This film had two perspectives: The mother and the foundlings ( I used this word, as orphans lose their parents due to death). The mother: wanted what she considered a better lifestyle (away from struggle, chaos, stress and poverty...anything to do with people of colour/urban). To the extent of abandoned her children. The Foundlings: attempted to find and seek answers from their birth mother and be a part of her life now, only to find that she still does not want anything to do with them, again (a hard pill to swallow, to not be wanted/acknowledged and even loved by their mother). In the end, when given a chance to choose her children and be there she still choose herself (and abandoned all of her children). This movie gets 5 stars from Me.

Thank you, @Descendant. This movie was excellent. There was a lot to unpack and the ambiguity was palpable. I see the film getting a lot of undeserved hate in comments sections or on IMDB from people who probably don't care for the ideas that it presents (just like they do with actual Monkey Paw productions). The story and acting are compelling AF, it's shot beautifully. It's telling when folks aren't specific in their criticisms. There are likely rough edges, given that the film is a first for the director and its association with Netflix, but that's not what people mean who are calling the entire film "trash." Those trolls simply don't see with white people in the film for their tastes.

@@gaila.9852 And I have no idea why you’re letting Neve/Cheryl off the hook. Your comment doesn’t hold her accountable for anything she did including abandoning Marvin and Abigail. Were they not innocent “blameless” children when she first abandoned them??? Do you not understand that Neve/Cheryl ruined Marvin and Abigail lives and their actions were the direct result of their mother’s abandonment? Then she CHOSE to abandon her younger children again showing that woman had no heart whatsoever. She wasn’t capable of loving anyone not her first set of kids or the last set. She stuffed her purse with all her jewelry and was out lol. She could have stayed and faced the music but instead she dipped out AGAIN. At the end of the day, Marvin & Abigail only wanted a mother. Its a domino effect of events all started when Neve/Cheryl abandoned her children all those years ago. It’s unfortunate you can’t see who the real villain of the movie is and you want to blame the poor children she abandoned and destroyed.

I enjoyed this psychological thriller. It's very interesting to say the least. The whole time, I thought she was just a black woman running away from her blackness when in short, she was mentally ill and just running away. The script was written beautifully, especially when her children or the strays started resembling her psychosis imo because they were disconnected with reality. Wow, great movie 🎬 👍👌

First of all, I just watched the movie. Gotta say I'm a huge horror/thriller fan and watched hundres of movies in this category but honestly, it was extremely CRINGE AND BAD. From a cinema perspective it may be good but as someone watching the movie to actually enjoy it was BAD. You can ask why, well let me tell you. THE ENDING OH MY FKIN GOD. (SPOILERS NEXT SENTENCE). You wait 1.30 hours for something to happen and then the wife just fkin walks out and leaves the house and then, the credits. You are like WHAT THE HELL, DID THE MOVIE JUST FINISH? Well yes it did indeed. And guess what? It happened just when we actually saw some tiny bit of action happening SINCE WE WAITED ALL MOVIE TO HAPPEN BECAUSE IT BUILD UP FOR 1.30 HOURS. I can already hear some people saying "its about the thrill you get while you are watching the movie/ it's psychologically very deep/ the ending has a deep meaning BLABLABLA". It might be psychologically deep but then again we are not fkin watching a documentary about Sokrates. Maybe for people who never watch thrillers it may be alright/or "a piece of art", but as a regular thriller movie watcher, THE ENDING SUCKED AND I WOULD GET MORE THRILL BY WATCHING FKIN MR BEAN GOING ON A HOLIDAY AND ACCIDENTLY RECORDING WITH HIS FRONT CAMERA ALL THE TRIP.

The problem starts here, the mannerisms , behaviour the director gives the black children character is so stereotypical vs the coloured children , Abigail and Marvin as uneducated and unable to make anything productive out of themselves , rude and violent as per usual . Abigail was depicted slow for her age , and Marvin was shown as a bad influence to Sebastian influencing him to smoke cigarettes and drugs and violently attack a schoolmate , and towards the end the only way they could get closure from being abandoned by their mother was to commit more crime (house invasion and murdering her white husband ) this representation is tired and a damaging stereotype , Mary and Sebastian were portrayed to be more soft spoken well mannered and relatively smart for their age (a representation that reinforces the white preference for coloured individuals) . Neve/Cheryl herself was depicted more as a black woman wanting to live beyond her means and would do anything for it (gold digger stereotype) than a woman of color struggling with racial identity and internalised racism which was what the movie intended to portray , so again the failure of which was more harmful than insightful . Speaking of insight , the movie like the tittle strays from the main themes and fails to help viewers understand the social inequalities and injustice for people of color /black people that contribute to self hate , internalised racism which was a reoccurring theme in the movie Not just a flop from social dynamic issues but a gross insult to the community

I didn't get a struggle with race itself, so much as a struggle with poverty that accompanied the race. I think had "Cheryl" received a financial windfall, at the time she was speaking 2 her sister, she would have been perfectly fine from there. I feel her struggle was more a "finance/class/status" 1, & had she meet a wealthy black man, that would have been just as well. She wanted an upscale lifestyle; black, white, blue, green, purple. Her need 2 suppressed her race, IMO, came fr her needing 2 "fit in", & her blackness reminding her of the past. My thing is, why couldn't the character have married a wealthy man of color, & still had the same life? What did the writer(s) hope 2 gain, having the husband white & kids biracial? That's what doesn't sit well with me. Also, for a women as fair skinned/haired as the character was, why were the older kids so dark with really course hair? Those r the parts i had a problem with!

Also you know this show is probably going to be good when the start of the trailer has orchestra music put into it (let's hope what I say ages well that is). Update: IMDb ratings on this movie are low but you can't deny this looked good, just by judging the trailer.

The eldest son was very much understandably angry & resentful towards the mother while the daughter was more hopeful & open-minded to the idea of them reuniting & was deeply hurt when their mother turned them away & acted as if she didn’t know them. I think that they also wanted to be close/have a relationship with their half siblings but were also resentful & jealous of them because they felt as if she replaced them & saw how lavished they were living (the life they should’ve been living). All she gave them was a lousy $20,000 check to not only make up for her absence/abandonment of them, but also for them to go away so that she can continue to live her life with her new family like they never existed as she already has before & to repair her reputation/image for those who know her as neve while her eldest children still/will always know her as cheryl when she left them…I’m guessing that their presence was a trigger/reminder of when she was Cheryl.
