I was trying to explain to my wife why I love this channel. I couldn’t! It’s a bloke wandering around industrial areas looking for his ferry port or stuffing his face with a buffet breakfast or discussing public transport on the Faroe Islands. Sounds boring but it really isn’t. Many thanks, Steve.

I know I'm maybe a bit late, but I'll just clarify about the announcement at 16.06. Basically, the ship has a very short turnaround time in Bergen, only around 1 hour. Therefore, people have to check out of their cabins a couple of hours in advance, so the crew has time to clean the cabins before the next passengers

Best video I've seen from you so far. Thank you. Norway is paradise even when it's rainy. The ferry was majestic and believe me better than a cruise ship.

My grandfather immigrated to America from Norway just before the turn of the 20th century. He was born on the island of Senja in Norway. He died in 1945. He became a Baptist minister, and was a circuit preacher in Tripp county South Dakota before South Dakota was even a state. He and his father (and the rest of the family) moved out to the Pacific Northwest. Both of them are buried in a cemetery in Portland Oregon. I have this yearning to go to Norway and spend a lot of time there looking around where he was born and just getting to know the country of my ancestors. I really appreciate this post.

Senja is perhaps one of the most beautiful parts of the country. Quite a distance away from Bergen geographically and culturally.

When you said you didn't have anything to eat or you hadn't bought anything all I could do was smile and shake my head. You do realize this is not the first time you've traveled aboard Ferry on the Sunday? I'm glad you finally got some food it looks delicious. And of all ferry's, although there aren't a whole lot, that I've been on with you, I like this one the best. Thank you so much for the work you do to bring these videos to us. Say hi to Alicia. welcome to Norway and my country. typical western weather you had. Bergen and Stavanger are two beautiful cities. You should have tried the coastal route Hurtigruten, which operates between Bergen and Kirkens, as far north as you can get on mainland Norway. great trip but expensive, maybe once with Alicja 🙃 hope you had a nice stay here in Norway. Hurtigruten is not cheap but the scenery only gets better as you go further North. It's worth it for a special trip.

It looks amazing. Some of the tours are actually pretty reasonable. Any night on board saves you $150 in hotel bookings and they include meals which in European capitals is not going to leave much change from $100 a day. Some of the tours include flights from Australia and compare well with 2 weeks in the Whitsundays.

Did this more than fifty years ago from North shields. The North Sea was cruel to us! Loved Norway, but soooooo expensive. Thanks for taking us along and jogging my memory.

Yes, years ago I did that trip from Shields to Bergen. Fantastic!

We're also on the same ferry as you, and the classic cars at the end are two of ours, we're five in total on our way home to Bergen from a Classic VW meet in Denmark. These two are a black VW Karmann Ghia convertible and a VW Type3 Variant or Squareback. It's the shortest drive to any VW meet we're going to. Just a 15 to 30 minutes drive in Bergen to the ferry, and 45 minutes in Denmark... Anyway, a nice video! Thank You!!!

We did this trip a couple of times starting at North Shields. Back then it left North Shields at 3pm on a Wednesday arrived AM in Stavanger and travelled to Bergen in daylight. We stayed overnight at Bergen and retraced our Journey back to North Shields arriving back Saturday. Very relaxing until you join the North Sea in a swell.

The ex and I took the car to Bergen and upwards to Sognafyord back in 2001. We boarded the large ferry at Aberdeen if I recall correctly. It was the best holiday and best company ever. Sadly that ferry stopped because of higher spec legislation. Otherwise I'd be doing it again for sure.

You do have luck with the weather, in the end it was fabulous with the clouds just over the trees and all the multi coloured homes along the shore. What a gorgeous video, the ferry was fantastic as well. Looking forward to the comparison next week. Another Steve Marsh winner. ❤

Cheers Scott! Seriously mate, the region makes for and easy filming trip. The scenery does the hard work and everyone seems more than happy to welcome KZreadrs! I was in the Canning Museum in Stavanger, and when the guy realised I was making videos for KZread, he cranked the machine on for me to film it. I found Norway to be the country where 'have a nice day' is said with genuine sincerity. It's expensive, but worth the supplement! :)

Ah, beautiful Norway! A country that never ceases to amaze, and seems to be stunning in all weathers. I've taken some of my best photos in Norway. I've yet to visit Bergen though, although it's still on my list. But an added bonus for me though Steve is that those helicopters you showed belong to the company I work for, so cheers for that mate! 😊

@@xvsupremacy7190 DFDS in 2007-8, before that is was Fjordline. Fjordline was excellent with fantastic food, went seriously downhill with DFDS and then they stopped in 2008 with too high tax on the fuel.

