    SORRY, I feel you did NOT get the ending. The student comes back to school and won't leave her classroom because (by deduction) he realizes that his mother IS GUILTY. Several indications-- the opening scene when he proves that the .001 difference between .999 and 1.0 is actually irrelevant. They are equal. (he does an equation to show this) Secondly, is when he comes back to school despite being expelled it is because he knows the teacher is actually correct and she is "truth". And we see a tear dropping down his cheek. Third, when his cell phone is ringing, most likely his mother, he refuses to answer it. We can interpret this as home being no longer his sanctuary. And lastly, he figures out the Rubik cube which again, is math which is binary--right or wrong/ falsehood or truth. The Rubik cube is solved by algorithms, and most likely, metaphorically speaking --the pieces fall into place at home and he realizes his mother did steal the money. Subplot-- perhaps the mother did not have the money needed for the class trip.

    That's actually what was so disappointing...they never explained the video. Of course we can all speculate, but that's as far as we can go. Because Ms.Kuhn's denial seemed quite genuine, and I hate to accuse or suspect that someone has done something they didn't do!

    I think there is an underlying dynamic at play. The student Oskar is bitterly torn between feeling betrayed by this teacher who showed interest and trust in him, and his uphill battle to defend his mother at all costs. I think he comes back to the school, and returns the temporary gift she gave him to try and reinstate that connection they briefly had. Trust betrayed is a dismaying blow.

    It's interesting you two even discuss whether the secretary did it or not because the truth does not even matter I think, similar to Anatomy of a Fall. It is about the narrative that the school is trying to spin and how it backfires and hurts many people involved that they try to protect and Carla trying to do the right thing at every turn but fails. This film is pure escalation and so realistically directed that's why I love it. Already watched it three times.

    I disagree. The ending does matter as the theme throughout the movie is binary-- good/bad; truth/falsehood; etc And the film writer uses math throughout the movie to make the point because math too, , is binary--you either have the right answer or you don't! Here is my take on the ending. The student comes back to school and won't leave her classroom because (by deduction) he realizes that his mother IS GUILTY. Several indications-- the opening scene when he proves that the .001 difference between .999 and 1.0 is actually irrelevant. They are equal. (he does an equation to show this) In the movie, we have .999 "evidence" of the mother's guilt with the video and opportunity, etc. Secondly, when the student comes back to school despite being expelled it is because he knows the teacher is actually correct and she is "truth". And we see a tear dropping down his cheek. Third, when his cell phone is ringing, most likely his mother, he refuses to answer it. We can interpret this as home no longer being his sanctuary. And lastly, he figures out the Rubik cube which again, is math which is binary--right or wrong/ truth or falsehood. The Rubik cube is solved by algorithms, and most likely, metaphorically speaking --the pieces fall into place at home and he realizes his mother did steal the money. It made me want to scream at the end , but to scream at who? School is a reflection of the real world. There were already multiple thieves (the woman stealing the coins out of the coffee tip jar). It's done an excellent job at making these little moment spiral out control. It seems to be a thankless job but also put some into power trips. Its so murky in all the best ways !

    Thanks for the great discussion and for recommending movie in the first place! I did enjoy the movie. I had such empathy for the secretary, and found myself flip-flopping between believing her, and not believing her when she said that she did not take the money, she was so earnest. Also it was a small moment, but when Carla at a moment of stress, asks the female teacher for a hug. It was slightly intimate and personal in its action and made me wonder if they had had a past relationship or even current relationship. As you both point out the whole film, we don’t know anything about her personal life or sexual orientation. Also, it was interesting for the parent teacher conference when we meet the little boy Tom’s father, who is late to the parent teacher conference. I feel like that tells all we need to know about what his home life is like and why he is the way he is with his arrogance and bullying the other children. Looking forward to movie foreign film reviews from you both! ☺️

    Just finished watching it last night and absolutely loved it! This was not only the best thriller of 2023 but also a skillfully crafted thought provoking film that comes with social & political allegories. In the final shot of the film when the cops were taking out the kid who's still seating on the chair....depicts the way the system of an Institutional body or governance of any kind sometime impose certain decision or judgement on our children/students without much clearance or satisfying resolution over a growing conflict or chaos while the youngsters got no choice but to stand on their ground with a rebellious voice over the matter. The film demands some nice warm discussion as soon as the final credit starts to roll.

