Jonathan talks with Dr. Merlin Sheldrake and Professor Tim Spector to try and find out.
Merlin is biologist at the heart of the mushroom movement. He’s author of the bestseller Entangled Life: How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds and Shape Our Futures.
Tim is a professor of genetic epidemiology at King’s College London, director of the Twins UK study, scientific co-founder of ZOE, and one of the world’s leading researchers.

    Watching Zoe has convinced me to try and eat mushrooms every day and, specifically, shiitake if I can. I now add them to meals whenever I can with my avocado or poached eggs in a morning, chicken salad or pasta meals in an evening. I have no idea of the actual bodily benefits long term but they are genuinely tasty lightly cooked in olive oil.

    My favourite food, difficult sourcing a variety of mushrooms. I did buy a shitake log in the 80s, but wasn't too successful. Loved this programme, really interesting. Thank you.

    Tim does leave himself open to charges of over-hyping things! DRIED mushrooms might be 25% protein, but while dried, they are not edible in any quantity. You need to eat rather a large portion of mushrooms to get even 10g of protein. VITAMIN D is produced by ultra violet light on mushrooms. BUT there is very little uv in UK winter daylight, and window glass cuts it out anyway (hence you won’t get sunburned through a window!) To boost the vitamin content, your mushrooms need to sunbathe outdoors and in strong sunlight (like they have in summer in Southern Germany where the research was done.) Yes mushrooms are a useful dietary component, but please, let’s not get carried away. BTW, another caveat on foraged mushrooms - fungi soak up heavy metals (like lead) from contaminated soil, so don’t pick them from roadsides or “brownfield” sites. When learning mushroom identification, I’d suggest starting with the most dangerous ones, so that you can positively ID those immediately when you come across them, and avoid picking them and contaminating the rest of your basket!

    Mushroom companies expose mushrooms to UV light to get the vit D - It provides an exact quantity rather than sunlight lol

    @@britpopification lol - some mushroom companies expose some of their production to some uv to make vitamin “enriched” mushrooms, for sale at a higher price. But it was Prof Spector that a few months back advised UK newspaper readers to put their mushrooms on their windowsills to boost the Vitamin D. LOL

    2tbsp? Can you even taste coffee at that point or just mushroom? I add 1tsp of mixed mushroom powder to coffee and the whole thing tastes like mushroom 😅

    Fresh mushrooms contains maybe 3 grams of protein per 100 grams.

    One huge problem with a lot of mushrooms available to purchase is that they are grown in peat and the continued use of peat to grow mushrooms commercially is adding significantly to carbon emissions and biodiversity loss. So I only buy mushrooms that are produced by using a non-peat based medium - and these are also organic ones so free of pesticide/herbicide residues.

    @@britpopification I'm not making that connection, just pointing out there there is a huge environmental problem with using peat to grow mushrooms, and most growers do

    I eat a lot of Japanese food, so I use a lot of mushrooms, especially dried shiitake mushrooms, the tastiest! 😊

    Any idea why some of their spores want kill me? Gives me absolutely terrible diarrhoea 🤮 A day later made cavolo nero & bean soup. Same effect. The cavolo nero was on top of the oyster mushrooms, hence i figured its the spores. Button/ closed cup/ shiitake/ chestnut are fine for me 😢

    03:48 Am I going crazy or has the pronunciation of _chitin_ recently changed from "ky-tin" to "ch-itt-in"? If not, it's somewhat worrying that the Prof appears unfamiliar with the conventional pronunciation.

    It's kai.tn This podcast is getting rubbish. The faked baroque and overly sissy style of this Jonathan person combined with his ignorance is super frustrating - I've been watching the show because of the prof but I tend to avoid for a while. At least this time it's not the two hours verbal diarrhea type of podcast.

    @@susanlindsay1071the level of 25% protein is only reached after the mushrooms have been dried - and I doubt you’ll manage to eat a significant quantity in that form. Raw mushrooms are typically more like 3% protein, so to get even 10g of protein you’ll need to eat over 300g of mushrooms, which is quite a lot. The fibre content (of raw mushrooms) is about 1%, so that same mega-portion is only going to get you about 1/10 of your daily fibre target.

    Love eating mushrooms but be very careful with lion’s mane. I made the mistake of taking this for peripheral neuropathy. Big mistake! In my opinion this mushroom is very dangerous.

    Fungi above and under the ground are vital for the trees and other things. They have their own kingdom, more like animals than plants in a way! Therefore, because they live of off both inorganic and... organic materials the meaty savory taste that provides the umami, (like tomatoes), that we crave... is there! Only "real" plants only live of off inorganic materials that they convert and make themselves eatable for us! They are as close to the building blocks themselves as possible that we can eat and... without diluting the vital nutrients we need! I'm not sure why I'm writing this, but just in case someone might find it interesting or something 😅 And most vegans doesn't think of this or doesn't care... But I do as the kind of vegan I am, I always... always act in favor of the precautionary principle, so I don't eat them... 💚🌿

    I’m concerned that increasing mushrooms in my diet with increase my Candida in my gut, I have a sensitivity “allergy” to yeast. I’m not finding any clear direction to confirm or deny my concerns
