His criticisms aren't that specific, and while I normally tend to agree with him, this review is mostly just him repeating his point of view regarding a single topic (overblown absurdity), without really saying anything else about the cinematography, acting, or soundtrack just to name a few.

I actually loved this film. I know 4th wall-breaking sarcasm can get a bit tired, but I thought The Suicide Squad was perfectly made. They cared so little about the characters, couldn't give less of a f*ck about any story, and then made the main antagonist so unbelievably riciculous in both scale and concept that none of it is taken seriously. It was way too violent and gory to make any sense, but that gave it a unique charm.

It’s definitely one of, if not the, best DCEU film. The Suicide Squad is a ridiculous ensemble, a bit like Guardians of the Galaxy (although this is far more bloody!) so James Gunn is the natural choice for writer/director. I can see why some people wouldn’t enjoy this - it doesn’t shy away from absurdity, in fact in parts it relishes it. If you don’t like that, you won’t like the film. I would say that thematically and emotionally it is the most consistent DCEU film (most previous DCEU films throw their themes away in act 3). I hope this film is a sign of the DC universe finally starting to find its feet.

Aquaman is a good Saturday morning kids movie. And when watched in that way it works. Shazam I enjoyed, and was surprised by. The problem is too many DCEU films are hit-and-miss. I’m hoping that bringing in directors/writers that have experience of continuing film series will strengthen their universe.

We know who the Suicide Squad is, they tried how many times already in the last few years to get this and Harley Quinn off the ground. The first was an intriguing take on an old story, they flopped it so badly and have desperately been trying to course correct with yet more poor attempts. It was obvious after a few minutes that the movie wasn't going to take itself seriously (which was good) but it also abandoned dramatic tension, so the jokes and gags became predictable. Every orchestral swell, every tense scene, took me out of the moment because I would go looking for the thing that was going to "subvert my expectation".

I think I agree to an extent, at least in the sense that it's really hard to balance the two. Most of my favourite superhero movies are either "serious" (Logan, The Dark Knight, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, etc.) or "silly" (Thor: Ragnarok, the Deadpool films, Kick-Ass, etc.).

I agree there's nothing wrong with silly or serious cbms. It's just a shame there aren't that many of the latter, and that using sincerity and earnestness to reference the subject matter is being lost in a homogeneous glut of action comedies. I don't think I've ever seen a genre as limited in tone as the modern cbm. Shame, as it's based on such rich and varied lore.

I don't pretend to be a comic book expert because I'm not, but I enjoy most comic book type movies! I liked it and I'd probably sit through it again but just not in a great rush. It might sound an odd criticism but was it a film that needed a heart and soul? Trim a fee minutes, focus more on the anarchic madness and humour and it might have been a better film. That being said I think Thor Ragnarok managed to be over the top silly and keep a heart and soul at the centre and for my money hit more high notes. The Suicide Squad despite a lot of good scenes didn't quite hold together as well for me and it dragged in places despite no shortage of big scenes.

It is better in many ways, end villain is a bit better. Same Slipknot problem & not really knowing the characters before, or after in some cases. Did like that IE did have some epic I could be Superman moments. Mom jokes were funny & HQ didn't take over, still had Mr J issues. Maybe a Justice League Dark would be easier for DC, after these movies the classic part is members die. You built up over many movies for an Avenger, in this well very little happens.
