The Talos Principle [No Spoiler edition]

WELL, this was a really difficult video to make! To some how explain the Talos Principle without giving anything important about it. The video goes in stages:
0:00 - No spoilers, you won't know what the heck it's about
3:19 - Describing what the game is, spoiling nothing that 5 minutes of gameplay wouldn't reveal
5:03 - A few reveals, but no spoilers. Just in case you're still wondering whether this is the game for you.
See the follow-up spoiler video here: • The Talos Principle - ...

It's a really nice game, I bought it two years ago because it was on sale and never played it, but one day I was so bored I booted up the game and I'm so glad I did it, because it was the only thing I played that week, and I enjoyed every minute of it, I still have to play through the dlc, but I encourage everyone to buy it, it's on sale right now and the price is basically a steal for what you are getting out of this game!

The DLC isn't as good as the main game, but it's still good. I mainly just missed the level of existential quandaries present in the main game, as the DLC leans a bit heavier on humor and just existing in the world instead of thinking about it. Honestly I'm worried about how I've heard talk that they're going to make a sequel, as I can't really see them capturing that same level of thought provocation again. I would love to be proven wrong, though. Edit: Oh, and the stars are *required* for the good ending which is BS. Not all of them, but I think you need all but two IIRC. Had to cheat for a number of them, which is something I hated doing in The Talos Principle.

It's the best game I've ever played, it touched me, made me think, and I had found it one night while aimlessly searching steam. Never thought to consider the aspect of loneliness as a part of the game. It really is just something that keeps on giving, and I wish everyone would just play this fucking game.

The Talos Principle was my nightmare for years. It was one of the games that got me into philosophy, to understand humanity better. It was where my life changed and i saw everything with a different light, how beautiful is the world and the things we have are wonderful. Truly, listening to Alexandra's tapes, reading the memories of the humans that appear to be gone for years and years is just heartbreaking but at the same time so fucking beautiful. It really gives you hope in what the darkness took away in the first place. Never stopped playing and finished the game in 2 days in the summer of 2016, truly changed my life, i still highly suggest it to everyone to experience it, because honestly there's, atleast not for me, anything like it.

The extremely vague descriptions are exactly how I feel about the game, and I really wanted to tell others about it. The Talos Principal has one of those stories that I consider by far one of my favourites, and it looks like you too experienced that. Looking at the comments, I'm also super glad others are buying the game and get to experience it for themselves for the first time. Just stick with it, it pays off at the end. Oh, do you have a more accurate ETA for the spoiler video? I'd love to see it, but if it goes unlisted (at least without another announcement video or some such), I feel like I'll miss it completely. Talos Principle is one of those games that I was so invested in that I finished them on one morning in my pyjamas. I just wanted to do one more level before breakfast, but then I finished ALL of it, that's how much fun it was. Actually, was it really "fun"? I mean, the puzzles definitely were, but the story is just soulcrushing and genuinely made me feel bad at times. It was definitely a game that hooked me from day 1. The beautiful environments, the wonderful music, the atmosphere... it makes me nostalgic for a place I never visited. I'd love to live in that world. It's so gorgeous. What a fantastic game, absolutely brilliant.

10:32 "I'm not the only person who was left profoundly moved by it" I think the loneliness aspect of the game is exactly why it's so beautiful, you mindlessly listen to God while doing your puzzles and getting hints of communication around you (QR codes). You start seeking social interaction because of the scarcity of the interaction. You slowly begin searching for knowledge, meaning, history about all of it and in turn, you start asking questions. I played it years ago, it made me feel like I was inside the game, living the story. I never thought twice whenever I read hours of writing on a computer terminal, or having conversations with it. Every single interaction was perfect. Nothing felt like a game. To whomever reads this and hasn't tried it, I know it sounds absurd. But I really can't stop suggesting you try it, it really is something special.

I was stuck on the level for hours, and the solution I found seemed like it had to be so precisely set up that it can't have been the way you were supposed to do it. It's one of the best games I've played in the last few years though, certainly. Great to see it get a shout out from Philip and hopefully more people who weren't aware of it get to play!

The Talos Principle is the kind of masterpiece that you can't stop thinking about when you've just finished it, then you forget about it completely, and then when you're reminded of its existence you suddenly get the incredible urge to boot up again. I've completed the game and the DLC, I remember being obsessed by them, but now I barely remember any of it. Which is good, because that gives me an excuse to replay it. This is different from Portal 2 and Deus Ex, which although I played them longer ago, I still remember the vague bigger picture of. Because of this, I don't think I would enjoy replaying them as much, even though I played them for days on end, hours at a time. I love this game so much.

I'm so glad that, after Hexcells, you picked up this game as well. I got myself this game for Christmas 2015 and was utterly in love with it, but disheartened by the fact that literally no-one I'd talked to even knew The Talos Principle existed. The review I ended up writing for this game was basically a love letter to Croteam, and I still think the game holds up just the same today. Thank you for covering it! For anyone who's wondering whether they should buy the DLC or not, I wholeheartedly recommend it. The puzzles become more creative and challenging, and the narrative, I think, is even more ingenious than that of the base game.

It’s so nice to know someone else felt the same way about it, because you perfectly described the feeling I had while going through it. And have a nice Christmas Philip :)

Yes! Finally you played the Talos Principle philip! This game has been proudly sitting on my steam profile as my favourite game ever for a very long time. It's just something really special that you don't see every day in a game. I totally agree on the terminals by the way, I started out ignoring them, but then noticed they held some very interesting content and started reading all of them. I also suggest you play the DLC 'Road to Gehenna' as it's really, really good (and a lot of content, especially for the price!) I'm so glad you did a video on this, spreading the awareness about how awesome this game is, it's truly an underrated gem!

I agree. Don't get me wrong I absolutely love the Portals, but this game is just that little bit better. The way they encourage to "break the game" to get some of those stars is incredibly crafted and rewarding. Portal is missing this extra thing to satisfy your desire to take the game mechanics to the extreme to exploit the level design as much as possible.

  • @dan_

I love The Talos Principle, and while some of the puzzles do rival, if not exceed the quality of the best bits of either Portal, I remember getting a bit cheesed off from time to time with TTP, in a way I never did with Portal. The story of TTP is what makes it arguably better than Portal overall though. I haven't played Portal for so long now, but I seem to remember them being really short. TTP gives you much more content as well I feel.

I think the fact that the story, or even more so the delivery of that story, is so good that kind of killed the game for me funny enough. Thank you so much for recommending this game, Philip! I bought and played it after watching this video and it is, indeed, the best game I've ever seen in terms of plot and storytelling. I found myself spending hours digging through the various levels to discover all secrets, collected all logs I could find, and even translated the hex strings to ascii with the help of an OCR tool. I knew I could probably find all that information somewhere online but I was so engrossed in the game that I didn't want to pull away from it until the very end - managed to log nearly 40 hours in the span of 3 days. I'll leave the more detailed commentary for the follow-up video but I'll say that The Talos Principle, to me, truly reveals what distinguishes video games from other artistic mediums.

It was an amazing experience and I totally felt the same about the computers and what they had to tell as Philip. First, when I played in 2015, i didnt bother them, but when I continued I started seeking for them to get more and more of this amazing philosophical input and the background information of the world youre playing in. It was one of the most pleasing, satisfying games Ive ever played, including the brilliant Gehenna DLC.
