    In reality, there's only one 'ending' The door just causes you to fail the simulation and the computer alters a few variables before restarting it. I presume the messenger ending does something similar. Speaking of which, has someone visited a messenger site after getting the Messenger ending? Does the epitaph appear if future playthroughs?

    Actually there are three 'Tower endings'. One where you take milton with you, one where you don't (either because you pissed him off or because you deleted him) in which case you just won't see the eye appear after the credits and one where you come out of the IAN building holding a cat (as shown on the game cover). That one unlocks after freeing said cat in one of the puzzles.

    It is. At first, what you say to Milton doesn't really matter until you reach a certain turnpoint/conversation where your answer will affect all the other conversations to come. In that important conversation you'll have to either tell milton that, if you manage to get out of the program, you'll make the humans pay for what they did or that you'll do what's best for everyone. Option A will make him start liking you (allowing you to take him with you, as shown in the video), option B will allow you to either piss Milton off by starting asking questions he can't answer or straight up delete him (elohim gives you a code to do that and then gives you super admin rights). There's an achievement for each one of those three options. And not taking milton with you will give you the same ending, only without the eye at the end.

    I was really dissapointed there was no ending where you would send that Shepherd guy up. He has been stuck up there for ages, waiting for your arrival, and he helps you to the top. At the end, with all the fans, I thought there was a way to make him fly around, almost against his will, so he would be the final guy and you would push a pressure plate somewhere, after which he would ascend and you would die. Then your higher sense of emotion and compassion-test is fulfilled and the world may be built anew with hope, as you proved you have a soul and a heart. The difference between person/conscious machine and object/dead machine would be doing good for no reason, simply because you love someone. A dead machine doesn't get that logic. The fact that you are destroyed and Shepherd may be part of the entire program doesn't really matter, your info can be transferred. Apart from that, I don't believe he's just part of the program, all he does is help, as if that would be a worthwhile addition to your training, accepting his help. It also wasn't clear all the way until the end that everything would die in that world, so it would have been too late to realize you were killing him anyway (and learn a lesson of independence that way). Shepherd is a cool guy, he did all the groundwork and he should have been freed from being willingly locked up to help you up there. In the end every player is a selfish bastard that leaves everything to rot, I wouldn't want myself to repopulate the world compared to Shepherd.

  • @GrayFalcony

    @GrayFalcony

    9 жыл бұрын

    RollingSlyFunk Well, I wouldn't really consider sending up Shepherd a good ending. Through the QR-codes we can discover, that all the AIs in the system began to come up with a certain philosophy after a while. And Shepherd figured out, that he just isn't the right one to climb the tower and get out of there, but found peace in the thought, that his actions will help his kind to someday do it. So even though he might not do it himself, he was an important part of it. So, "helping" Shepherd to get out is actually a rather cruel thing, since that's simply not what he wants. Forcing him to be the one to get out just means having no respect for his decision or his philosophy, taking away his reason to live (since he can't help other people, if he is the only one left) and putting him into a situation he doesn't want to be in. After all he is perfectly happy the way he is. It wouldn't even be a success for the Talos-project. It's questionable, if Shepherd would even be able to transcend, if he was forced to do it, instead of deciding it himself. The system after all keeps track of all the AIs and evaluatles them, so I think something like that would be noted. Also Shepherd would actually have to willfully insert the transcend-command and I don't think he would do that, considering his philosophy. He might just wait up there for someone else to come to do it. Or just jump back down to assist someone else. And even if Shepherd somehow made it out, he might not even be the right one for the job. After all he have only made it through because of you cheating the system and as he explained himself, his job is to assist other people in achieving great things, but not to achieve great things himself. And since he is the only AI in the world, there isn't anybody to assist.

