The surprising strengths of materials in the nanoworld | Julia Greer | TEDxCERN
This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. Imagine being able to hold all the material it took to build an airplane in the palm of your hand. Julia Greer combines different design structures at varying nano-scales to create super strong and super light materials. Her research is changing the landscape of materials available today.
Julia Greer researches lightweight, 3-dimensional nano-architectures and designs experiments to assess their properties and deformation mechanisms. These ‘nano-metamaterials’ have multiple applications, which provide a rich ‘playground’ for fundamental scientific pursuits. Greer, professor of Materials Science at CalTech, has a Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering from Stanford University. She was recognized as a Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum in 2014. She is also an accomplished concert pianist.

Wish I could be there to clap for her. The only problem with nanoscale materials is the cost of mass-fabrication, as it outweighs the traditional method and materials. That is why these all are only used mostly in space tech.
I'm gonna get my nieces and nephews some zen magnets and let them make these structures. There is such a beauty to the precision, geometry, of bonds... And you get to play and think like that daily; awesome. Mahalo

This is all fine and wonderful and it's incredible what new materials we have at our disposal but first we have to do something about those corporations that make a lot of money from us using lots of fuel and power, they will not be happy if they sell less of the stuff that they sell. They will do anything all that they can to sabotage those who invent and make things that use less of the energy that they sell. The Koch brothers, for example, are guilty of massive amounts of pollution and nobody does anything because they are so powerful and have their fingers in so many pies and pay a lot of money into political funds and lobbying so that any new inventions are shot down and buried before they even have a chance to prove themselves. Lastly Julia, there is an amazing material called velcro which you should stick on that darn cardigan please.
