    Master Splinter’s original origin is being the pet rat of Hamato Yoshi. He learned martial arts by copying Yoshi’s techniques. Splinter would then mutate alongside four baby turtles after being exposed to mutagen. Other incarnations of Splinter have had it where Yoshi became a rat.

    @@jman8725 No, in the original comic's continuity he was the pet rat of Hamato Yoshi. The same thing happened in several of the live action movies and in the 2003 Kids WB/Fox Box/CW 4Kids/4Kids TV animated series as well. The 1987 cartoon was one of the first places that Yoshi and Splinter were the same person. The comic that spin-off from the 1987 show kept that origin too. Which was then followed by the 2012 Nickelodeon series. The 2011 IDW series took it a step futher. Not only was Yoshi and Splinter the same person, but he had 4 sons with Tang Shen. Both Yoshi and his young sons were murdered by the Shredder. After death, Yoshi reincarnated as a rat, and his sins reincarnated as turtles. The mutagen stuff happens and then we get Splinter and the 4 turtles. The 2014 live-action reboot with Megan Fox got rid of the idea of Yoshi altogether, making it so that Splinter was just a random rat who learned Ninjutsu from a book and then later got mutated into a giant talking rat. Lastly, we have the 2018 Nickelodeon animated series that once gain made Splinter and Yoshi the same person, but again he had a slightly different background as he left home at a much younger age.

    They didn't leave out the strength feat where Shredder throws a gas tanker. They showed it on screen at around 6:29, but you were too distracted wondering which Super Shredder iteration they would use to notice what was being shown. But that wasn't really even the deciding factor, it was the speed, so that strength feat was somewhat redundant anyways.

    Fun Fact: The TMNT was originally not a kid’s series. Leonardo loses an arm, Raphael burns his face beyond recognition, disemboweling a guy etc. Surprisingly it shares the same universe as DC Superheroes and Power Rangers, specifically the American Power Rangers as I don’t think Toei has the rights to use the TMNT in their Super Sentai universe. Update: I just remembered the turtles are canon in *two* Power Rangers timelines. The show and the comics. They actually become rangers at one story arc in the comics with April as the pink one.

You'll probably remember the Tekko-Kagi claws being mentioned before, back in Ryu Hayabusa vs. Strider Hiryu and by me stating them to be one of my many personal favorite weapons, due to their resemblance to Wolverine's Adamantium Beta claws. Heck, I even managed to get a pair of my own, several months back. I call 'em "Sen-Ken (戦犬)," meaning "War Dog," due to them having wolf heads on 'em. Also, Wolverine even fought that same Devil, wielding that same bus-sized, soul-cutting sword,.....and won. By himself. And that was just Wolverine's soul trapped in Hell, while his physical body got possessed by a demon, who got summoned by a bunch of people who had it out for Wolverine. And wanted him to suffer by having said demon take over his body and start trying to kill *everyone* close to him.

In the original comics Splinter was Yoshi’s pet rat who learned ninjutsu from watching his master practice and after the Shredder killed Yoshi he swore vengeance. The first cartoon introduced the idea that Splinter was a mutate Yoshi, which most future adaptations used as their origin.

    Ya see Kyle according to most canon forms of the Ninja Turtles, mutagen is often seen reacting to nearby life which can change its effects. For example, in one of the TV shows Splinter is exposed to mutagen is an alleyway nearby a bunch of rats. However with most animals it mostly increases the physique of whatever animal they happen to be, like Leatherhead being an Alligator the Ninja Turtles found or the Ninja turtles themselves being normal turtles before they were first exposed

