This is so Russian. I love it. A princess is brought back to life by a kiss and the world is brought back to life by a princess. The men are responsible, familial, and manly and the women are virtuous, kind, and beautiful. We could certainly use more of that these days.

for English speakers: this cartoon is based on the fairy tale by A.S. Pushkin. He wrote his fairy tales based on fairy tales that his nanny read to him as a child. This is probably how The Tale of the Dead Princess was born, with echoes of Snow White. Today he is often accused of plagiarism.

To be fair, Snow White didn't come out of nowhere. These are echoes of North Germanic myths, which in turn are descendants of Indo-European ones. Remember the same Völsung Saga - Brünnehild, lying in a ring of divine fire, the valiant Siegfried passes through the fire and frees her from a sleep similar to death, cutting the chain mail with his sword Gram, after which they indulge in love pleasures for several days. And then Krimhilda’s passion, Brünnehild’s jealousy... In this case, Snow White is pure plagiarism. Moreover, plagiarism is castrated and much more unprincipled than the German primary sources. However, in my humble opinion, Snow White is still a good fairy tale. Also, Siegfried himself did not come out of nowhere; he is a European interpretation of the myth of Indra, who killed Vritra. It turns out that the Völsung Saga is also plagiarism? Funny. Well, by similar logic, you can get to the bottom of Professor Tolkien, at least for the fact that he took the names of the dwarves from the Elder Edda, lol. Plagiarism is, in principle, a dubious topic. Especially when it concerns ancient subjects that are the same for the whole continent.

Only idiots accuse him in plagiatrism. Both the Tale of the Dead Princess and Snow White are archetypic tales, which existed in different versions among all Europe - and both tales are simply based on the versions of their regions. Accusing Pushkin in plagiatrism is like accusing scandinavians, celts, slavs and greeks each other in plagiatrism for Thor, Tanaris, Perun and Zeus being similar to each other.

Metaphysical interpretation: the Princess represents the part of human mind that strives for self actualization. The evil queen represents the cruel egoic pattern that despises the idea of awakening. The seven hot dudes represent fulfilled earthy desires, even tho wonderful, not satisfactory to the mind that strives to know itself. The dog represents intuition and great example of what happens when you don't listen to it. The apple represents a tragedy, and death represents acceptance and surrender. The Prince represents another dimension of the same consciousness - the subconscious mind. His search for her is the dark night of the soul. The unification of both kills the ego, the two parts of the mind finally unite in wholeness, love and power.

This soviet cartoon is an absolute master and a stand out amongst other soviet animations I've seen, I know that the technique used in this film was rotoscoping because the animation on the characters seemed to move a bit slower and because they are literally traced over real movements, besides that, the story itself reminds me of Snow White, specifically, the Disney version!

    I. Ivanov-Vano makes a 2D format appear 3D with richly painted backgrounds in this tale in verse based on an Alexander Pushkin poem. “With his suite the Tsar departed. The Tsaritsa tender-hearted” -Pushkin Inanimate objects become anthropomorphic, like the Sun and the Moon. Fluttering birds contribute their doting presence and add to the animated choreographed milieu. Music contributes its dramatic counterpoint to a mythical narrative.
