The Ten Best Fruits In The World

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

I've traveled around the world pretty extensively, and tried hundreds of varieties of fruit.
I'm often asked what my favorite is, and I fail to come up with one; I just can't decide.
But usually I manage to put together a top ten list of epic fruits which have blown me away. Some of them are quite rare and I've found them in remote places, while others can be found in temperate or tropical climate farmer's markets in major cities.
In this video I talk about eating:
1) Star Apples (Caimitos)
2) Nam Dok Mai Mangoes
3) Mystery Cambodian Fruit
4) Cantaloupe
5) Mamey Sapote
6) Persimmons
7) Nectarines
8) Tamarillos (Tree Tomato)
9) Watermelon
10) Mangosteen
Plus, The Blacklisted Fruit: Durian
Learn about eating these amazing fruits in my video.

Love mamey sapote. I eat it ripened and cut, in smoothies and also make a chocolate pudding out of it, which I also freeze and make my own ice cream (I use coconut milk instead of cow's milk). Also love the Nam Doc Mai mangos, I've had them a few times here in Florida. I never used to like lychee, but managed a nursery that had a tropical fruit orchard and I had to go around tree to tree to see when they were ripe, they kind of grew on me.

Persimmons (or Kaki fruit as they are called here) are certainly one of my favourite fruits, that they are now in the shops again is making the fact that winter is nearly here much more bearable (in fact I have some in my fridge right now).

✨I like the common stuff here in Hawaii. Mountain apples, star fruit, white or yellow guava, rosey Apple's, we have all types of mangoes here too. Sweet and sour sap, lychee, tamarind, papaya, young spoon meat coconut, . When my Dad use to go out hunting, he use to bring back wild grown mangoes, avocados, and honey tangerines ▫but that was long ago

Mangosteen are the best honestly.. they are so hard to get here in Berlin and you can only get them in the biggest shopping mall of western europe :D They are like 2€ per fruit but damn I still bought them a couple of times because they are sooooooo amazing.. really deserves the title queen of all fruits

I'm happy to see Nectarines made your list. One of my favorites! Cantalope is also one of my favorites, too. And Watermelon can be pretty good. I've tried a few Persimmons but not sure if I like them or not. And I haven't tried any of the more exotic fruit on your list. Some of them sound very interesting though.

We had a tree (now gone) growing next to my house and that's one of my favorite fruits.

I'm a clean vegan but not raw, but I'm interested in this. I live in Germany and fruits, especially the organic ones, are very expensive. And you said it yourself, there are the laws of physics, and I'm working out every day, so I need a decent amount of calories (1,80 m, 70 kg, lean muscular, every other day 10 km running in about 45 to 50 min, every other day an hour of strength training in the gym). Where can I get it from when stopping eating grains and legumes, and I don't have the money for 25 Bananas a day? At the moment I eat 100 gramms of Tahin every morning with my cereals (no soy milk, just water and bananas) for the energy, calcium and iron. Would be very happy for some tips. Maybe I will buy your book ;) oh and by the way: you two guys are very sweet together :)

This very focused almost only on South East Asia! Except for watermelon which originates in Southern Africa, most of these are strictly Asian. But in Africa, we have fantastic fruits and varieties too. We have around 170 varieties of bananas. The best ones - the finger long red or yellow varieties can be exploding in the mouth in a mind-blowing way. I never got anything good as that in Asia. We have hundreds of varieties of mango in Tanzania alone. Among the best are the nyonyo embe, the breast mango. You bite off the small nipple and press the juice out. Fantastic! There are some thousands of years old varieties in the western part of the country that tastes so good, also of ordinary varieties, that you simply cant stop eating them. Because of the altitude differences, we can grow anything from coconuts to apples in Tanzania. There are too many forest fruits that I can't mention here because of space and time.

Andrew, the reason you don't feel so great after that much Durian is because it's supposedly a "heaty" fruit. The Malaysians believe it's one of those "heaty" things if you eat too much of, you'll get "heaty". Kinda like if you take too much beef steak at one go, you'll start having headaches or whatever. The 'cure' we Malaysians use for too much Durian is to have Coconut juice right after the Durian. Coconuts are supposedly "cooling" so it counteracts the "heatiness". I have no idea how to explain heaty in normal medical terms. It's a Chinese medicine thing where everything is either "heaty" or "cooling". Too much of either will result in conditions like headaches, colds, upset stomach, etc.