    The boy Tom caught cheating and he denying it, similar to the secretary being caught and denying Actually everyone being accused of wrongdoing vehemently denies responsibility in the movie. The one kid with the lighter, the teacher that says he didn’t coerce the two class reps for snitching, the journalists, Oskar for stealing the laptop, the principal for mishandling the accusation and confrontation of the secretary, the kid on his phone, and Carla herself for many things along the way

    Haven’t seen the film yet but I do not care about spoilers. Hearing what the inciting incident for this movie is hits eerily close to home. When I was in high school I was deathly and chronically sick from Sickle Cell Anemia & a stress ulcer that caused my absence from school. At the time I would occasionally need home schooling to keep my grades up. The front desk assistant had a younger child that was also ill from Sickle Cell and became passing acquaintances with me and my mother. She was quite beloved by students as well as other faculty so it was so shocking that towards my final year she was arrested for stealing a lot of money (reportedly thousands over time) from the offices petty cash. She was caught red handed on video in a similar way but her guilt wasnt vague or nebulous in any way, you could see all of her committing a crime that she reportedly had been doing for several years. The administration got so fed up with funds going missing they coordinated a sting operation and caught her. It was heartbreaking because outside of this she was a lovely caring human being and on more than one occasion she took good care of a an abnormally growing young freshman that was experiencing extra sickle cell pain due to the growing pains of going from 5’10” to 6’4” in about 4 months! I would often get sick and need to wait in the office where she’d call my mom or gran to pick me up and then resumed being empathetic and taking great care of a scared sick boy that was leaving the school. I often wonder what happened to her after she was fired? I still remember seeing her mug shot plastered all over the local news. So sad.

    The whole point of the movie is showing how destructive rumors can be. With the relationships of the students and faculty all falling apart over something no one can truly prove. I think they purposefully never showed if she was guilty or not so no one would get the satisfaction of being right. Just like most rumors have unsatisfying conclusions.

    The secretary did steal the money but will never admit to it to the point of hurting her son. Carla did not think about how her actions would hurt one of her favorite students so she now regrets her actions and wants to protect Oskar. Parents actions are always based on wanting to " appear" protective but their actions are often not founded on facts but rather gossip. In the end Oskar tries to stand tall and by showing up to class and solving the rubik's cube he is sending a message to his teacher that he cares for her. That was my interpretation.

    I might be in the minority but I believe there’s several clues that indicate both he and his mom stole. He was the only one of the children that didn’t show his wallet. He said he didn’t have any. Lukas also says pretty much that kids inherit parents traits, three, he causes all the teacher’s problems and proves he outsmarted everyone by showing her he could solve the cube (when he clearly showed her he didn’t know what it was).

    Yeah, but the point is. Remember, this is a movie...We as the audience, surely this isn't the "first" movie we've ever seen...how many suspense/drama movies have we've seen where the circumstantial scenes point to one person (as in this case, the blouse), and in the end we were all wrong. And it comes clear that it was actually something else, a mulnipulation of the video, or someone else actually wore the same type of garmet or something. Because after all, the Mothers denials were genuine. As time wore on, I came to be comvinced that she had been wrongly accused. Because in reality, when you're actually guilty, your mind does not have the intelligence knowledge of what an innocent behavioral response would be. How can you divise something that you have no knowledge of? If I'm guilty and I try to pretend to be innocent, there's obviously gonna be some flaws. Because I'm not sure of my actions, I only THINK I'm reacting correctly, hoping no one gleans my inauthenticity...I guess in the end we're supposed to assume she was guilty. But that goes against my principles, and I'm left conflicted.

    The end was very disappointing...throught the entirety of the movie, I was continuously anticipating an explanation of the "video." Although Ms.Kuhn's denial appeared genuine, someone had to have committed the theft. That was the cause of the whole matter. I hate when movies end that way!

  • @davidreames8752
    @davidreames87524 ай бұрын

    I hate that it isn't resolved in the end. I disagree with this interpretation. The mother/school staff member is NOT guilty. That's why the son was so defiant, because he knows it. That's the entire point of the fantasy sequence of everyone having the same blouse on in the school. It could had been anyone! You never see the money taken in the video, and no one watches the video from start to finish, and you will never know because the laptop is in the river. What about all the other petty thefts? Did she do them all? What was her motivation? This interpretation is totally wrong. The movie from the start was about being innocent before being proven guilty. At first that is how the teacher feels about the students being questioned, but then joins in the same school administration witch hunt and accusations and unfair justice, and unfair investigation procedures violating everyone's rights. It is about rights of privacy, and illegal search and seizure, and Miranda rights (if Germany has such rights) being violated. It is about being innocent until being proven guilty. You would all make lousy members of a jury putting everyone accused of a crime in jail without clear evidence beyond a reasonable doubt if this is your interpretation.
