This song is about being insecure in a relationship. He's finding his biggest enemy is himself. He knows his own weaknesses, insecurities, and past, and is constantly worried that his girl will find these out to. What he wants to be to her: The tallest man, the king, the puppy (something innocent). This is what she sees him as right now. But, he is worried she will eventually know him as he knows himself and reject him. This is the runner, the spy, the leak- insecurity that would blow his cover and let on that he isn't as strong as he appears. But, by the end of the song, we see he's conquered these self doubts or weaknesses. They dance in a beautiful garden, and no longer does he have to lie (...ain't no fraud), he believes in himself. He is a gardener, a man. What a beautiful song about internal struggles that threaten a relationship, and conquering those insecurities.

i think it's more complicated than just conquering those fears and insecurities. the idea of these fears being personalised and subsequently "buried in the garden" sounds nefarious for a reason - instead of the insecurities being faced and dealt with, they've been killed and buried to fertilise his garden (the part of himself he shows to her, what he wants to be seen as, what he's built); the implication being that all those skeletons will be revealed as soon as she starts digging it's a beautiful song, just don't let its metaphorical meanings distract from how nefarious the literal actions described are! it needs to be accounted for in the analysis, i think

few artists could craft a song about jealousy and murder and make it sound so poetic
@knowntoall1

+Jarrod Young Definitely. But surely in a way that is usually considered scary/abnormal. That is why murders are the metaphors.
@selfishgills8193

+Jarrod Young the song is not about bettering himself but hiding his flaws. When his flaws are about to be exposed he "murders" the person about to reveal them to further conceal his imperfections. Obviously murder is used as a metaphor and not the actual act. In a way he is "burying" all his imperfections so he appears to be perfect in his lover's eyes. Don't we all do this? Hahaha :) It's a song about feeling insecure and vulnerable.
@acavalieri07

I think it's part of that and part of what Jarrod Young was saying. Hiding his flaws, and killing off parts of his old self in order to be the person his lover sees/deserves.

you guys imagine this guy in sweden, located in a small folkshouse getting ready for a smaller gig. we're about 30 people in there, there for the sake of listening to the softening music he creates with his person. he's not just singing and playing the guitarr, he's using his whole body to produce something unique, something very hard find today amongst the music industry. we got to speak to him in person afterwards.. and i even got to hold his guitarr for a few secs :) t'was a blast, i tellyou

I take that it's a metaphor for how in a relationship, you feel you have to make yourself look better than you are and that you have to hide all of your flaws, going to any lengths to do so - 'there ain't no cowboy in my hat' and 'there ain't no puppy in your leash' etc. The garden is the embellished image of himself that he presents, hence 'what a garden I have made'. At the end he acknowledges that the only honesty he can give is that he is a 'gardener' and a man,not the king mentioned earlier
@TheSwedishAssassin

I would add to that and say it's the realization that love is a constant effort, and not something you just take some work into once and it just sustains itself. Love requires tending and deserving of your effort.

Obviously murder is used as a metaphor and not the actual act. In a way he is "burying" all his imperfections so he appears to be perfect in his lover's eyes. Don't we all do this? Hahaha :) It's a song about feeling insecure and vulnerable.
@acavalieri07

I think it's part of that and part of what Jarrod Young was saying. Hiding his flaws, and killing off parts of his old self in order to be the person his lover sees/deserves.

This song is an underrated masterpiece.
you guys imagine this guy in sweden, located in a small folkshouse getting ready for a smaller gig. we're about 30 people in there, there for the sake of listening to the softening music he creates with his person. he's not just singing and playing the guitarr, he's using his whole body to produce something unique, something very hard find today amongst the music industry. we got to speak to him in person afterwards.. and i even got to hold his guitarr for a few secs :) t'was a blast, i tellyou

I have been listening to a lot of TTMOE and my family has decided to call him anything that resembles a tall person. "The man who is elongated". "Him, who is such of enormous stature". "Holy fuck he is tall". The list goes on.

@TheSwedishAssassin

I would add to that and say it's the realization that love is a constant effort, and not something you just take some work into once and it just sustains itself. Love requires tending and deserving of your effort.

15 years later i'm still gratefull for this beautifull piece of art.
One of my favorite all time songs. I love how it's both incredibly unique and such a throwback to young Bob Dylan. .
These lyrics are phenomenal.
This song is class and so is the king of spain... Original, catchy and timeless! Very inspiring to any singer songwriter. Top marks.
Easily one of my favorite guitarists. His guitar work is so expressive and melodic.
Kristian will forever be my hero. Since first hearing him, he's always inspired me to pursue music and happiness. And although life hasn't always been the kindest to either of us. From heartbreak to rainy days. We've had the blessing of living on this beautiful planet, sharing all the things that make us laugh and cry. I can't thank you enough, Kristian. Your music saved my life, as well as many others. God bless you.
the lyrics are so powerul. I think that is what makes this song a true gem. The great music helps also.
It's funny how people tend to compare him with other artists, because to me, he will be unique. I have never heard a voice like that before. So beautiful.

@@iliasant.4632you sure it's people he's burying in the garden and not what he perceives as flaws in his life as a man, such as his insecurities? He says "as ashes I return" not "they"
Even though I've never met him, it feels like he's a friend I've known for ever when I watch him play.
I could sit and listen to this performance for the rest of my life, I'm so in love with Kristian's music. and it makes me sad that people feel the need to fight over it, so please, agree to disagree and just appreciate this wonderful thing.
For any confused the song is about him killing (changing) parts of himself to be with the person he loves. Basically hes killing parts of himself so he can change to be the person that belongs with the one he loves.

If you wanna takr it farther my interpretation is the garden is his life with his love and that hes content with what hes become to be with that person. The deaths of himself that lead to change fertilized that garden which cultivated his relationship. This song is pretty deep and wonderful imo.
This becomes my favorite song EVERY single time i listen to it. So much harmony, and quirkiness in his voice. Absolutely amazing and wonderful to listen to.
This song just emanates peace and love.
His voice is soooo much better live
i could listen to this all day
Fell in love 12 years ago, still play this weekly. So thankful for kexp to introduce me to this lovely man
Since I was just a teenager, I keep coming here to listen to this treasure. I can't really tell how many memories I've construced with his songs. Listening to this guy for more than 10 years gave me a really good background soundtrack to my happy and sad moments. He is the best!
I listen to this, "Where do my Bluebird fly" from these same recording sessions and his cover of "Both sides now" by Joni Mitchell a ton. Music is one of my only respites and salves in this life. Thanks for the awesome music Kristian and KEXP.
Such a beautiful song. Just read through the lyrics and gained an entire new appreciation for this piece

I love that voice and how he plays guitar, the variations transport me!
This song is everything. It's amazing. What a wonderful artist. I met him, around 2007? Genuinely, his studio versions are obviously the best listening, but to be able to see him live here play guitar. He is quite amazing!! Check out "where do my bluebird fly"!
this song, that moment, that studio, that recording - greatest ever.
The best. I will forever be grateful for randomly coming across his music. It's helped me through the worst of times.
The kinda music they should keep playing on the radio.
Kristian is such an amazing man, I just saw him live and got to meet him. He's truly inspirational through his music and his personality. He was telling my friends and I how he's scared as hell at every show he performs at. Yet he still does such a fantastic job and woo's the audience. He's just a regular man with an impeccable talent. There is no denying it.
My social studies teacher listens to him all the time, and I was so sad cause I couldn't find out who sang this or who he was and I'm so happy now cause I found it!
i simply do not understand how you can dislike this song
He is magic.
He knows, all about the soil.