    Alright, some days late but I was super busy and now I can watch this a second time with the time to leave the comment it deserves. I’m a SUPER fan of the ninja turtles which means be prepared for a Kempfdog level comment here! 1:57 fun fact, yes the kitchen utensil! The creators of TMNT, Kevin Eastman and Peter Laird, we’re roommates when they made the original comic book. While they were coming up with ideas for their big villain one of them held up a shredder and said something to the effect of, “can you imagine a guy covered in this?” And thus the Shredder was born! 2:05 these are all different incarnations from various shows and comics. The ninja turtles have a LOT of different universes. My personal favorite is the alien Utrom Shredder from the 2003 cartoon. 2:39 in the original comic story it wasn’t Oroku Saki who competed with Hamatp Yoshi for Tang Shen’s love, but his older brother Oroku Nagi. Yoshi killed Nagi in a duel, leading to Saki swearing his revenge and killing Tang Shen as retribution. Every single version of the story that’s come out since then has simplified the story to having Nagi and Saki as the same man, which I personally dislike because the main theme of the original comic was the cycle of revenge and how retribution keeps getting passed down to the next generation, but to each their own. 3:09 yes! His design and aesthetic was directly inspired by Darth Vader! 3:30 the Foot Clan was made as a direct reference to the ninja clan in Marvel comics constantly hounding Daredevil, the Hand. In fact most of the original comic book is a direct reference or parody to Daredevil, right down to the truck carrying the chemical that mutated the turtles. Eastman and Laird included a young boy saving a blind man from that truck and getting splashed in the face, explicitly implying that it was Daredevil. Of course they didn’t work for Marvel so it’s not canon and only a reference, but it’s a fun fact! 4:32 the original story wasn’t that Yoshi turned into the rat mutant Splinter, he was straight up killed by Shredder. Splinter was his pet rat who mutated at the same time as the turtles, and learned ninjutsu and martial arts by mimicking Yoshi inside his cage… which is INCREDIBLY ridiculous, campy, and silly. But the 1987 cartoon was the first to change it so that Splinter and Yoshi were the same person, which is really ironic since that cartoon runs on nonsense cartoony camp. Ever since it’s usually the more serious toned stories that use the original origin story (Splinter was Yoshi’s pet) and the more cartoony stories that use the more grounded origin (Yoshi and Splinter being the same). Strange and fun. 7:17 aaaaah, the Coming Out of Their Shells tour. It was a rock opera that capitalized on the height of the ninja turtle craze and… it’s infamously bad. Really terrible. And I love it so much! XD 7:39 yes, they are memes. The Shredder is unquestionably a super awesome badass, but he also keeps losing to these really weird or plain dumb and anticlimactic ways, so it leads to a lot of memes. 7:48 you honestly think an alligator bite is more pressure than a trash compactor? A trash compactor is designed to crush all the crap we throw out into tiny spaces. Their working pressure is 3000 psi, which actually is a little bit more than an alligator’s bite force… except the alligator can only bite one spot and a garbage truck compactor is going to crush every square inch of your body with that pressure all at once. 10:05 tachyons are absolutely fascinating! Good material to look up if you want to study random science bs to learn for fun. Not only do they move faster than light but also backward in time. There’s a lot of trippy and wonky physics involved. 10:55 there’s actually a lot of Marvel comics crossed over with Saturday Night Live. They’re exactly as weird as you’d expect. 11:55 come on man, I thought you were a big gun guy! What’re you doing massively misjudging bullet speed out here? XD 12:20 oh yeah, there’s been multiple Spiderwomen. To say nothing of Spider-Man 2099, Miles Morales Spider-Man, Spider-Man Noir, Ghost Spider, the pig cartoon Spider-Ham, the list of spider people goes on and on. Comics are crazy, just assume that every concept has been done before. 17:10 well… yeah? What else would they do? Calculate every possible thing he COULD do with his ring if he were a completely different character? It’s still the Silver Samurai fighting, with all the strategies and combat experience he would employ, not a new creation with the same abilities. If he never thinks to do a certain thing, why would it be any different here? 18:13 I mean, you’re technically right but did they need to? They showed clips of Super Shredder doing all sorts of insane strength feats and listed super strength as one of his abilities. Did they need to show off that specific clip to understand that super strong mutant > Olympic level human?

    Spider-Woman, that's a thing? Yep, there were actually a lot of "Spider people" in Marvel comics. The funny thing is, Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew) is not related to Spider-Man in anyway (e.g., she's not a friend, relative, she's not a sidekick or partner, her powers don't even directly come from a spider). She just had powers that, on the surface, seemed similar to Peter's so she copied his name. One person told Peter that he should sue for copyright😂.

