The Street (2014) | Episode 1 | BBC Scotland

The Street (2014) - Episode 1 - BBC Scotland
The Street follows a year in the lives of the people who live, work and play on Sauchiehall Street, one of Scotland's most famous and iconic shopping and party destinations. From shopkeepers struggling to pay the rent to buskers, revellers, street pastors, bar workers and psychics, the street never sleeps.
In the first programme, Savoy Centre manager Jim decides to put a cunning new plan into action but ends up with a mutiny on his hands, chef Nick puts a trainee through the mill and the street pastors are out in force mopping up the aftermath of a busy weekend's partying.

Over the last 10 years Glasgow City Council has destroyed Sauchiehall Street and you’ll be lucky to see anything or anyone here. What a mess has been allowed to be made of this area. Also amazing to see Mellow - used to jam with him in the early 2000s and learned a lot of reggae guitar licks from this man.. sadly not seen him for many years.

I worked in Sauchiehall street soon after leaving school in the 70's... it was the most exiting place in the city centre. ..followed only by Argyle street. We'd go dancing at weekends , and walk along Sauchiehall street towards Anderston.. at 2am, and buy hot rolls in a bakery in St Vincent street just hot out of the oven . Fabulous memories . I haven't lived in Scotland for decades. I was hoping to go and visit Glasgow central this summer. Sounds like I'll be wasting the plane fare. So sad.

thanks to u for uploading this, very interesting documentary. remember it was on when I lived in glasgow and watched it again over weekend, sad to say back then it actually was more thriving than what I see now. come back to GLASGOW for football only and get first flight back. no interest in pubs anymore after the matches. just down in Suffolk now and while its not perfect, different world from glasgow the boy from school Kevin is so frustrating - can tell he needs motivation but looks like he would rather be at home comfortable making tea and sitting in front of TV. I know from my days at work experience at network rail and then leading to my first job doing what I now do as a railway infrastructure manager it is all about attitude. I wonder if the chap Kevin managed to succeed - does any one know Tom

Nick (the manager / head chef at Taste) is a prime example of why 'coke' is one of the worst drugs people can take. It rips out any real good that people have inside them and turns people into short tempered, stressed out narcissists who lack real emapthy for others. And that effect can last years upon years after people stop taking it. Even Lemmy from Motorhead confirms this in a number of interviews he did , and he had been around all sorts of drugs all through his adult life. He warns that coke is the worst and most destructive drug out there. Shame about the young lad Kevin as all he needed was someone with a bit of empathy to help train him up and help encourage him with a bit of understanding that he was new to it all. Instead he was clearly made to be nervous and then demotivated due to the horrendous ,short tempered , bullying attitude he got from Nick. It's a classic example too af why 'the carrot works far better then the stick' when trying to motivate people and get the best out of them. At least Kevin got away from that horrendous bad attitude Nick was giving him, fairly quickly. It no doubt made it harder for Kevin to trust future work situations , but hopefully his next job attempt, he was treated with human levels of empathy and understanding , instead of the horrendous bullying attitude of an ex coke head.

Nick was a grafter. Kevin was a product of a lazy and workshy family. Look at his mum. Slobbed on a couch and about 25 stone. Kitchen/Chef work is hard. It is tough. He should never have taken the boy Kevin on at all. You could tell just by looking at him he came from a family not prepared to work for a living and wanted everything handed to him. Nick was not perfect but he gave a fuck and had ambitions about his business succeeding. Imagine being under all that pressure to do well and hiring a total doughball who just stood about and was not willing to put in a shift. You’d lose the nut too.

Hear hear. You've just summarised how I felt watching the restaurant segments in better terms than I could have. I've worked under managers, business owners like him before and it was genuinely upsetting to see another lad go through an experience that could be mapped onto my own. Those types of jobs genuinely make you dread turning up to work and make your life overall less worth living. You're just tense all the time. The common thread when I worked those jobs was that the businesses were always completely hanging by a thread/fly-by-night operations where the owners were absolutely winging it and there was no structure or protocol in place. Also ignore the clown who replied to you initially. He's already tried picking a fight with me for calling the owner a bully. I'm roughly 90-95% sure it might be Nick himself, or someone who's close to him in reality.

I don’t get it. You’ve got nowhere to stay but you’ve got enough money to sit in a pub all day drinking? There’s life strategies seems to be their worst enemy. I’d be walking into every takeaway restaurant and office and asking for work. Washing dishes putting out the bins hoovering the floors. Or with the basking money buy a bucket window cleaner and towels and go around every business offering to clean their shop windows for a fiver. I wouldn’t be sitting in a pub spending my last penny on alcohol.

This guy doesn't claim benefits like the thousands of layabouts in Scotland whose only contribution to society is claiming as many benefits as they can without the slightest interest in getting a job.

Retail died in the nineties when we had access the the crap that these small retails reselling us from their suppliers in China. They should have kept their eye on the ball. Progress. A bit like the mines shutting down when the UK started buying coal from other countries at 1/6 of the price then the miners wanted more money? Well done unions, got them all shut down

@@ralphcifaretto1 Except they're making rolls with square sausage, not working in a Michelin star restaurant. The "waste of space" as you so put it did one thing wrong, and his boss went off on a "Fuck this that and the next thing" rant. That's not a good manager that's an insecure bastard who can't run a business. Kev got fuck-all training, was probably not even getting paid if it was work experience, and was expected to read this wall-punchers mind. It's an incredibly huge tell that his main motivation is "Get the work done as quickly as possible so we can get out of this shit hole." Again, that's an indictment of you as a business owner if you're admitting the place you run is miserable and all the staff can't wait to get out the door. And please don't feed me the entire" I'm a solid nutcase for working in a restaurant." angle because I have heard it before, multiple times. It's high pressure and stressful but that's no excuse to mistrain your staff and use them as a kicking post because of your own shortfallings in life. It doesn't have to be this depressing if the business ownership is correct. If you want to take dog's abuse from your boss for less-than-minimum wage, and you think there's something noble in that that's your choice. I'm sure all that bootlicking will pay off in the long run, eh?
