As I get older ( 63) and slower I’m choosing comfort over weight and speed all day. My son however ( 37 and faster ) favours the opposite.

Yes, weight absolutely matters. It really annoys me when shoetubers say “it’s heavy but you don’t really notice it.” Wrong! You will notice it if you run high mileage. Maybe if you’re only running 3 or 4 miles it’s not a big deal, but try doing a long run workout in a shoe that’s too heavy and you’ll not have a good time. If you’re just running easy having a heavier shoe can even be somewhat desired, but if you want to put in any kind of pace the heavier shoes will hold you back.

I'm from the old school (66 years old) when you had two pairs of shoes; one for training one for racing. The weight of the trainer wasn't really an issue. Protection from the pounding mattered much more. You even ran intervals and "tempos" in them (we didn't use the term tempo back then, just a fast run!). When you put on your racers you did receive a psychological boost. My basic thinking was always "train heavy, race light", applied both to flats and spikes. Always avoided using lightweight spikes for anything other than races.

All depending on the purpose of your run. If you are doing a longer Zone 2 run, with the purpose of building that solid aerobic foundation, it doesn't really matter what the weight is of the shoe, I think more important is that it doesn't impact your run form or give you any injuries. If you are doing tempo runs or higher intensity workouts, with the purpose of speed, I think you will benefit from a lighter responsive shoe, as you want to get to the required speed (again your run form and avoiding any injuries has to be the priority). I try to run some of my tempo (threshold) runs in my racing shoes so I know how they feel, how I respond to them and what they give to you speed- and effort wise.

It really depends on what you're using them for. The prime x v2 is a freak shoe that is very fast and good at the niche pace for marathon training. The youtube reviews actually put me off the shoe but I had a chance to pick some up for cheap and really glad I did. I don't find the weight negatively impacts my runs in any way. Maybe the shoe just works for me where shoes like alphafly don't.

As a heavier dude wearing larger shoe sizes, i never considered shoe weight to be a factor, except like 10+ years ago . Back then the plush type of Daily trainers were 400+ grams in my size and in many cases bottom heavy and really not on the comfort levels of trainers now. If a shoe is comfortable enough now, i don't mind the weight, but at the same time my favourite shoe is the Superblast for sure.

Because of the need to accelerate and decelerate the weight of the shoe during each running stride, the effect of 100 grams on your feet, is much higher than 100 grams on your waist. However, research has found out that if a light shoe lacks comfort, the foot expends more energy absorbing the extra shock, hence why even African runners don’t run record marathons barefoot, even if they are used to running barefoot. Luckily the new super shoes are both light and comfortable.

Weight is definitely a major factor in making a purchase, but there are many others to consider. I have the Novablast 4, Nimbus 25 & 26. I definitely feel that the Novablast is lighter. But between the two Nimbuses (?), I don't notice the weight difference as much as I do the difference in the rocker profile

My favourite shoes are the New Balance SC Trainer v1 and the More v4. Both are 'heavy' shoes, so I don't care that much about weight, as long as they don't feel heavy to me. The Novablast 3 felt like dragging a boat along, while it isn't a heavy shoe.

What a lot of runners don't take into account are the weight of the person running and what they are carrying for extra weight! A runner weighing 130 lbs vs a runner 180 pounds is a big significance! Also, more comfy socks might add 1-2 ounces.add on Calf Sleeves or a running belt. So, shoe weight is minor when other factors are considered!

Unfortunately the weight goes up as the the breathability and cushioning get both get lost..I can only get breathability and cushioning comfort in top end shoes that are lightweight..same reason why I use mostly racing shoes cos they have the best foams and uppers..

I think once you get below about 12 oz you start getting diminishing returns and it matters less and less. Unfortunately, I think too many manufacturers chase lower and lower weights cutting fractions of ounces but at the cost of durability, especially the outsoles.

To me weight matters most when you’re either running fast (sprints) or long (4+ miles for me). But what matters most to me is how the shoe “feels.” Some shoes are over 10 or 11oz but they don’t “feel” heavy, and so that’s ok for me. If a shoe feels heavy, even if it says it has reasonable weight, then it’s a deal breaker for me.