The Durian and Coconut juice does the same thing. It is the sugar in high amount that is greater than the White sugar that caused the discomfort after. In South East Asian these two fruits are well known for giving people a heat discomfort effect on anyone who eat them. No one is immune to these two. When eaten in high amount is usually when the problem become more than just discomfort. The fruit you should use to counter these two fruits is Mangosteen.

Have you ever eaten medlar fruit? It is acidic, hard, and somewhat astringent until fully ripe, in the late autumn when frost softens its flesh. It tastes similar to apple sauce. Only downside is that it contains big seeds and small amount of flesh. It is common in Europe, at least here where I live (Serbia), but not sold in stores. You just need to know where is the nearest tree :)

Andrew Perlot You should try the Japanese Egg of the Sun Mangos, they have an actual japanese name that I cannot remember but is somthing like Taym ygo tamango, I'm definitely butchering that name, but it basically translates to egg of the Sun. Probably 100 times sweeter than the mangos you mentioned, juicier, and have a far more exotic and delicious flavor, and I've tried mangos from Mexico Brazil China all over the place and these are just almost too flavorful and delicious to be true lol. BUT they are kind of expensive and can cost upward of $1,500 per mango.

The American and Asian Persimmons There are two types of persimmons: astringent and nonastringent. Captain Smith writes about the astringent type, specifically the American Persimmon which has a rich, sweet, spicy flavor when ripe and is very bitter otherwise due to the presence of tannins in the unripe fruit. Tannins are a group of chemicals that occur in tea, red wine, acorns and a few other fruits before they ripen. As the fruit ripens, the tannins become inert and the astringency disappears.Colonial settlers highly valued persimmons because they were easily accessible and high in pectin, so they could be turned into puddings without additional thickeners or sweeteners. Native Americans used persimmons in gruel, cornbread and pudding. They supposedly used them with the sweet pulp of honey locust pods to make an alcoholic beverage. They also mixed persimmons with corn meal and processed, ground acorns to make breads, soups and stew. Eastern tribes also prized dried persimmons as a nutritious winter food. The word persimmon itself is derived from putchamin, pasiminan, or pessamin, from Powhatan, an Algonquian language of the eastern United States, meaning "a dry fruit". The American Persimmon The scientific name of the American Persimmon is Diospyros virginiana, which can be loosely translated as "food of the Gods from Virginia". One common name of this tree is Possumwood because of opossum's fondness for the fruit. The tree is native to much of the eastern and central Unites States south of the Great Lakes, from southern Connecticut to Florida and east into Kansas and Texas. (Texas and northern Mexico have an additional variety of American Persimmon, Diospyros texana, known as the black persimmon.) Oriental Persimmons Referred to as Asian, Oriental or Japanese, Diospyros kaki is an entirely different species of persimmon. Originating in China; it was introduced to Japan thousand of years ago. The first record of the seeds reaching the United States is in 1856 when they were sent from Japan by Commodore Perry. Grafted trees were imported in 1870 by the U.S. Department of agriculture and distributed to California and the southern states. It is likely that seeds also come to California in the middle 1800s with the influx of Chinese immigrants. This type of persimmon is now grown all over the world where the climate is warm enough for citrus: zones 7 to 10; the zones with the coldest winters producing the highest yield. The oriental persimmon tree is smaller than the American variety; 15 to 30 feet tall with a spread of 15 to 20 feet and is also long lived. The D.kaki can be multi-trunked or single stemmed. Native Americans have used persimmons in poultices to treat burns as the astringency tightens tissue and helps prevent the burn from oozing. The fruit is also slightly antiseptic and traditional American herbalists have used it to treat gastrointestinal bleeding. Oriental medicines use a decoction of the calyx and fruit stem to relieve hiccups, coughs and labored respiration. Tannin from unripe Japanese persimmons has been employed in brewing sake, in dyeing and as a wood preservative. Tea can be made from the leaves. The inner bark and unripe fruit have been used in treatment of fevers, diarrhea and hemorrhage. The fruit is used to make indelible ink.

persimmon (the mushy kind) is hard to find in american grocery store because...well...its mushy. just a little impact will ruin the whole thing, and when they are not ripe, they contain high amount of tanin and is unpalatable. So they have rather small window of salable time frame and requires a lot of consumer knowledge. That's why they're sold in asian grocery store, carefully wrapped in bubbles. and it's more expensive. The hard type on the other hand, can be easily found in american grocery store (at least the ones i go to)
