00:00 Casual Style Origin Introduction
Casual clothes have been around since civilization began. But across cultures, the biggest determining factor separating formal and casual garments was the class divide.
01:45 1880s-1910s
The Late Victorian/Edwardian eras look extremely formal compared to the 21st Century. But casual style very much existed. Practical solutions were a huge part of clothing in these decades.
03:24 The 1920’s
Following WW1, more technical fabrics in workwear gained popularity. Niche items, like leather jackets, were used as hard-wearing options for more laborious jobs or exposure to the elements.
04:35 The 1930’s
During the Great Depression, many men simply couldn’t afford to replace their clothing often. While suits were still extremely commonplace, workwear items like overalls were also seen.
05:15 The 1940’s
Cloth rationing in relation to WWII had a major influence on style. Dress shirts were now seen as acceptable when worn unlayered.
06:15 The 1950’s
Following the war and the relaxation of rationing, people were aching to try out new styles. While many people were content to slowly evolve their style, the various youth counter-culture movements came to the fore in the 1950s.
07:24 The 1960’s
The Counterculture movement exploded in the mid-1960s. Mod fashions seemed incongruous with traditional items like stingy brim fedoras. Celebrities like the Beatles, Jimi Hendrix & The Rolling Stones also promoted a more egalitarian, casual style of dress.
08:26 The 1970’s
If the 1950s and 60s were about style experimentation, then the 1970s pushed things into overdrive! Cheaper construction methods and fabrics (in particular, a heavy focus on synthetics) meant that more people were able to change their wardrobes regularly.
9:19 The 1980s
While the 1970s created a clear divide between formal and casual styles, the 80s was the decade that made them polar opposites. As typified in popular stories set in the 1980s such as Wall Street and American Psycho, the power of tailoring returned with a vengeance.
10:55 The 1990s
The 90s showcased the continuation of how people experimented with casual clothes. Oversized clothing was somewhat popular in the 80s, but the 90s took it even further.
11:45 2000s-Now
Now that we’ve seen how casual style has grown in prevalence over the last 150 years or so, it’s no surprise that casual is king in the 21st Century. With a more modern version of “athleisure” continuing to be a sign of luxury for many.
13:55 Conclusion
With that said, we’re curious: what do you think of casual style overall? How do you incorporate it into your wardrobe? And which era of historical casual style is your favorite?

As a university student on a budget, focusing my (very small) wardrobe on classic casual style has been invaluable. Most of it exists somewhere between corduroy jacket and pea coat formality wise, but 90% of it can be combined with 90% of everything else. I'm particularly a fan of 30s/40s workwear and aviator styles- a half decent flat cap is at the top of my shopping list.
The pandemic and growth in working from home has further pushed casual wear forward. A lot of my friends never wear a suit unless they _feel like it_ and, in a way, that will only make more formal items fun again. In my case, however, I've become slightly less casual in everyday life, but for practical reasons. I still work face-to-face, and a collar is a great way of keeping a lanyard from annoyingly touching my neck, while having one or more shirt pockets is really useful for quick access to a mask, getting on and off a busy train.
Excellent and comprehensive history. And without judgement, as it should be, because a true style aficionado will appreciate all those style trends
It is so validating to know that at least one person at GG wears Old Spice on occasion. It was my first fragrance, and first fragrances are like first cars; I probably wouldn't daily my first, but I sure would love to have it for a day again -- the smell alone brings back so many memories. The first car or fragrance isn't usually the favorite, but it's almost always the first favorite 😉

Love that Preston chose Old Spice. I wonder if he occasionally uses any other “old school “ or classic fragrances? Another fine video from Preston.
Casual clothing does have its place. But I think society as a whole tends to overdo it. It's sad that people don't even try to dress nice anymore for occasions like church, wedding, or funeral.

Yeah, and even the suits today are not as formal and the quality of fabric is hideous. I’ve got a Bonjour 1890s and a tale coat 1910s also a smoking from early 1900s it’s crazy how quality of fabric has changed. These outfits are bought second hand for like 25 bucks each. I went to a store that sold fancy clothes and specialized themselves in formal wear for weddings and such. Their suits were very poor and even their tale coats were synthetic. The worst part is that they charge you 1 000s of dollars for a fit.
Long time Gentleman's Gazette fan. You're rockin' the beard, Preston. Thanks for the content.

