    Ms. Hopper, I cannot express my love and gratitude to you as you have taken me on an incredible journey. First the narrative of the history of these great artists is not only informative, but makes me want to go out and dig up information about them and study their works. Which ties into point 2. I’ve never heard of a lot of these greats, because I am not a huge student but just an amateur taking pictures. That has changed because of you!!! Every Christmas, Birthday, Valentines Day, etc. I know I’m getting a book about an artist you’ve highlighted. Lastly your images as well as the photos of the artist you’ve spotlighted make me need to go out and shoot. For that, I’m eternally grateful.

    There is another book "Sergio Larrain Vagabond Photographer" edited by Agnes Sire who corresponded with him for 30years some of which appears in the book although it is mainly a collection of his work including the London series. As the title suggests he preferred solitude and working on his own. He was always in search of his Self of finding being in that state of Grace and the creative process of photography allowied him to be in the moment. However being discovered by others and becoming a Magnum Associate was perhaps a double edge sword. Yes he had received vaildation of his work and by implication himself as a person but he was less happy with the commercial aspects that came with it. Commissions, projects and the pressures of timelines etc. So he eventually retired from the scene going back to his interest in eastern spiriuality meditation yoga to rediscover himself. The big Who Am I question still to be answered. Thanks for another great video and reminding me that the title was on my bookshelf

    Thank you for that insight Dennis, I didn't know about that book but I'm glad that I was right in my assumptions of internal conflicts and the nature of the work he was getting definitely a lot of food for thought there when it comes to being a professional photographer. I'll see if I can grab that book, would for sure give me more insight. Thank you for watching!

    His father was the architect Sergio Larraín García-Moreno, dean of architecture, National Architecture Prize of Chile and art collector, who enjoyed great prestige as a modernist author and was founder of the Chilean Museum of Pre-Columbian Art. At the age of eighteen he traveled to the United States in order to study forestry engineering at Berkeley. So Sergio comes from a wealthy family which helped him in his first travels. There was certainly an enormous contrast between his social environment and that of the majority of Chileans and Latin Americans who were organizing against poverty and social injustice.

    As a street photographer if I can call myself that I also struggle with seeing the discrepancy between rich and poor especially within the context of the place I’m creating my body of work and yes indeed, you want to shoot the less fortunate with dignity. It’s easy to have your psyche affected negatively by seeing people struggling to survive from day to day when indeed the “system” seems to leave these people behind. I certainly understand him there. Great episode!

    Thanks for your research and presentation as always. It’s always a puzzle when someone gives something away that is prized by others and even more so when no explanation is offered. According to my meagre research he came from a very wealthy family, so he hadn’t grown up wanting materially. However, he empathised with the poor and probably admired the strengths he saw in their ability to live vital lives despite their lack of material comforts. My take is that he was initially driven by his artistic impulses, the pleasure of making photos and the entry it gave him into people’s lives. I would say that his beginnings with photography gave him the feeling of heading towards something more meaningful in his life but he reached a point where he felt what he was doing was leading him away from that path. He must have had very strong convictions or else a very strong need to pursue something he felt was a more important goal. Sebastiao Salgado turned away from photography also. The lesson I take from this is that being true to yourself is more important than anything else you do in life.

  • @AlexE070
    @AlexE070 Жыл бұрын

    Sometimes working towards a goal can be more rewarding than the end goal itself. Some people find that when they achieve what they have worked so hard for... it's just not what they really wanted and doesn't live up to their expectations. And that can be disheartening. Not saying that happened for Sergio, but it was something that popped into my mind as you told his story and how he backed away from professional photography. Great video, as always.

    Captivating! You asked for suggestions: I think I commented a while ago but you might have missed it; I've always been fascinated by 'environmental art' -- in particular Andy Goldsworthy and Richard Long. Environmental art is an anomaly because it is often created well away from the public gaze (especially Richard Long, who had a thing for deserts), and so can only be represented through the (literally in this case ) 'medium' of photography. The photograph is therefore the only record of what is in many cases an ephemeral work; and I've always felt the best are those which seem to capture the essence of that impermanence in the way they record the art work.

    Educate your eye. Then, photograpn for yourself. Only then you'll have your style. From what you showed about Sergio Larraín, it seems to me that, while photography was useful for his expression, he used it. Then, he went for other medias, a different way of life, to express his views and inner feelings. Like many other photographers did. I see he as an artist much more than a photographer. Someone who used the media but didn't live for it exclusively. Maybe that was what made him such a very good photographer. This kind of disengagement many times help us produce our better images because we're focusing on what matter, not on making a "good image". We have educated our eyes, our brain, and photographing for ourselves. Things become natural then and show the photographer we are because we're free from rational composition and everything photo related. The focus is on the moment and what it expresses. This is how any creative process works: input, incubation and flow

    Dignity, dignity and once more dignity. Our job to capture the reality of those who are despised or rejected by society and not simply add to their anxieties or worries. That involves communication and negotiation not simply ''stealing images'.

    It seems to me this is another facet of HCB's (and others') quote that he "didn't take pictures so much as they took him". From your video, it has struck me that the balance between the photographer and the subject is a delicate one and that pressing too far either on the one side or the other is damaging. One turns out narcissistic, self-indulgent and finally empty work on the one hand, or, on the other hand, loses one's way within the demands of what's in front of the lens. (It makes me wonder if regaining that balance is what led Larrain to meditation). As you say, a thought-provoking video. Thanks as always--!

    The image at 00:47 reeled me in although there a lot of images in the video worthy of the pause button. The main figure anchors the composition/narrative but the angular shapes and reflective surface are off kilter and imbue the scene with energy.. I agree that people should treat their photo subjects with dignity, and respect so the phots don't veer into the exploitive. However, I would add that a certain amount of detachment might help as well. Not just from the subjects but whoever might view the photos as well. Just shoot for yourself, not as part of some shared idea. I am curious about Larrain being born into a wealthy family and how that informed the rest of his life, particularly when he abandoned his photography, his wife, and seemed to embrace an austere lifestyle. I thought for a moment when Tatiana mentioned a documentary was not available in her part of the world we were about to smoothly roll into a VPN sponsorship. 😆

    My driver's license is almost the polar opposite of dignity. The clerk that took it was giving me a dirty look the entire time. When I politely asked her to retake it she said: "No"; then gave another mean look. I guess she didn't like my looks. Maybe she was having a bad day? Dignity. I like Woody Allen's approach to small personal injustices He. Turns it into comedy. Dignity. Thats what most folks want; in any kind of art; something heroic, and uplifting. I love paintings of Joan Of Arc. I'm getting ready; a to watch this video; a third time now.

    That’s fascinating how he ended up going away from photography. Kinda makes the ethics of looking at his work complicated. On one hand, an artist should have command on what they share and is available of theirs, but simultaneously, if there’s value in art to others, does it even still belong to the original artist?

    Interesting question, that's why I said it was kind of interesting example to be looking at someone's work that didn't want it to be seen technically speaking, like Vivian Maier, I suppose its his work but also the work he produced he didn't do it alone, the world participated, people who he probably didn't ask if he could photograph them given how fleeting the moment must've been. An interesting loophole, is it the artists or the worlds ? Maybe both.

    Qui siamo a livelli superiori. Composizione impeccabile e sorprendente, secondo me il suo lavoro su Valparaiso è un caposaldo della fotografia mondiale, esattamente come Exiles di Koudelka.
