 years old and going walking into my neighbors little arcade shack, and being astounded by a super colorful fighting game with swords and anime and ninjas and shit and flying balloon stages and lo and behold, it was "Far East of Eden- Kabuki Klash" Honestly a top tier fighting game that I didn't know what a part of this series until I was much, much older (probably like 15 years older). How does one play these on modern PCs??

    That's such a good fighting game--I knew about the game as well as what Tengai Makyou/Far East of Eden was, but didn't know about the connection until later as well. I'm sure there's some decent NEO GEO emulation for PCs, I keep hoping Hamster will publish a port for one of the modern platforms, but it's probably caught up in weird licensing hell.

    Ha ha, yeah, I had to keep it short. The way the original script was going, this probably would have been a 25-30 minute video at least, though I could spend an hour on each game. I'll cover them individually, but aim for 20 minutes or so.

    I thought Mr. Joe Hisaishi's first video game score was for Ni No Kuni. That's awesome that he started with this old series, though I'm assuming he didn't stick with it. If he _did_ end up scoring the Xbox 360 Ziria remake though (the last game in the series?), that would be pretty cool though! That 360 remake was the first _I_ heard of the series, and honestly it looked lame. Let's face it; Ziria 360 is REALLY underwhelming looking, but it still got some attention for being an early JRPG on the system... though it quickly got overshadowed by literally everything else. That early 360 JRPG lineup was a beast - Eternal Sonata, Enchanted Arms, Last Remnant, Blue Dragon, Lost Odyssey, etc. If nothing else though, that game did make me aware of the series in general and I ended up learning about the older, more charming series entries on the PCE and Sega Saturn because of it. Always a pleasure to see _anybody_ dive into any of these games on KZread, but this is _especially_ good - no one can beat an Import Gaming FTW video for stuff like this :) Although I'm absolutely checking out the Happy Console Gamer video on this series and am eager to see how Kid Shoryuken did with his segment too.

  • @ImportGamingFTW

    @ImportGamingFTW

    Yeah, in the original draft for this video I talked about all the remakes and ports, and went into the 360 game's shortcomings, but also the interesting bits as well. Eventually, after I'm done talking about the classic Tengai Makyou games, I hope to do a video on that one. Xbox 360 was a beast for RPGs and shooters (FPS or STG), and Tengai Makyou ZIRIA didn't make much of a splash when it came out. That being said, however, it's lack of success and limited print run has made it one of the console's most expensive games. Thanks for watching, and I hope you enjoyed Kid Shoryuken's part as well!

    A PSP release included all of the RPG games for the PC Engine (though the only english translation available for any game is the SNES patched version of Far East of Eden Zero, requiring a very specific emulator because the game was made with a special microprocessor chip; of one of two games released on the SNES, the only other being Super Shell Monster's Story 2.) I should mention that Google Translate is pretty decent at translating visual data, so you might need to have the phone aiming at the screen at all times. The PC Engine CD had some of the best RPG games (or at least the best versions of what other consoles may have had released.)

It looks to fun play too but too bad I can't understand and speak Japanese :( I even doubt Konami USA will ever want to do some kind of translated collection of this. Keep hope alive, if there's a revival in Japan, the way things go these days, I would be more surprised if Konami DOESN'T localize! Also, my original script for this video mentioned EVERYTHING, but would have made for a 20+ minute video, so I cut it out. You can see me show the Neo Geo CD game at the end, though. Perhaps one of the reasons I love Tengai Makyou is that it reminds me so much of Ganbare Goemon. Working on a comic? Sounds awesome, best of luck!

    One is the original CD-ROM2 retail release and the other is a "not for sale" Super CD-ROM2 promo that (I think) was given to adopters of the Turbo Duo...but I'll have to look more into that. Both games are identical from what I've played (game saves apply to both as well), with the only difference being slightly faster loading on the Super CD-ROM2 version.

    2:40 The names Jiraiya, Tsunade and Orochimaru actually come from a classic tale and 19th century novel, Jiraiya Gōketsu Monogatari ("The Tale of the Gallant Jiraiya"). They are also central in the manga/anime Naruto (looks like you haven't seen it?). In all versions (it looks like), Jiraiya commands a frog, Orochimaru has "snake magic", and Tsunade is a close companion. I actually didn't know this and was very surprised when i heard the names at 2:40, actually already at 0:45, which looks amazingly close to Naruto, also with the headband. I didn't know this yet even as a big Naruto fan, for some reason. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jiraiya

Too bad the PSP collection is extremely expensive. Even the second game for the DS is up there. It's more affordable for the GameCube, but... that version feels a bit cheap to me, judging by videos. I know you're really quite the gaming scholar and a big time aficionado of Japanese culture, so I'm surprised you haven't looked into Tengai Makyou. But yeah, then again RPGs aren't for everyone. I think currently in Japan the PSP collection and Tengai II DS run for about the same price. It's the Neo Geo AES cart for the fighting game that's pretty nuts, wish I had picked it up even a couple of years ago at a local game store when it was like $120 complete, which I thought then was even ridiculous. Anyway, glad you enjoyed the video!