Oh yes! I agree!
I stumbled here from a working-class parallel universe and had a good laff. Soon I was taken in by the artistry and dry humor enough to drop some preconceptions. You have been subbed by this fashion-backward peasant.
Still love the classic menswear style tho!
I, too, have a weakness for Western snap shirts, and in cooler weather am perpetually clad in a brown tweed Kerry cap from Mucros Weavers. I could probably be described as a shawl collar cardigan enthusiast, and, as a leathercrafter, am almost always echoing brown leather shoes or boots with a hand-dyed belt with subtle tooling details, and a watch with a brown leather band. For me, a substantial share of the magic in dressing formally derives from its relative rarity and my regular practice of curated casual style... which I would describe as somewhere between Southern Literary Chic and Traditional Irish Poet Attire. Solid video. As usual.
Thank you gentlemen for the continued excellent content! Happy Friday, and have a marvelous weekend! Lisa

Like your brown boots Preston! Casual style is nice, I like a mixture of casual with elegant, new with vintage
Thank you for the history lesson Preston. I like the sport coat with a waist coat and a button down oxford look.
(1) Love the rugged elegance of the outfit, Preston. The leather jacket is king, and combined with the flannel shirt, jeans, and flat-cap it all flows together. (2) It's hard for me to pin down which period had the best casual dress, BUT, my favorite casually-dressed figure in the video is Ernest Hemingway. Like his prose, his casual dress had a refined musculature about it that complemented his physical/facial features while creating iconic photos.

Love the outfit. Traditional / Classic Menswear never goes out of style.
Man! I love this channel! Thank you!
I dress smart casual for school but I typically don’t go much lower in formality than that. Depending on the outing I will throw on a polo and some jeans with a windbreaker or a sport coat but if the temperature really climbs you’ll likely see me in some linen pants and a polo or a Hawaiian shirt.
Yes, OLD SPICE. It's my every day splash for a few years now (I save my more expensive stuff for occasions) and i'm asked at least once every few weeks what aftershave i'm wearing. It gets a bad rap in history, but its mild and pleasent, not over powering like Brut and it gets more compliments than the big hitters, Creed, Tom Ford & Floris in my collection.
I love that beard of yours! It looks really good on you
Excellent video, GG! Found this one really interesting and enjoyable. Cool to see how the evolutions of casual and formal style intertwine. Also 10:58 is a sleeve length nightmare across the board. Jus' sayin'.

Thank You for the Video 😀
A good video this, I do like a good vintage along with some modern flair, I rocked a bomber jacket with a tweed baker boys hat, a herringbone waistcoat over a grandfather shirt, black jeans with a brown retro inspired laced up boots. Mix and match lads, tis fair class. ☘
The 1930's serial movie cowboy look is overdue for a comeback.
Great video!! Personally, I think nowadays there is a time and place for everything. I think men's style has evolved in a way that you are able to express yourself with clothing. I am a big fan of classic style, so when there is a formal event, I go all out on my "Gentlemen's Gazette" outfits because I enjoy it and i want to communicate to people that this event is important to me so I took the time to dress my very best. Most of the time, I wear smart casual. It works for most things I do. And sometimes it's just a lazy sunday, and i wear athleisure. It does bother me when I see younger males in the office dress way too casually, but at the end of the day, that's their choice.
Could you guys do a video/article on shoulder padding and shoulder styles? I could not find anything on this topic.
While mentioned a democratization in (casual) styling, I do find the contemporary lacks some sort of its own destinctive character. Like how will the 2020s be considered in 2050 for example... I can't quite imagine

That's a bold choice! What outfit/item are you most keen to try out?
When casual clothing and behavior is accepted on all occasions, it basically means "wear and do what you want." The problem is that people tend to become careless when there is no social shaming at all. Conclusion: It is now allowed to represent anything through clothing, regardless of what social class you belong to. The way you dress and behave becomes a visible measuring device of your own self-respect. That too has never been different
Nice outfit Preston! 👍🏾
very nice video
Wow! Watching this history makes me appreciate how far my personal style has evolved. Not a dandy by any means but I do have a real good awareness of what I choose to wear whenever I venture out into my world. Cooosing how you present yourself to others is important.
I'm retired & live in Florida, on an island. I created some rules for dressing in retirement: 1. No suits but wear a sport coat whenever possible, preferably with a pocket square, but no tie. 2. Wear a tux whenever possible with a self tied bow tie. This is usually on a cruise, otherwise it's too hot. 3. For day wear it's Tommy Bahama camp shirts or similar with shorts - that includes no belts (you never tuck them in) and slip on shoes without socks. (ugh! especially white socks). These are the only 'brand logos' I wear, otherwise you're a billboard for the manufacturer. (GAP, Old Navy, Tommy Hilfiger, etc.) I'm not big on polos and by my rules T shirts are for working in, never as a shirt because it's not an actual shirt. (Please mention somewhere in a video that men should NEVER where an armless shirt anywhere, inside or out, where they are eating! Hairy armpits, ugh!) I do have 1 pair of dress shoes but otherwise I can't be bothered with tying shoes. (Short story - tried to follow a lacing method that Rafael did in a video but made a cool mistake - the laces ended up never crossing so all the the laces are lined up parallel.) Finally, I never wear any kind of 'sports' wear unless I'm going to the gym.
I always wear a hat in public. Does that make me counter counter-cultural? I am fine with casual wear but under no circumstances will I go out in public looking like a slob or bum. No broken jeans, sagging pants or pajamas. I don't even like tee shirts any longer.
Preston, do my eyes deceive me? A western style snap button shirt? Get thee to Rockmount in Denver Posthaste for the ne plus altra of western shirts!
I'm digging the beard Preston.
Great lesson. Aint nothing wrong with old spice

