We should have more history content on the kingdoms of Syria and Assyria in the First Temple period and their influences on the S. Levant.

So let me stop here. The problem with Ashurbanipal was not just he wasn't the oldest son, but that the oldest son was on the throne of babylon. The Assyrian empire was the greatest empire on Earth that thrice tried to commit suicide, and thrice saved itself. Ashurbanipal would be the last savior. Leading into this twice the throne of babylon was ceded to a son, and twice it lead to civil war. Ladies of the king would conspire to make sure the son of another consort would get the throne, as a consequence you have poisonings, murders, etc. And so, in order to ensure that you didnt get entangled in the bloody messiness of Assyrian royal family succession everyone got on board in order to make sure that the royal seat of Asshur was actually in Assyria. Unfortunately after Ashuribanipal defeated his brother, the empire began to wither and by the time of his death it did not have the precense to fight off his various enemies.

None of that is on-topic for the discussion. It's a different set of rabbit holes.

@@baarbacoa But incredibly important for understanding the chaos from 620 to 586 BCE. I mean if we want to understand anointment we also need to look at the post collapse syro-anatolian city states and the relative proximity of the polities to assyria at the time. Assyria was barely more than the greater of equals, it rose to power borrowing alot of hittite ideas simply by encorperating "conquered" parts of the neohittite empire. If I recall correctly assyria went into help an ally solve a border dispute deep in anatolia and turned around with several states on the way back swearing loyalty to assyria. I mean its not like they had really planned out how they were going to control. The biggest effort of the Neoassyrian empire was to rid themselves or aramaic tribesmen occupying cities in the previous assyrian territory. One of the tactic they used was to greatly inflate the damage they did to their enemies so as to win a war before it was even declared. And BTW, those assyrian governers, alot of them are family members, so its not like they had no involvement in the dysfunctional family politics.
