The sun is at an angle so that a 20 ft tree casts a 35 ft shadow. What is the sun’s elevation?

In 1973, my electronics teacher at the High School Industry center (auto shop, electronics, drafting, office work, house building, etc) got the first HP calculator in the school district for $600, It added, subtracted, multiplied, and divided, with red led style display. You can get the same power today in a cheap dollar store calculator. I need to add, it was truly a marvel as he competed against the best of us using our slide-rules, we never had a chance.
I thought that the question asked for the sun’s elevation but the answer was an angle

Yes. He should have asked for the 'angle' of elevation in the question. As it is he is asking for the height of the sun.

This guy is a pretty horrid mathematician, but I keep looking at his vids to see what he got wrong this time. So, he's a pretty brilliant youtuber.

@@keninnewmexico8763made basically the same comment myself in a couple of other videos, but way less succinctly... 😅
I really enjoy your videos and wish I could have had you teach trig when I went to high school during the Lincoln administration. I must have tuned out for most of it, although I enjoyed the other math classes that I had. I've still got a couple of slide rules that I used back in college. Texas Instruments calculators were just coming out but were too expensive for most college students, including me.
Fun fact, the unit of feet were based off the length of Henry 1st of England's foot length.
29.745 degrees, or as another comment already said, 30-60-90 triangle, rounded.
Greetings. The answer Tan theta =20/35. We are assuming that the angel of elevation is Theta. Now for the solution, we have Tan Theta =20/35 =.5714286, and Theta=29.74 degrees. The answer is 29.7 degrees, rounded.
About 147-152 million km depending on the time of year.
I dont know i am a vampire .When suns out i seek shade and air conditioning .
Pyth. Theo. shows a 30-60-90 Rt tri - got 30, great prob. thanks.
I’d much rather see a video about what tangent is and how to find it myself than a calculator tutorial..
I’m an old guy and it’s been ages since I last sat in math class. I tried to solve this and came up with a result greater than 45 degrees. Of course I knew that was wrong but took me a while to realize I had hit arccos instead of arctan. Tried again and got about 29.75
"What is the Sun's ANGLE of elevation."
Up ?
Keep it up. Love your videos. You've taught me tons. Thank you!
20' tall tree with 35' long shadow. The Tan of the angle giving elevation is 20/35 or .5714. According to the tangent table that's just under 30 degrees. A calculator gave me 29.744 or thereabouts.
I had to use a slide rule years ago. It was hell. Even the simplest ti 4 function calculator was a boon. My gosh, I feel old as dirt.
We were taught that the easy way to remember the trig equations were car (cah) breaks down so (soh) tow her (toa )

Boston, perhaps?
Elevation about 92.18 million miles from earth.
The sun’s elevation is approximately 93 million miles
The answer is one astronomical unit, or 92,955,807.3 miles. Done.

Orbit is elliptical, so it varies about 3% over the year.
29.74°
Elevation = 29.744 deg.
29.75 dgs
This question is phrased poorly.
93 million miles.

The sun's elevation is 93 million miles above the surface of the earth.😃
Elevation is not angle! Your videos repeatedly ask a question for which you want another answer!
The sun is way the heck out there......and knowing these other two measures, what is the point?🤡
John, you are the one who constantly tells people to use their head, rather than a calculator....and, in 22 minutes you did not tell how to calculate an angle if you know its tangent. Obviously, it can be done w/o a calculator.
The earth is curved. Are you serious??????