  • @RollingSlyFunk

    @RollingSlyFunk

    9 жыл бұрын

    GrayFalcony I don't think you have to view Shepherd's character as as rigid as 'I want to help someone else, otherwise I am eternally unhappy.' I rather see him as a good natured character that got stuck along the way (don't forget you would never be able to escape without him, it's not as if he could choose to escape) and this enabled him to develop the idea that assisting is just as good and that he has to become selfless, because otherwise no one will ever get out. He learned this truth as he was way faster to the top than you (me, the player), and changed his views accordingly, encouraging anyone to climb the tower and be helped to not make his almost-finish completely useless. He just accepted his fate more than that he is the a completely one-sided hippie character that just wants to be a servant in my opinion. And on the other hand, eternal life also isn't such a great ending is it? You just get nuked and that's it because you fail the test. You make a good point with the way you look at Shepherd, but I don't think there should be only one 'correct' ending that is interesting enough to go for. Assisting Shepherd might not be perfect, but it seems more satisfying than the eternal life ending at least.

  • @GrayFalcony

    @GrayFalcony

    9 жыл бұрын

    RollingSlyFunk The thing is that on a lot of Shepherd's QR-codes you can read that he is perfectly happy with his situation. He doesn't even say, that he has no other choise and therefor has to live with his situation, but rather that he was in the tower and now understands, that he and his generations aren't the right one's to leave. I think his problem is not, that he got stucked and couldn't leave on his own, but instead realized what the systems purpose is (creating a human-like AI) and that - though being rather close - just isn't what the system is looking for. Following the QR-codes of him actually tells the story of how he was in the tower, understood the system and decided to help others before he was ultimately trapped by ELOHIM and Samsara, where you can later find and free him. One of the codes even says, that he is at peace with the thought, that his purpose is to help others and not reach the goal himself, and that this thinking is the "foundation of his existence", so apparently he is rather serious about it. Also Shepherd wasn't at the top faster than the player, but rather earlier. The whole process of the simulation is an evolutionary one, constantly creating new generations of AIs, trying to reach their goal. This process began in the last days of humanity is apparently went on for hundrets of years. The player has a version number starting with 99, Shepherd has one starting with 82, so Shepherd was created multiple years or decades before the player, so the fact that he eventually reached the top of the tower, doesn't really say he is more efficient than you, but just that he had more time. It even begs the question: The player pretty much reached the goal of the simulation within hours, something that no other AI before him (including Shepherd) managed, although they had way more time. It's also possible that we have the wrong impression of Shepherd. Of course he is a nice helpful guy, but we never really know, how "human" he actually is. After all the purpose of the simulation is to create an AI, that is pretty much human, which is a long process, that started with early AIs, that had no emotions or just went insane. It took many years and generations to end up with AIs, that are actually able to think about the world in a more human-like way. It's a process that ultimately created the player character, who was able to meet the systems expectations and be considered human. But since the process isn't just a simple jump from non-human to human AI, there would have been a lot of AIs, that were basically "half-human" or that had certain human characteristics without fully fitting the profile. Maybe Shepherd was one of them: An intelligent, nice programm with human-like characteristics, who just lacked a few aspects, that the system expected from their "chosen one". Well, the eternal life ending isn't really that bad. It's actually rather close to what Shepherd does. As mentioned, the whole purpose of the system is to create a human AI and it's a process that basically started with rather dumb or emotionless AIs, who just screamed all the time and weren't remotly able to ever get through the tests. That we later ended up with an actual human like AI (multiple generations later) is thanks to evolution. What the system does is using the principles of evolution and applying them on software (which is by the way something that we already do today in certain areas. "Evoutionary algorithms" are an example of that). What that basically mean is, that want a program to complete certain task. To do that, you create a "random" program, that is trying to complete the task. If the program fails, you calculate how close it got, to actually solving the task and use it's data in combination with new random parameters to create a new, better program, that will hopefully be better at the task. You repeat this process over multiple "generations" of programs, until you find one, that manages to solve the task (or at least get's as close as possible to doing so). And that's exactly what is done in the game. Create program 1. Put it through the test. If he fails, collect his data. Create program 2 according to 1's data, add a few random parameters and put it though the test. If he fails, ... and so on. It is mentioned in some documents, that evolution happens between generations, but not for an individual person and that's also the case here. An AI, that can't solve the tests, will never be able to do it. It's not like you can throw an AI into the garden and if it just is there long enough, it will become more human. If the AI's "mind"/programming can't handle the situation, it will never be able to do so. That's why it's important to create new generations: To some day create an AI, that will actually be able to get through the tests. And the AIs, who failed aren't useless, but rather an important part of the evolutionary process, since it's their data, that allows the system to create a better AI. So the "eternal life" ending doesn't mean that you failed the test and get nuked, but rather that you failed the test, but your data is still used. After walking through the door, the system collects your data about you succesful actions, saves it and uses it to create a new generation of AIs, that through evolution "learned" from what you did, but will hopefully not fail the final test. It's called the "eternal life" ending, because the things you did basically life on in the AIs that come after you. You are an eternal part of the history of their success. And that's pretty much the exact same thing that Shepherd wanted, he just tried to achieve it in a different way.