I’m gonna go with Ernest Hemingway as my casual style icon. 😊
I feel like the casual style has shifted a lot from 2010 -2024. Shifting from a tighter fit back to a more baggy style. Boot cut jeans with higher waist and tucked T-shirts. Also haircut, now it feels like the middle part is popular. Girls also shifted to the same thing although now we see a rising trend of the complete opposite, low waist pants with less baggy shirts and even tank tops. Kinda like Brittney spears 2000s. 2020 a lot of younger women had more high waist jeans and puffier blouses together with a the long black coat. That’s no more..
I’m not a fan of long shirts so I like a polo shirt since it is practically a T shirt with shorts. The mullet style of fashion LOL Business on top; party on the bottom.
I'm extremely guilty in wearing modern casual. The only part of my outfit today that exceeds what I paid for the vintage Polo jacket I just picked up are the Redwings. Even Levis are less than a quality pair of slacks in my size.
Nice video, fellas!
How about a video on letterman/varsity jackets

Eli Whitney
The advent of The Beatles had the largest influence on me in fashion and dress. They started in black leathers then progressed to the collarless suits and the iconic Beatle Boots. Then it was on to Mod and finally the hippie culture. I was fortunate to live in a major city so finding the clothes of 60s fashion was a simple matter. Staying current was easy. Those living in more rural areas had less options and choices until the "went to town " so to speak. As a young adult in the 70s I was casual in tee shirt and jeans but I also wore a more dressed up look when out on a night on the town. My recall is that The Disco craze while short lived returned us to the three piece suit once more. Then it suddenly gave way to The Urban Cowboy look. It to was quickly gone as Punk and New Wave took us to new horizons. Since then it has become very eclectic. From everything thats wild to the most dully conservative. No clear dominating themes anylonger. There's a nitch for everyone it seems.

Being a gentleman in my middle 30's it has been exciting to upgrade my wardrobe while learning about all sorts of different garments so thanks for all the hard work you put into these videos. I'm truly curious though about your thoughts on Drawstring slacks. I know they tend to be more informal and not really for business meetings but they are definitely better than wearing sweats as they obviously are more dressy. Anyways I'm enjoying my Linen/Cotton pair and hoping to get a 2nd pair in the future.

Every style looks good if One: (1) has a good build. (2) follows the golden ratio. (3) follows color theory [shade hues...]. (4) is familiar with it's complexion. (5) knows how to combine materials, and how different textures interact within an outfit. (6) understands its environment and the cultural context. (7) understands pattern, and what works for One's own build. (8) comprehends the impact of the message he intends to emit, which comes from knowing color psychology and being familiar with historical connotations certain garments are seding. (9) is open-minded and willing to learn. (10) knows tailor by its first name (yes...casual garments are NO EXCEPTION) D. M.

Working From Home during COVID has also changed what is considered casual & when it is allowed. Most employers have relaxed their dress codes knowing that not doing so would lead to more "quiet quitting."
Comfort as the primary criterion is vastly overrated.
oh now I understand why those people wear such style in certain decades bcos clothes were meant to be very practical, hence the heavy duty material. and also clothes were luxury, they don't have much new garments all the time. but after the industrial revolution, everything changed.. including how fast fashion nowadays. I always admire how the beatles wear their clothes. no wonder we could not see their fashion as common in this era
The modern idea of formal clothing comes from parts of Europe where summer was never hot. People today are impressed when you wear a waistcoat with your suit, but in the places that influenced modern formal clothing, layers were practical. I live in New Orleans, Louisiana, and if you've ever been here in the summer, you know why many of us own seersucker suits. The heat and humidity from June to September is comparable to a tropical environment. I wear shorts most of the year for comfort when I'm not going to work. It makes me wish that indigenous Amazon tribes had wandered around the world influencing modern people's style of dress.
Cargo shorts are still my go to for everyday wear.

Guys wear t-shirts nowadays because it's freakin' HOT throughout half the year. I like watching old black-and-white movies because I like the way men and women used to look -- but I can't understand why they all aren't sweating buckets. Those movies show men wearing wool jackets and long sleeves and ties IN THE SUMMER. How did they survive? Were human beings MADE differently then?
@gentlemansgazette

Many people feel the heat differently. Jack and Preston are two GG members with similar builds, but Jack is very sensitive to the cold, and Preston runs hot. That is definitely a feature, but there are also so many other factors including artificial temperatures in buildings, etc.

My opinion is, that casual clothing hasn´t brought anything good to humanity in general. Yes, if people looked casual and still ellegant, then maybe it would make sense, but nowadays, casual is also sloppy and this lacks dignity making people not being civilized. It also reflects in behaviour and people tend to behave in worse manners when dressing down. So for a healthy psychology, formal or at least ellegant casual is important, so people behave well. People falsely believe, that clothing is just clothing, but it is far from the truth. Like I said, clothing is a tool for better psychology and thinking overall. It is sad, that people are not that smart to figure it out and striving to make a world better place. It is clearly obvious, that if formal dress codes are not enforced, nothing will improve, ever. All in all, casual life just doesn´t work!