    To be fair, even as a Turtles fan, I'd say they got this wrong. To start with, there isn't just one Shredder. He is wildly different depending upon the incarnation of the TMNT you draw upon. And they just mashed all versions together. And they never address the fact that Shredder isn't that difficult to defeat. In the original comics, the 2003 cartoon series and 1990 movies he was defeated quite early on by just the martial arts skills of four teenage mutants with no real powers of their own.

    I think your right that Silver is faster but the one power super shredder has every time he transforms is really strong skin to the point that the Silver blade would do nothing & there for speed means nothing if u can't do any damage. Shredder only sometimes gets more speed as super shredder & that bigger body should slow him down. Yet it means he will do more damage & has skin that can break a sword. So your right to say who is faster but they still seem right to say who would win.

    If it's 'notoriously bad', then how come it's one of the most popular cartoons in the history of cartoons? Also, fun is a pretty relative thing, other people have different opinions and enjoy different things. There are more than enough people who prefer Splinter's origin story as a human and there are probably even more who enjoy both versions equally. The main reason why they focus so much on that cartoon is because it is THE most famous and successful version of the TMNT, ever.

    i do find it odd they used different feats from different universe Shredders. like they use a lot of the feats from the 2012 Nickelodeon version and the original 80's version, as well as the movies, when all those have different weaknesses, strengths and crazy feats. i mean, the 2012 version (the CGI looking one) was actually raised from the dead after the main series ended and we got the "Tales of" series of short stories and What Ifs. the what if was when Shredders followers who weren't under the new rule of Splinter's daughter (long story) tried and succeeded in not only bringing a demon to do their bedding, but also a pretty much zombified, mutated Shredder! and yes, mind you, they actually killed him off in the series! so, yeah, not sure about all the feats mashed into one Shredder but whatever. I won't be annoyed till later fights mash characters together.

  • @LittleZbot

    @LittleZbot

    They addressed several times that TMNT has no decisive canon, and multiple Shredders contradict in story even though they match up evenly in stats and feats. So they throw out the outliers (like the time Shredder sifts through lava with his bare hands) and take the rest. They do this again for other characters later on with no defined canon. Otherwise, they follow the original canon character and use every other version of that character as supporting material. It's a simple, crowd-pleasing system, and I agree with it.

    @@crcoghill The episode where they don't count specific tidbits of knowledge that are delivered in-canon to an alternate universe version of Ben who was basically just another separate character? That's not just reasonable; I'd be questioning it if they DID do that. Comparing feats is one thing. Comparing general knowledge is one thing. Saying a character should have super-specifically helpful knowledge because another version of him was told it? Quite another. That'd be like if they had Roxas from Kingdom Hearts on Death Battle and gave him the Power of Waking from Sora just because they're technically the same person and Sora. They're the same person, but not the same character. (I assume this is what you're referencing because it's all anybody seems to reference, but if you aren't, I apologize.) Then everybody complains that they gave Hal feats from Pre-Crisis, completely forgetting that the was no pre and post-crisis Hal. He was outside of the timeline at the time and was totally unaffected by it; it's the same Hal Jordan drawing from and surpassing the same Ion throughout both eras. And this version of Hal was specifically recombined with Modern Hal (who has feats making him way more powerful than any previous or alternate version anyway) through Rebirth and Doomsday Clock, AND THEN DEATH METAL COMBINES HIM WITH ALL HIS ALTERNATE VERSIONS. This is the only matchup people bring up when pretending Death Battle doesn't stick to this rule, and it's one of the most ironclad cases of them using it properly. People just don't realize because they're into Cartoons, not Comics, and so don't realize exactly what was and is happening in the comics world of DC. No judgements; that's just different sets of interests. I happen to have both. I only bring it up to contextually why they can literally use any feat from any version of Hal (and despite this they still only stuck to the primary canon), would be fully correct in doing so, and yet people don't understand and complain about them picking favorites. Hal is actually one of the only characters in fiction they can do this with; it's just the nature of his story and the multiverse-breaking arcs he's been through. (BTW I don't care about Hal and like Ben plenty. I just don't tie whether or not they win a fan-made battle into my appreciation of the character. It's a puzzle; little else.)