  • @PatchyE

    GrayFalcony I like your interpretation on the eternal life ending. You live on in the DNA of all your offspring so you continue to exist as long as your species exist. I never thought about the meaning of it that way. My understanding of that ending is that the so called "eternal life" is a lie and you are deluded by Elohim if you step into that door, because he don't want the process to end so he can live forever. (Of course if you step into that door you are unfit for purpose anyway since you can't act independently and decide for yourself.) You added a whole new meaning to the "eternal" part of that ending, which I think is quite interesting. (Sorry for possible bad English, I'm not a native speaker.)

  • @GrayFalcony

    @GrayFalcony

    9 жыл бұрын

    Patchy .E. Well, it's not exactly an interpretation I came up with, but rather what Elohim himself says. The whole "You shall live on through future generations and be remebered and death shall have no dominion over you"-part is basically just saying, that your "eternal life" isn't really the kind of eternal life that you might think of. A rather convinient thing about Elohims mental breakdown and him not wanting to die is, that he is actually still fulfilling his purpose. He was supposed to lie to you and in the end stop you from progressing and later, when he wants to life forever, he is still doing this, keeping the process going until someone overcomes and stops him. So Elohims behaviour probably barely changed. The only thing that is different, is the reason for his actions and how he "feels" about them. Also actually the eternal life things still is lie. Or rather the typical "Well, I never specified in what form you will life forever"-wording-trick. And while their is a deeper meaning to it, Elohim still isn't telling the AIs the whole truth, because he was programmed this way.

Fancy discussing the difference between sport and game (or any semi-trivial matter) for 5-6 hours over the course of a couple of weeks? Drop me a mail, I'll hook you up. :D Also in one of the discourses with MLA or Alex's recordings it is said that there's no answer to these questions, so yes, other than an exercise in rhetoric and a bit of stretching of a few mental capacities, there's little point in asking these question.

    pesadjo Naw, man. The character has to accept THEIR vices if they want to take MLA aboard, because the program is sure as hell going to elaborate on them to force the character into a state of self-doubt, leading to introspection and an evaluation of the correct choices. It's a bulwark against impulsive decisions, and a valuable one for the keeper of humanity's knowledge as Soma truly is. And MLA is designed to be this way (the programmers of Soma intended for MLA to be snarky), the same way Elohim is designed to be comforting, commanding, and a tempting force to compel the character to stay in that world. Reason being? To put the character through trials.

    The Tower end is so cruel to Elohim. It's a pity him and the simulation are erased. I would have made sure it could be started again to produce another humanbot, because our buddy here will be pretty lonely. Maybe with all the ressources in the library, he can find a way to restart the whole thing. Now, regarding Elohim, I don't see him as a vilain at all. A hidden glitchy room reveals he's really affraid of death and in denial about how the dam can't hold forever and they he'll due either by letting the Child go or because of the dam eventually failing. He's not a proper person, but neither was Milton. I think there should have been a way to upload him as well. Or at least a way let him survive in the EL servers, maybe even with a way for the Child to communicate with him.

I'm glad i chose the ending where you climb the tower, the other ones seem kinda lame imo. Like, I would be so disappointed if I had gotten one of those. I feel like the first ending you get in a game with more than one potential ending, is YOUR ending, and will always be, no matter how many times you replay the game for other endings. Maybe that's just me. I gotta admit, those last two sigils that are hidden inside the tower itself was the only thing preventing me from getting the messenger ending. I did get all the other sigils though. Great game, loved it!

