Want to hear something horrifying Bob Dylan did release a Christmas album.

You know if I was Odette, I would be pretty offended if my mother in law themed what was probably the first Christmas married to her son after the animal I was turned into by an evil sorcerer who was trying to blackmail me into marrying him. Also there is the fact that Odette almost died in the first movie because she was stuck in her swan form while that sorcerer disguised that old hag as Odette so Derek would mistakingly say he loved her because of some loophole in the curse. So honestly, I don’t understand why Odette didn’t come out of this hating swans.

But Swan Princess is not meant to be set in Russia. They don't have Russian names, I've never heard of any Derek or Odette here. Original had Prince be named Siegfried, which strongly suggests, that Tchaikovsky meant his story to be set in Germany. And well, the story itself seems to be referencing one of German folk tales with a similar plot. So they are meant to be Germans, and considering, how Derek is hunting with a bow, it's Medieval or Renaissance Germany. Still, pop-music, lightbulds and lightsaver won't be any more appropriate in Medieval or Renaissance Germany as well.

Also, despite Bob's insistence, I don't think these movies take place on Earth. None of the countries or kingdoms named are from actual Medieval Europe. Its just in a generic fantasy world with some Earth parallels.

I guess the swan curse turned her into a reverse ugly duckling so instead of starting out ugly and becoming beautiful, she started out beautiful and became ugly. Though honestly, I would lay the blame on the disgusting 3D animation because when it was a 2D movie you could tell that she was beautiful, at least in the first movie, I have never seen any of the sequels.

Seriously, Odette should have saved that cat at the beginning and taken it home, Number 9 should have snuggled up in her lap, enjoying the warmth and then spent the whole movie from there torn between his appreciation for Odette and his loyalty to Rothbart, and then maybe at the end, he still helps Rothbart out of sheer desperation to extend his life, but he hates himself for his choice and only and very reluctantly changes his mind at the last second and joins the heroes, and the movie ends with him knowing this is his last life, but that at least it'll be one full of love and warmth. And that was all off the top of my head.

Easy solution to the problem of Rothbart wanting to destroy Christmas: Rothbart: "I need to regain my body, and we need to cast the spell on (or at least near) the winter solstice. Let's see the ingredients: 50 pounds of earth, a liter of frog saliva and... ah the important component! Gloom across the entire kingdom! A kingdom in depression! That should be eas... oh wait, it's christmas..."

I'm starting to think Bobsheaux theory was right. Odette really is demon brought back to life by dark magic.

They look so weird in CG. Even weirder than usual. And I agree, what the hell, Odette? Who cares if he's the "bad guy", he's a poor cat freezing in the snow! Most people would pick the poor thing up and try to get him warm, then adopt him. I guess a nice princess can't do everything. I wish the chest opening had enabled Derek or someone to get possessed by Rothbart. That would have been kinda cool.

I always put out the idea that when it came to transitioning the designs from 2D to 3D they really didn't put a lot of effort or focus into it which makes them come off looking less designed and good looking and so uncanny. Of them all, Rogers is the only one who looks decent but everyone else just looks TERRIBLE and it gets even worse in the later movies, specifically because whoever they hired to do the character designs for the newer movies didn't take into account to make any new character look like they fit in with the look of the older ones, so we have cases of design clashes everywhere with the old characters looking like they are from DTDVD movies from the early 2000s and the new characters looking like someone is ATTEMPTING to use 'realism' and it just comes off as looking horrible all around.

This is living proof that Hand Drawn Animation has much more life to it than what a emotionless computer can do. "Note i don't hate CG some of my favorite films are CG, but it seems like alot of these films just are half-assed."

Well at least a disabled guy didn't get walking machine that "broke the next day".

At first I thought the cat was supposed to infiltrate the group by them feeling sorry for the frozen thing, but apparently cats covered in ice sickles are a common occurrence in this town.

"You didn't know that saber-toothed cats were still around?" Well, NOW they aren't. That was the last one!

There's something surreal and disturbing about badly animated puppet looking people singing autotuned Christmas songs in a style that definately wouldn't exist during that time period. The random light saber fight made it even more surreal. If the makers of this movie were trying to go for the style of weird art films, they succeeded.

If you think this is bad, try watching the newer sequels where they keep introducing NEW characters that are designed off-model from the design tone of this. It's like watching two badly design animated series in ONE movie.

But...I was only hoping for just one sequel where they'd show Odette's and Derek's married life, and maybe even show them having a kid or two. But they gave us...7....why...? And in the beginning of this movie, they turned Odette into a cold, insensitive b*tch to a freaking frozen cat! Sorry Bobsheaux, I love your reviews, but I can't finish this one gawd.....and those pop songs.........

Right there with you. Got a huge soft spot and a love of the original. The sequels however, well they can go burn

It’s not so much a question of “Who was asking for more Swan Princess?” but rather “What audience did the crew think this would appeal to?” Those who grew up with the original movie are old enough now to immediately recognize all the flaws (and, if you’re like me, may have realized that even the original movie wasn’t really that good to begin with) and young kids probably have never even heard of the Swan Princess. What made anyone think this would gain an audience???