Yes, I have been to Bergen, LOVED it. That was on the Hurtigruten ferry, To Kirkened past North Cape, never to be forgotten.

Hi Steve! Thanks again for an excellent video👍 Yes, more than 10 years ago I sailed with Hurtigruten's old "Lofoten" from Kirkernes to Bergen. It was from the early 60s, and is now a Maritime school ship in Stavanger.

I have made this computation on others of your videos -- yes, as a subscriber: Steve + the seemingly mundane= inexplicably interesting.

That really does look like a superb trip and the ferry is definitely up to snuff. Once again a splendid Saturday treat. Norway always looks to be worth a trip.

Amazing! Norway looks very beautiful! The views & scenery from this awesome ship are so beautiful & dramatic! The ship itself is outstanding, including the decor, the cleanliness & the design of the ship. I also loved the trees, greenery & foliage around the Restaurants & other areas within the ship. That was so unique as well. Not to mention the delicious looking food at the Buffet. All of this, along with your making shadow puppets on the wall at the Hotel..LOL & your quirky & funny remarks at times, made this whole voyage totally unique & thoroughly enjoyable! Thank you for sharing this delightful experience!

I absolutely love Norway, it's my favourite country. Bergen is great, especially the Bryggen (Hanseatic Wharf), the fish market, and the funicular up Mount Fløyen. Would love to do the trip from Stavanger to Bergen one day too. Oslo is a great place too.

The narrow sound in the middle of the video is where the name "Northern Way" comes from - as it is the only route north by sea that avoids the open sea. It is also where the original capitol of the united nation was situated - at those small islands at the very narrowest point.

Marsh well prepared as ever, sometimes you hate the automatic snack machines, but sometimes they are a godsend, I think the best views were the bridges and the helicopters. I hope you had time to try the funicular. Enjoyable trip. Thanks Steve

I had to laugh at your " nothing to eat " dilemma; when my kids were small I got into the habit of carrying a flapjack type of bar in my handbag in case of emergency..to this day,, I always have something similar with me in the car in case of emergency! When I had to ring a breakdown service a few years ago, I produced said flapjack when the pickup truck arrived and shared it with the driver. It was a wet, misty day and that shared bar was a veritable feast! Another lovely video, thank you Steve.

Great Video as usual Steve. Been to Bergen a few times and to be honest it does often make Scottish weather look fine and settled ! Hopefully it improved for you. I can highly recommend the Hurtigruten costal trips - they are primarily carrying supplies to communities along the coast of Norway so you are never short of something to see as they make various stops where they load/unload and some of the stops are long enough to disembark for a short time. The scenery is truly spectacular. We went from Tromso to Kirkenes at the tip of Norway on the border with Russia on a quest to see the Northern Lights - very funny when the Captain announced over the tannoy a sighting of the Northern Lights and the dining room emptied mid meal ! It’s certainly worth thinking about what season to go as I can vouch for the fact the seas can get very rough even though the ship is still generally hugging the coastline- maybe a summer trip to see the “midnight sun” ? A further consideration is the cost - very pricy but on the plus side I think you could record enough footage for several u tube videos !

OK, can we talk about the yellow house at 19:15 for a sec? 🤣 I visited Bergen for a couple of days for the first time last October. Absolutely loved it. I hiked up to the top of Fløyen and the views were stunning (Yes, I got the train back down bc I'm not *that* stupid.). Listened to Aurora the whole time obvs because Norway and haunting soundtracks. It looked like it was about to rain hard the whole time I was there, but it never actually did lol. One silly thing I loved was the blankets they provide on the outdoor seats at the coffee shops! I then got the train to Oslo. It was not awful. Great stuff, cheers. Looking forward to next week's installment!

Did the same this April, hiked up, but took the train down. It was a very sunny day when I did, warmer than it is today in Brussels. It was my second attempt, first time, I stranded at Skansemyren. This time, I was walking with 2 elderly ladies and I couldn't let them beat me :p

I took this route around Christmas in 1988 from Bergen to Hirshtals. All I remember I is the horrible seas and drunks in the bar. The newer ferry looks beautiful. I’ll be back in Bergen next week. I hope the rain let’s up! Thanks for the beautiful views and info.

Nice video. Never been on the ferry between Stavanger(Tananger) and Bergen. 2 places where you need to be lucky with the weather (especially Bergen, the city with most rain in northern europe) Still like both Stavanger and Bergen. 2 very nice cities when it isn't raining. Nice old houses in some parts of the cities, lovely views of the fjord if you know where to go and other places to see as wellnif you stay long enough. See you are going to Stavanger in next video. Hope you went to preikestolen/pulpit rock even if it would be a full day to do it (and easier if you have a car). I used to live in Stavanger and Sandnes.