Depends on how good your muscles are and on the distance. If you lack muscle resistence, you will prefer lower weight. Also if you do longer distances. This is my case also: I prefer less than 250g in mens size 10.

I actually LIKE a heavier shoe for easy / recovery runs. It keeps me from being tempted to push the pace when I should chill out. For runs that are supposed to be quicker, though, and obviously for race day, light shoes are the order of the day.

I find that weight is a good way of managing and controlling pace. Easy run in a 300g + shoe for example. Trail shoes or race shoes it’s the biggest factor but not so on other types. Race shoes below 230g. Speed or tempo shoe below 250g, daily shoe 260 - 300g, all in UK9.

I do check the weight. I am on the same side as you on Prime X2, It did not work for me, was too heavy. But in the same time NB More V4 is same weight in my size and it is working ok for easy paces. I feel I am spoiled by Superblast which is very light compared to any other shoe at that range of stack

I find the geometry of a shoe can contribute to it feeling heavy. Example is the Novablast 3 was quite light in hand but I always felt it ran heavy and never felt smooth always a bit clumpy. Vs the Pegasus 39 which is heavier. I feel that runs smoother and feels lighter on foot. Just less responsive

Studies say you lose 1% of your running economy for every 100g you add to your feet, but I guess it's more about how shoes fit your running style. I’m 5’2” 60kg and like to run in a variety of shoes. One that I was gutted to find just too heavy for me was Puma Deviate Nitro 2. I use other Pumas and had high hopes and I kept trying but it was as if the shoe had a layer of heavy mud added to it. I guess it will be some other factor that just means I am feeling the weight more than would be expected. I replaced them with Adidas Takumi Sen 8 - bliss!

For me it depends what type of run it is. So if you are fast, (I'm not) or doing speed work or racing, especially with a high turnover (cadence) yes weight matters. Right now I have to use what I can get (out of work, made redundant) but luckily Puma has great shoes which are pretty lightweight and at a great price. Maybe for slower recovery type runs it wouldn't matter so much as cushioning is nice to have for that and yeah that would add some weight.

I want the lightest shoe that isn't causing a major compromise in other things I need for the shoe's purpose. I really don't care about "plushness." A simple upper that fits well is plenty comfortable, so grams in centimeter thick heel collars and tongues are useless to me. If I want a cushioned long run shoe and two are about equal in cushioning and performance but one is significantly lighter, I'm going with it. Within reason, it's more important than price too.

Weight is kinda important, but for me too much stack is a drawback. Anything really over 39mm in stack is too much, unless it is a race day shoe, but that then usually correlates to weight as those "max cushion" shoes are also heavier. As a lighter runner the huge stack and weight just feels clunky to me and I can feel my form affected when I get tired in those shoes.

When I played football I wore Adidas Copa Mundials and blacked out the stripes, then a pro started giving me these super lightweight Adizero things thats felt fantastic but lasted about a month. So I went back the heavier better looking Copas. As a runner Ive abandoned style and wear Altras for medicinal purposes due to wide toe box&zero drop, regardless of what they weight. I wear vivo's to work as they look alot lot better though.

The scientific measurements says that every 100g extra weight subtracts 1% from running economy. In my opinion, there are only very few shoes that is heavy but compensate with the tech they offer (Prime X Strung OG for example) As a general rule, I prefer lighter shoes. I am sensitive to weight so shoes like Nimbus 25/26 doesn't work for me. Even Novablast 4 felt very bulky.

Running shoe weight does not matter at all unless you are at the very peak of performance trying to eke out seconds per marathon. Even the heaviest of modern running shoe will be a lot lighter than the best shoes from 10-20 years ago. It’s a nonsense. The new shoes that are “heavy” are offset by foam performance and comfort. It’s all psychosomatic. Also carrying your carkeys, phone, headphones, watch or even a baseball cap or sweatband are heavier than this extra ounce you can somehow appreciate on a shoe. 😂
