Retelling Japanese historical stories in a narrative style, reshaping the legends experienced during the Warring States, Meiji, Taisho, and Showa periods through a modern lens.
In this episode, we delve deep into Japan's film censorship system from the Meiji era to the Taisho era and explore banned films. From the introduction of film cameras to Japan in 1896 to the formal establishment of film censorship in the Taisho era, we review this tumultuous history of cinema together.
Firstly, we introduce the first banned film in Japanese history, "The End of Louis XVI's Life during the French Revolution," and the reasons for its prohibition in Japan. Then, we discuss how Yasujiro Ozu's "The Flavor of Green Tea Over Rice" survived wartime censorship and eventually became a classic. Additionally, we reveal the story of "Zigomar" and its impact on Japanese societal order.
Lastly, we can't ignore "The Mikado," a British production set in Japan, a comedic opera suspected of disrespecting the Emperor, leading to its ban in Japan.
This video aims to provide you with a comprehensive historical perspective, understanding how culture and politics influence artistic expression. Moreover, we will see how sparks of creativity and expression still shine even under strict censorship.
Remember to like and subscribe to support us in exploring more untold historical stories. Let's delve deeper into the taboos and challenges of Japanese cinema, exploring the cultural conflicts and societal changes behind them.
