and this absolutely does have a meaningful impact as all of us have friends and family who will take notice. in this connected age, the action of one individual can trigger a chain reaction that results in a global movement.

This talk is actually useful and practical. Not fatalistic but about an urgent topic. Bravo! 💜

when we put these impact sources side by side in a chart, we also have to take into consideration what value they provide. for example, a device like a laptop potentially provides HUGE value. I am sure miss Porcelijn would never have been able to learn everything she did and to compile this beautiful talk without the help of a computer. on the other hand, the consumption of meat, which has an impact just barely below that of devices, does only provide a minuscule value, or in some cases, is even detrimental to our health. so the 1. impact source really should not put the 2. in the shadow in this case.

Thanks for sharing. How about the reuse of human & animal excreta? To what extent can this make up for the losses from eating meat?

The world needed this ted talk I really hope that enough people will watch this!

There can be no change if the big companies don't compromise. Supply and demand is controlled mostly by the suppliers after the revolution in marketing -- especially after Edward Bernays. And considering that those same big companies are responsible for the biggest chunk of the negative impact on the environment, there has to be willing and well-intentioned people within the higher hierarchy to make this work. Otherwise it's the common folk doing all the hard work for just a small improvement.

I knew that car production was a big deal. About clearing land for cattle: it isn't necessary to clear cut all the trees. Keep the useful ones. Many innovative farmers are using interplanting techniques that allow cattle to utilize the tree leaves as food. The meat production is much higher per acre. The quality of meat is very good. Polyculture farming also reduces other stresses for cattle and the soil. The trees shade cattle in summer, so that heat ius moderated and cows continue to maintain/add weight. Trees allow break up of hardpan soils. Trees *and cattle* , when managed properly, *allow more/deeper penetration of water into the soil* . Both trees and cattle harvest and bring nutrients back up to the surface and resupply feed. Trees provide moisture retentive leaves, while cattle knock down grasses that help shade and protect roots from the hot sun and drying winds. Cattle creat divots in the soil that hold humus, seeds and water, encouraging new plant life. The trees also provide an additional harvest and crops for farmers, adding to their economic resiliency. Smart cattle farmers may cut some trees, but they know replanting with useful species of trees can increase their production and keep them solvent during otherwise lean years.

B uppy we don’t clear woods for land where the cattle could stand, we cut so many trees, especially in the rainforests, to grow corn, soy and all those crops then fed to cattle and other livestock animals. In such a case all trees need to be cut for enough space for a monoculture field. The way to go is going vegan! We need to stop filtering nutrients from plants through the dead bodies of living beings, and go for the plant foods straight away.

We India's using two Sim or triple Sim Chinese smart phones which are under 200$ or 300$ and more wire cables coming with them and I know we throw them after usage. We don't have any recycle or proper waste removal system. which we buy on average every 3 or 4 years.

You can do the experiments for yourself using any quickly-reproducing species like insects. Set up isolated breeding populations and change their environment in different ways. @@zalexanna I think you guys may find awkward her strong-non-native-English-accent or her kinda "nerdy" body language... And it's fine if you don't like her personality or if you don't agree with her methods/ideas/solutions, but this woman investigated a lot about the topic, she changed the direction of her career, focussed on searching for ways to make a substantial contribution/impact for an environmental cause, she and her family adapted their lifestyle only because they believe in these values... *She CLEARLY HAS A LOT OF PASSION. That's the one thing you can not deny.* Also, when you say she lacks the usual "TED Talk greatness", that implies you may have an unreasonable standard or be expecting a specific style of presentation... But this show brings people from all nationalities/backgrounds/professions to speak about their own experiences/ideas/feelings... We can't expect all of them to have the same style or charm or experience with this type of public speeches, they're very diverse people and some of them are academics who work indoors not necessarily professors who talk in public every day. Personally, I think that diversity and open-minded disposition is what makes this channel so interesting.

The most irritating thing in lectures is to start with a question. The worse is asking the people to stand up as it is so embarrassing.

Rajeshwar Sharma a question is a fantastic to get your audience on track to thinking and following your lecture. Also, having people stand up is a fantastic tactic to get people’s blood flowing which increases attentiveness and brain function. You don’t know how long they’ve been sitting for or how many talks they’ve seen in that day. It’s a sly tactic that has been shows to work. If you take communication classes they’ll explain this to people.

No sorry but it is too high level. No details. Why would i belive in what she is saying? Suddenly we need to became vegetarian and stop flying. Sounds like rabbit hole.

If you read the book you will see all the research, it's very thorough. I, for one, am happy to know where my biggest impact is so I can change my habits where possible.

@@kubbarkub I've been a vegetarian for 25+ years 🌿 I agree she is not sharing how the results were calculated; she hired specialists, those calculations are very complex. It might have been worthwhile to share some of that process, but there is so much to tell.