I remember when the VW was a relatively common sight, but I don't think the Karmann Ghia was ever common on this side of the Atlantic.

Yes, as someone said, a Squareback in the USA. I drove ours from Los Angeles to San Francisco long time ago.

They most likely had to vacate their cabins when you heard the announcement.

Norway looks stunning and the clouds and rain only improved it in my opinion. I just disembarked the Grand Princess last Saturday after spending a week through Alaska’s inside passage and I have to say, your ferry was much, much fancier! (Although in fairness, she was built in 1998). Were there not enough places to sit and not buy a drink though? All those people sitting on the floor is why I’m asking. As always, I thoroughly enjoyed this video. You’re my best resource for future travel plans as I also love a good ferry.

You've got to do Alaska!!! I have been by cruise ship but also by ferry from Bellingham, Washington, a very unique experience. Scenery is gorgeous, but having just done a fjords cruise, I think Norway is the best!

@@janicehemen4203 I JUST found out about that ferry and totally would have done that, if I'd known. But I live in the Chihuahua desert where it's been absurdly hot, was lying on the couch watching people stare at glaciers and thought, oh that looks better than this, how much is it I wonder? Turns out if you book 7 days out and get an obstructed view cabin, quite doable! And Alaska is my points airline so getting to Anchorage was free. Different situation than Steve and Alicja who would spend an arm and a leg just to get to Alaska or Vancouver (or Seattle). I just spent all my time out on deck. But Steve if you're checking in, Icelandair sometimes has a cheap fare Glasgow -Reykjavik -Seattle. And there are cruises that leave out of Seattle. Bellingham where the ferry leaves from would be about three hours north on a bus or the train. (Check those Seattle cruises though and make sure they're taking the inside passage and not the Pacific route.) The cruises out of Vancouver, BC all take the Inside Passage.

I've learned to always pack a ziplock bag or two of muesli or trailmix after hungry nights for similar reasons;)

Bergen is the most beautiful town/city in Norway. It is far more prettier than Oslo. Stavanger is..... oil. For some reason, Oban reminded me of Bergen the first time I visited Oban 27 years ago. Maybe I am barking mad or I had too much of that Oban single malt. Or was I barking mad ? Great video !! We need to restore the ferry between Newcastle and Bergen. Btw I have had two ex-workmates moving back from Glasgow to Bergen because it was far too much more rain in Glasgow/Greenock than Bergen.....

Bergen actually has roughly 1.75x the annual precipitation of Glasgow, but only ~30 more annual rainy days on average. The "winners" vary from one year to another, but Bergen always competes in the top 5 for most annual rainfall and most rain days in European cities each year, sometimes winning one or both categories. May and June are usually the dryest months if you decide to give Norway another go, this was pretty unfortunate. Would recommend going further north though. The west coast is pretty, but it gets absolutely stunning further north :)

I really enjoy your ferry videos. That was a really nice ship, and what a breakfast buffet! I visited Bergen many moons ago. Take the ferry from Helsinki to Stockholm. The last few hours navigating from the Baltic through the Stockholm Archepelago is stunning.

That ferry WILL happen one day! I've been very close, but often the problem for me is flights, good deals haven't yet lined up to enable me to do the crossing (which itself is incredible value)

I live in Haugesund and I often drive across the Karmsund Bridge while that ship sails underneath. Nice ship and a nice video! ❤

