The Student Experience - Edinburgh Veterinary School

What is it like to be a veterinary student at the University of Edinburgh?
Follow current students around the campus and the city to see what they like to do in their spare time, what extra-curricular activities they are involved in, what classes they like, how they are taught and what travel and work opportunities are open to them during their studies.

Hi im currently in year 11 sitting my gcses but due to corona my grades are not as high as i would like them to be. If i got a 6 in gcse combined science and then an A in Alevel biology and chemistry is that still accepted? i also plan on taking a gap year after year 13 so i can volunteer in places where animals are present as i have not had much opportunity due to covid.

Hi Anya, That’s great to hear! We don’t have a specific number of days that we ask for candidates, as we know that everyone is different and has the chance to do different things. We ask generally that you try to get a broad set of experiences, getting a real idea of the profession, which might include seeing veterinary practice in small and large animals, livestock farms, zoos, kennels, catteries, wildlife centres, pig farms, animal charities and more! We’ve got a page on our website (www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/undergraduate/bvms/5-year-programme/non-academic-requirements which we keep up to date with all this info. So keep working hard, concentrate on your science subjects and get whatever experience with animals that is possible and most importantly that you enjoy. Have fun, see as much as you can and when you make your choices, please get in touch, come see us at an open day, try some of our free online courses (www.ed.ac.uk/vet/studying/moocs-overview) and speak to our admissions team, so they can help guide you to applying with the strongest application possible! Good luck and if you have any questions, the please do get in touch.
