Today on HTME were going to harvest some deuterium from my homemade breeder reactor and then run that through our fusion reactor to produce the energy. Then go to my closet cyclotron and collect some of my left over dark matter from last years crop and combine everything to make a primitive wormhole. Hopefully we can use that to go back in time and find out how to build a pyramid.

The clay tablet from one king to another wasn't unsent and it wasnt found in a kiln. Clay tablets were dried, not fired so they could be recycled. The tablet was sent but it supposedly went unread and was put into storage until the king could read it. Before that happened the sea people attacked and burned the palace to the ground, the heat causing the tablet to be fired, preserving it.

Episode 100000: How to augment yourself with cybernetic limbs
The thing that I find most amazing about human development is the amount of truly crazy unprompted expermenting that would have lead to basic things like metal work. How often do you feel the need to put a rock in a fire and then when nothing happens decide the only possible course of action is to put it in another fire while figuring out how to make it hotter to the point the fire is useless for cooking and painful to be anywhere near.
@tylerdurden3722
2 жыл бұрын
Most things were probably accidental discoveries. Fire is needed to turn clay into pottery. If you don't heat it, it will just turn back into clay when it becomes wet. Really hot fires were created to make better pottery. So there were always incentives to create hotter fires. Copper was the first metal to be used. Copper can be found in its pure state naturally, called nuggets, lying around like a rock. Gold nuggets too. Of course most of these had been found and picked up long ago. Copper is soft and can be shaped easily. So, someone encountered a nugget of copper and discovered that it's malleable. But, that same person would immediately discover that shaping copper makes it hard and brittle. Someone then discovered that heating it just a little bit and letting it cool made it soft and workable again. This probably led to someone discovering its even more workable while hot (not waiting for it to cool before shaping it further). That probably led to them discovering it will eventually melt if heated too much. Anyway, nuggets of pure copper are rare. These are usually found among green rocks. And most of the pure copper is visibly stuck in green rocks. One can sometimes visibly see lines of pure copper in the green rock. Knowing that copper can melt if heated enough, someone probably tried to melt the pure copper out of those green rocks. And eventually, someone with a really hot fire, discovered that the green part of the rock can also become pure copper. Eventually, people stopped looking for pure copper and just heated the much more common green rocks to make copper. Sometimes, other things are in those rocks as well. Resulting in alloys forming accidentally.
it's impressive how effective the thin bronze plates were at deflecting the spear and sword. They even bent the sword tip. Also, the sponsor segment was pretty funny.

They know this for two reasons. one... these tablets were rarely, if ever fired, and in this case with the urgency needed, it was not likely they would spend the time to fire it. and second, it was found out of context with other tablets and together they made no sense unless it was a copy that was being stored of a letter already sent.

Classical historian here. I hope this doesn't come across as 'well, actually..' I agree with most of what you said about Homer, and I know the point of the video is the cool sword (which is awesome!) And this was just the contextual pre-amble. But I think it would be more accurate to say that Homer was depicting his contemporary world, roughly c.9-8 BC and layering it onto pseudo-mythological events that took place nearly 400 years prior to his life, if he ever existed. I only say this because a lot of the material culture described in both of Homer's works is pretty accurate to the 8th century BC, with some elements from the 12th-11th c. BC.
