I would add, the tung oil finish feels and grips very nicely in the hand.

I just received my pure hickory heart cane with tung oil only and I can attest to its beauty and finish. I am so glad I did not add a stain as the natural wood grain is exquisite. It is surprisingly light in weight as well.

I’ve always used boiled linseed on my cane. I got a few expensive ‘hardwoods’ canes on the internet and one of them broke almost immediately. I’m going to try get ash or hickory for my next cane. If it’s good enough for my old hammers and chisels, it’s good enough for me. I’m in England so hickory isn’t a standard material here like it is in the USA. I’ve looked at tung oil before but it seemed too expensive now that I can’t do any woodwork anymore. I’ve got litres of clear linseed and some yellow boiled linseed left. Stripping off whatever my cane was coated in from India was awful. I’ve even fixed a cracked cane with some fine miliput once too. I have a lot of walking canes. If anyone wants to send me a hickory self defence cane, I wouldn’t say no. 😁

I bought a fighting cane and DVDs years ago. I get boutes of vertigo and need a little help once in awhile. I honestly don't remember who presented the course. My cane doesn't have finger grooves in the angled cut part. I've used my cane to discourage overly aggressive "friendly" dogs without killing them. It is a plain Jane. Hickory, I believe. I've thought about redoing the finish. #OO steel wool and a light sealing of tung oil. Would you recommend anything else ? Thank you from a subscriber.