Have been to Norway a couple of times, and three times to Bergen, the first time was 13 years ago, it was March, I had arrived by train from Oslo (still one of my best train rides ever, didn't like Oslo back then, though, sludge, a hostel room shared with smoking French tourists...), stayed right in the city centre's YMCA, and had a blast. Went up the Fløibanen, but it was chilly, drizzling and the cafe was closed, but what a view. Then I took this very ferry to Hirtshals, the Bergensfjord, it was magic, quite an expensive cabin, though. Second time in Norway, I didn't go to Bergen, in stead I visited friends in Oslo, made a trip to Trondheim (loved it, what a beautiful cathedral), but stayed mostly in and around Oslo. It was late August, and this time, the city made a much better impression on me. Took the Bergensfjord from Langesund to Hirstshals again (they make a return trip from Hirtshals in the day). Third time was 5 years ago, late Summer, made the trip in reverse. I arrived from Hirtshals (on Bergensfjord again), quite a nice day, walked through the city, tried walking up the Fløien this time, but stranded a little over halfway and returned from an intermediate station. Walked over the Nordnes peninsula to the Aquarium, stayed in a small village and in Voss for 2 nights, then took the Bergensbanen for a second time, this time to Norway. I also took the Flåmsbanen, absolutely spectacular (albeit a bit expensive). Flåm is a hole, though, there's an outlet shop with cafe, a hotel, a cute little church and a few houses, and that's it. If one of those gigantic cruise ships is moored, the town is literally crushed by it. And last time was this April, this time, it was a group trip, this time, and some things went not quite like planned. The Monday before our planned departure on Thursday from Eemshaven, the ferry company informed us that the sailing was cancelled. We had to scramble to find an alternative, finally went by train to Aarhus, spent the night, and went with Colorline (their terminal is much closer to the train station in Hirtshals) to Kristiansand. Had to take almost immediately upon arrival a train to Stavanger, so not much sightseeing in Kristiansand, unfortunately. In Stavanger, we did have a nice evening walk in the beautiful Old Stavanger and around Valberget. Next day, we took one of those long-distance buses that take the E39, a spectacular road with tunnels, bridges, and 2 ferry rides. I'm not the biggest bus person, but it was comfortable, and what a ride! We arrived around 3 in the afternoon, beautiful weather (it was warmer than it is today in Brussels, to be honest, and it's supposedly Summer right now), and this time, I went for it, up the Fløien, started very energetic to catch up with two elderly ladies of our group who had left a few minutes ago, but quickly lost steam. With a few pauses, I did make it, and I am still proud of that achievement. We stayed 2 days in Bergen, so the day after, we visited Fantoft Stavkirke, quite a spectacular building, but unfortunately, as it was still not high season it was closed. Also made some rounds on the Bergen tram, it's quite a trip. Next day, we left Bergen for Oslo. Still early Spring, so lots of snow, and again, a spectacular ride! Getting something to eat from the cafe car (and a beer, they have a beer specially made for them called Dresin, a cloudy pale ale), then stayed in a hotel in the main station. After a few days riding trams, the Oslo metro etc, we took a ferry from Oslo to Kiel, Colorline again, and speaking of cruise ferries, that's the most luxurious ferry I've ever been on (not entirely my taste, I like it a little less in-your-face, but still great to have experienced it.) After another long day on the train, we arrived back home, but what a trip. I love Norway, wish I could afford it more often!

Hello again ; Fond memories are re awakening. 1959 saw me sailing from Newcastle on Tyne to Bergen, up the fenicular, train to Voss, Gudvangen, Balestrand, and back dow the Sogn fjiord to Bergen. So enjoying these vidios. Well done again.

Love your videos. Loved Bergen. Highly recommend going up the funicular and getting in some good walks. If you're there for a bit go get the Gundvagen to Flam ferry.

I've been to Bergen a couple of times as i have family there. The first time I flew into Oslo and the got the train to Bergen. It was about 7hrs on the train and it was a lovely bright day so saw lots of beautiful scenery. Bergen is a beautiful city and both times I've visited has been amazing weather. I also went on a trip down the fjords from Bergen which was about 3hrs round trip, that was amazing too. Such spectacular scenery and so different from the UK. I cant wait to go back again 😊 thank you for sharing your videos, we love watching them! 😊

I made the trip to Bergen from Lerwick in the late 90s. The return trip was the roughest sea crossing I've ever made. Great trip otherwise. The train journey from Bergen to Oslo is spectacular.

Your talents as a shadow puppeteer are highly underutilized. I think you missed your true calling..LOL About 80% sure my next trip is going to be in Scandanavia somewhere..Always had a hankering to go there.. Amazingly beautiful, Steve..LIKED 👍 as always!

Hi Steve, we were actually in Bergen when you sailed in. We were on the Viking Cruise ship shown in the background at the end of your video. We were there for three days and it rained hard every day. We are now in the Lofoten Islands and heading for Thomson.

Forgive the typo at the end of my comment. We are heading fro Tromso not Thomson. We are currently in Leknes and the scenery’s amazing. Quite similar to your recent video of the Faroe Islands

Yes and I was going to say that the weather while I was in Bergen wasn't raining raining raining. And I remember the people wearing the very colourful rain suits on the street in the rain really quite beautiful

Hi Steve ✌🏻! A rather late answer to your question about those 2 beautiful old cars! They are a „Karmann Ghia Convertible“ series 1 and the other one is a VW 1500 (or 1600 cc) Variant (Station Wagon or Kombiwagen {shortcut = Kombi} in german terms! Both originated in the 60ˋs. Karmann, formally situated in the Lower-Saxony town of Osnabrück (before the unfortunately went bankrupt), was a long term technical developer and bodybuilding company for VW and the Coupè on which the convertible is based, was designed by the famous Italian Design Company Ghia, who also worked for Ford and other big names among automobile manufacturers!
