Retelling Japanese historical stories in a narrative way. Reinterpreting the legends experienced in the Sengoku, Bakumatsu, Meiji, Taisho, and Showa eras through a modern perspective.
This video delves into the complex story of the character Yugao in "The Tale of Genji," revealing the plight of women in the Heian period and the societal male-dominated perspective.
In the video, Genji meets Yugao by chance, initiating a relationship that begins romantically but ends tragically. Yugao initially captivates Genji with her mystery and gentle personality, traits that stand in stark contrast to other noblewomen and reflect societal stereotypes of women at the time.
The video explores Yugao's background story, her agency, and the hardships she faces living in the Heian period. Born into a noble family but facing a decline in fortunes after her father's early death, she is compelled to seek survival through marriage. Having had a relationship with the Head Chamberlain and even bearing him a daughter, Yugao ultimately chooses to leave due to the strictness of his lawful wife. Upon encountering Genji, Yugao continues to endure the pressures of being a woman in the Heian period.
The video discusses Genji's emotions and Yugao's death, revealing his emotional dependency and loneliness. Throughout, Yugao's intelligence and resilience shine as she deftly navigates Genji's inquiries, showcasing wisdom in surviving in a patriarchal society. Genji's confusion at Yugao's death highlights the aristocratic society's disregard and indifference towards women.
Finally, the video discusses the foolish perceptions of women by men in "The Tale of Genji," with Murasaki Shikibu using Yugao's character to satirize this male-dominated mindset. This also reflects the challenges and struggles faced by women in a male-dominated society during the Heian period.