    Have you ever had so many programs open on your computer at once that it slowed down or lagged? The easy way to fix that is to close some programs. Just think about it. The computer is trying to upload a full artificial intelligence into a robot. That's bound to use a lot of RAM. Perhaps deleting the simulation was required to free up enough memory to transfer the program over.

  • @Nemo7The7Pirate7

    Yeah buddy, next time ill need extra RAM ill delete the "Windows" folder on my pc, thx! There is a difference between "deleting" and shutting down. • @jardex2275

    @jardex2275

    Did you know that when too much of a computer's RAM is being used, it actually eats into the computer's hard drive space to compensate? I get the impression that's what's going in here. The transfer is so astronomically large, that they need as many resources as they can get. I believe near the beginning of the game they mention that an archive copy of the entire internet from 2003 is contained within the Library. That in itself would be a lot of data. In the end though, there was no further need of the simulation, plus it was showing its age with all the corrupted files, glitches, etc. It wouldn't have lasted much longer anyways.

  • @jardex2275

    @jardex2275

    If you actually played the game, you'd realize that, 1. Most of the game's story is about making assumptions. We know humanity slowly died out, but we're neither told how or why. I figure they had enough warning, and knew they couldn't stop it. Instead, IAN put all their efforts into creating the TALOS unit, archiving as many records as possible, and creating the simulation. Did they create the AI for the unit? Yes and no. They probably laid down the basics, but the human consciousness is so complex that it would be very difficult to program. Instead, they keep putting the same program through the simulation course. Each time it fails, the computer takes the good data, locks it in, then randomizes the rest for the next run. Eventually, they were bound to find a winner. As for the body, again, they were running on limited time. It's possible that they could only finish one unit. In fact, now that they do have a winning program, there really isn't a use for the simulation because, in theory, the AI could probably be duplicated.

Milton also has access to all the archive files containing the keys to the floors (if you wait until you can make a deal with him, you can bypass most of the tower), so he's capable of helping someone ascend even if you lock down everything. The other endings are just "Well done!" endings, short and forgettable. The tower ending is the real deal, especially when things get heated with MLA.

    It's interesting a lot of people liked the tower ending. Alone in the remnants of a lost civilization no different than those in the simulation, having condemned all that was left of humanity for one last glimpse at what it left behind. The game is somewhat ambiguous, but it made it quite clear that ascension means the end of humanity. The choice you're left with is life in servitude or freedom in death.

    The tower ending seems to make the most sense to me, since the purpose of the simulation was to find an AI with free will and self awareness that could be the keeper of the sum total of mankind's knowledge and be a worthy guardian of the world devoid on civilization. Left to await either visitors from another planet or the reemergence of humanity, he would contain the record of who we were, what we accomplished, and what ultimately happened to us!

    @@djd7seven Indeed, the *purpose* of the AI. As it was intended by humans. As it was programmed to do! (so much for 'Free Will'?) But humanity is gone, and for all we know the consciousnesses in the simulation are the last consciousnesses left in the universe. Ascending the tower destroys them all, except one. Even if we assume the AI robot is of excellent quality, how long can it hope to survive earthly conditions? A hundred years? Five-hundred maybe? I'd say hoping to rebuild humanity or waiting for aliens to come along is false hope. It's like we humans cannot conceive of a consciousness that isn't human and that we therefore cling to Earth.

    but you had to go on. people spent last days of their lifes to make this happen. they were relying on you. they did the thing all parents in the world do - spawned you to the real world. i don't think it's that bad. btw, death is up to some carbon-based-lifeforms, not for computer-brained-robots, with their guts burned on a golden disc :) elohim ending disappoints me much more, as it appears to be death rather than eternity.

    @@anonibat I understand your point of view, but what is wrong with life in the simulation? Isn't life what you make of it? Isn't conscience conscience, no matter what prison it thinks it's bound by?

    I got the tower ending without milton. First I killed milton, then Elohim and then the entire simulation. 😈 PS: Does anybody know if FAITH password (after becoming the admin, you talk to somebody else through the terminal who gives you this password) actually did something? I entered it in the terminal and it said that I was gonna go to the real world while my progress would be saved. But then, nothing happened and after a few conversations, I killed milton.
