The guard thingy seems like with the holes to mount it to the ax and bashing into the log, it'll just fracture eventually from stress. A full length hand or especially great axe will kill regardless of amount of armour as you well know. For HEMA you simply can’t safely use war axes, maces, hammer or pole arms with full technique. These things however would be amazing in HEMA. Capable of pushing a shield aside or hooking without serious injury risk to you opponent. You could even do dumb movie stuff with them that would work against an opponent who didn’t have much experience with silly movie form like twin fist axes.

I can see it being maybe useful if you want a tool for young kids or people with less mobility/coordination (elderly or disabled) to split small wood with a reduced risk of smashing their fingers (like kindling). I don't know if I would actually be much easier to use than a small hatchet, maybe with a mallet which would also give something like an extra 6 inches of handle to keep your axe hand clear of the timber.

It appears those are made by Müller in Austria, not Germany, although the handle is of American hickory. They are designed for indoor hearthside use for making kindling. As one who has lived several years in several places requiring various sorts of fireplaces for heat and/or hot water or cooking, a specialized little hand axe like this would have been most welcome. Apparently they come in three sizes: for men, ladies and youth. The full name of the firm is the rather ponderously teutonic "Himmelberger Zeughammerwerk Leonhard Müller & Söhne GmbH". Search that and you'll easily find their website with a downloadable PDF of their catalog, albeit in German.

I’m in the same boat as you, I feel like an axe like that would be perfect for the missus to keep by the wood stove to start a small cooking fire but there’s really no practicality outside of that. Maybe splitting up small pieces of fat lighter but might as well just use a decent knife for that

On the boarder with Austria. Here in the Czech republic if you live in the village you 100 percent rely on wood and coal to heat your home/water. You would have this next to the stove for smaller material

By the tent's wood stove, the BBQ/smoker or fire pit for kindling and smaller, uniform pieces without having a handle in the way is exactly what I need. Arexthey still available?? 😀

All the polish people I’ve known they all had little hatchets by their wood stoves. They’d always have odd scrap boards left over from carpentry jobs. They’d cut those boards right down to slivers for starting the fire. This axe would sure come in handy for that.
