How to save Earth with 5 minutes a day of responsible consumerism | Shaun Frankson | TEDxStanleyPark

This talk informs the audience on how to be an educated and conscious consumer. Why it's important to vote with your purchases. How to develop a 5-minute habit of making the responsible purchase to change the way corporations operate.
Shaun Frankson - shaunfrankson.com - has inspired millions of responsible consumers to ask companies to use Social Plastic® to help alleviate global poverty and ocean plastic pollution. In his 2017 TEDxStanleyPark talk, Shaun Frankson reveals how The Plastic Bank - plasticbank.org - leveraged a visible consumer driven demand to successfully inspire global organizations to change purchasing behaviors to increase their environmental and social impacts.
His inspirational message teaches why consumers are the most powerful force on earth and best positioned to save the planet. Through a habit of ethical, sustainable, locally sourced, cruelty free, green, eco and other various forms responsible purchasing you can be a change maker. Every purchase you make is a vote for how a product was made and for the company who made it. Corporations only produce what consumers buy repeatedly. When enough people stop buying a product, it stops getting made. When enough people stop buying from a company, it goes out of business. We're on the verge of a new era in which the average person is starting to act like a responsible consumer.
Every year over 8 million tons of plastic enters our ocean. By 2050 we are projected to have more plastic in our ocean than fish by weight. Ocean plastic is poisoning our food chains. But Ocean plastic is just one example of a human created global issue that can be solved through responsible consumerism. It only takes 5 minutes more to make a responsible purchase.
Shaun Frankson is the co-founder and chief strategist for The Plastic Bank. He is known as a modern day strategy guy, growth hacker and technology futurist. Shaun has made a career out of creating unique strategies that generate exponential results. He created the brand strategies to introduce Social Plastic® to the world, resulting in over 1 million supporters and 300 media features while attracting some of the world's largest organizations as partners and clients. He is currently working with IBM to launch a game changing APP based Blockchain and Hyperledger digital currency and exchange platform. Learn more at shaunfrankson.com and plasticbank.org

Sometimes it takes effort and planning to be a responsible consumer, but in the long run this effort and planning will go a long way and will become a habit. Bring your own bags shopping, don't pack everything into separate plastic bags, choose products that are not packed in foil+plastic+paper wrap+carton, choose products you can refill later. I live in a small city in China, and when I bring my own bags shopping and refuse plastic bags, they always give me a weird look. There is still no awareness of this problem in many places in the world. What I want to do is to go shopping, and after I've paid, I will unpack it in the shop, and leave all the waste I don't need for the shop to deal with. There are options, and there are choices we as consumers can make to make a difference. Good talk!

Here in Australia some of the Major supermarkets no longer give out plastic bags, you have to bring or by your own reusable bags. It is good that you continue to do that.

When consumers are left with no choice, resistance is the only mechanism left to send a message of what is no longer acceptable. Packaging is unnecessary and just marketing to sell you something, it also only make someone else money as you paid for it but throw it out. Reusable and sustainable options are the only ones we should accept /pay for, like my mustard from Europe that comes in a small glass beer cup for reuse after. I love it.

The real value of this impressive talk is in it's far reaching impact and consequences. Shaun has thrown the gauntlet at us. It's now in our hands to listen and take action for just 5 minutes a day. Or do nothing and bemoan the degradation of our cherished planet. Thank you for being so daring ....and sharing your laudable work!

Thank you Shaun. It's about right action. Beautiful solution and ideas. I humbly offer this Vedic prayer, one of the oldest hymns of praise for Gaia-Bhū Devi-Goddess Earth consort to Lord Narayana. Bhūsūktam honors the inseparable essence of Mother Earth-Bhū Devi and the Divine. The Veda-s understand and revere the Earth, a symbol of tolerance and forbearance, even as she bears the burdens of our actions and misdeeds. Let us be responsible stewards in bringing healing and care to our beautiful planet. Let us live consciously, envisioning and appreciating Mother Earth as the source of life, health, fertility, and prosperity. Every day when we wake, as we place our feet upon her, let us begin the day with a prayer of gratitude, protection, and forgiveness. Namaste! @

I really like the 'novel' solution you have developed. I'm all behind you! I run an award winning UK eco company and we pack and send nearly everything in compostable materials. It is always a challenge trying to source plastic alternatives, but most of the time I can use cellulose or corn starch bags, but still my preference is always paper and for packing heavy items, straw! It would be easier for me if there were more eco packaging manfacturers in the UK and if I didn't have to spend days on the internet finding the most eco alternatives.

Yes, you are right the earth will be here forever. Ecclesiastes 1:4 A generation is going, and a generation is coming, But the earth remains forever. Also it will be inhabited. Isaiah 45:18 For this is what Jehovah says, The Creator of the heavens, the true God, The One who formed the earth, its Maker who firmly established it, Who did not create it simply for nothing, but formed it to be inhabited: “I am Jehovah, and there is no one else. This system of things is going down as foretold at Daniel 2:44 “In the days of those kings the God of heaven will set up a kingdom that will never be destroyed. And this kingdom will not be passed on to any other people. It will crush and put an end to all these kingdoms, and it alone will stand forever,"