Kenzi Bat If I remember right the original 1996? film bombed at the box office but it was shown regularly on Cartoon Network and gained an audience then did well on Home Video sales, so sequels got made.

From what I understand, the original failed because it was trying to hard to be Disney. WB should've known that nobody is as good at being Disney as Disney. Seriously, they've got the market damn near cornered on animated dramas and musicals. Why didn't Warner Bros make it a comedy? It's what they're good at! Make a parody of Disney or something; that would've sold amazing!

In the newest movie (yes, there is another one) they're trying to outdo Disney AGAIN by more or less turning Elise...Alyse....however you spell her name, into the SP version of a Disney Princess right down to her design since they AGED HER UP. Elise was a bad inclusion into the series to begin with but for the newest movie they removed any sort of character she already had and just made her....boring. She's not brain-dead, even though the movie does turn into a romance story later, but she legit doesn't DO ANYTHING. She's like the audience member to her own movie which sort of removes all the things they made her and Lucas do since the Pirate movie. Oh, and did I mention the newest movie is a parody of America's Got Talent? YEAH. THIS IS HOW THEY MAKE THESE MOVIES NOW.

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! Now you are doomed to review every Swan Princess movie. Also the same company that made the later Alpha & Omega sequels crest animations are also responsible for this film.

Yes! YEEEES!!!! NOW ALL WILL KNOW MY HATRED FOR THIS FILM!!!! Every since i even set my eyes upon this... garbage fire of a film, i thought to myself "what mad man made this!?". The animation can be lazy, cheap and awful all at the same time, the jokes are just bad, the characters suck and DEAR *GOD!* THE PLOT HOLES!!!! 😨 JUST THE WEAKNESS TO THE WIND CHIMES GETS ON MY NERVES!!!! if i could: I'd burn every compute that made this abomination just so it can DIE!!!!!! ...... sorry, had to vent. It was the first time I've ever critically tore apart a film like this. It's that awful.

On the subject of Richard Rich, I think there’s one non Disney/A&O Film that’s decently underrated, that would be The Trumpet of the Swan. While not great by any means, I do feel like there’s lots of effort put into it with the voice acting, style of animation, music, and ideas, it just doesn’t have a good way of executing them. But if there’s ONE thing that makes the movie worthwhile, it’s Jason Alexander as the Father Swan. He is so over the top it’s hilarious

Sadly, Richard Rich is also responsible for Rankin Bass' animated version of 'The King and I', which was just a complete embarrassment that swayed the Rogers and Hammerstein estates to forbid any future animated adaptations of their musicals. 😞

Here's the thing about that; these movies confirm this but in the newest one (YES), they just implied that other countries and lands DON'T have things like talking animals and so on. I am dead serious. They had a group of visiting performers from other lands come in and when Rogers was trying to explain to them Skully and the other squirrels, they were legit confused about the idea of talking animals. MIND YOU THIS IS THE SAME MOVIE WHERE ONE OF THE OTHER PLOTS WAS TRYING TO TURN A MAN BACK FROM BEING A CHINESE DRAGON.

Here's my idea as to why Rothbart would need to destroy Christmas spirit in a way that makes sense. Perhaps in order to fully come back Rothbart would need to strengthen his power through people's misery, and what better way to make people miserable than destroying one of their most sacred Christmas traditions right in front of them? Additionally perhaps the reason he was weaker initially could be because since Christmas is considered a holy time of year the powers of evil are naturally weaker.

Hey I know Richard Rich. He did 'the trumpet of the swan'. Its prety good Bob, maybe you should review it. But I mostly know him from nest home videos.

8:06 I can actually sympathize. Granted, the phrasing could be a lot better, and I've never been smooched on by a granny before, but playing a brass instrument does indeed involve puckering, and practicing said pucker in order to maintain a proper embouchure is quintessential. So losing his pucker via granny kissing would be most unfortunate.

“Who was asking for more Swan Princess”? Well a lot of people nowadays get really nostalgic about the 90’s. It’s possible the makers somehow thought since everyone was getting nostalgic about the 90’s they’d be ecstatic if there was another Swan Princess. But what they forget is the reason people get nostalgic about 90’s movies is because they were genuinely good and well crafted. But hey. That’s just a theory, a film theory! Sorry I just had to.

True. In fact, Sony approached Nest Family Entertainment and Crest Animation Studios and asked them to revive the series because the home video and DVD sales for the first three movies were still steady. Originally the Christmas movie was going to be 2D animated like the first three movies.

They would have done this a million times better in 2d with kid voices or an all Russian cast & it would have been #1 most loved rather than a myth on the internet for half a decade before screening on television at random

Wait-wait-wait. Is it supposed to be Russia? Because... Dereck and Odette don't sound like a Russian names to me. Even from 19th century. I mean of course we have names like Peter and Catherine, but we actually called them Piotr and Ekaterina. I don't quite see how Dereck and Odette should sounds in this case.

Well the original Swan Lake was set in a Germanic kingdom of some sort. God knows how much Tchaikovsky knew about that region in the first place. Odette and Rothbart were names in the original ballet. The prince, however, was named Siegfried. I... guess the producers of the movie didn't want people to confuse him with the guy with the tigers?
