Just watched a man talk about a damn axe for 15 mins. and I'm not even a dad yet. My two cents on more words to describe this axe: modest, humble, unassuming, grounded, trusty, unpretentious, reliable, solid, firm, handy, weighty, sturdy, well-built, meticulous, hearty, burly, no-nonsense, direct, simple. I like holding it. I like swinging with it. I like the look of it. I like the feel of it. I like the weight of it. I like everything about it. I like it a lot.

No worry, it's a normal metaphor, you know since a long time men like to use their beloved things as parallel nicknames, For example, a ship's unit is "she" or a mother ship, a tank can be "she", in the motherland can be "she", your beloved Harley-Davidson, your new shiny sports car, or your faithful axe, of course it can be "she" to a man too (laughs)

Love your channel! Great information. I live in Oregon and have learned so much watching you. Also, I purchased this axe when it came back in stock for 23 bucks and I have to say. Everything you mentioned is 100% right. Sturdy and well crafted. I did re edge it like you did and took the varnish off the handle to change it to just some boiled linseed which I like the feel of much better! Thanks for all the info you are the best!

The memory this brought back was helping my grandfather sharpen his axe on whetstone (wetstone?) wheel as I turned the wheel and he ran the axe back & forth to sharpen it. Man. I bought the Trail Boss axe after watching this something like 5 years ago… been swinging it ever since - split wood with it today in fact which brought me back here. I don’t have anywhere near the Gransfors Bruk collection you do, but the mistakes/skills I learned swinging and caring for the Cold Steel have allowed me take better care of my properly nice axes. And with quality in mind, I take care of all my handles and store the axes in the same place through the winter and the Trail Boss is still rock solid whereas I’ve had 2 high end axes get loose. In all, I think this is one of your best recommendations from a shear value standpoint - even at todays price of $29

i know, but i believe that tramontina use 1045 or 1055 for their machete . and any blade will either chip or roll the edge on a rock test tramontina yourself, put a decent edge on one and go beat the sh*t of it. for the price you can't go wrong, SPECIALLY the camp knife with the 12 inch blade. personally i prefer to add some hockey stick on the handle for better grip, but it maybe because i am Canadian ho you can also try cold steel, a little bit more expensive but still affordable and the kraton handle will stick to your hand and is decently comfortable.

I'm from Brazil, and people here think Tramontina's machetes are too flexible, so they kinda "sing" if you don't hit with good edge alignment. The preferred brands here are Matão and Collins (the old ones, with wooden handles). But I think Matão only supplies locally, which are sturdier. I personally like tramontinas because they come with a good grind. I have one Matão and I had to put a bevel in it myself. Plus, Tramontinas are very cheap. Anyway, whatever you do, just DON'T buy a machete with a plastic handle. Wood handle or nothing.

They still have some low priced stuff, but they also have a large percentage of really great blades made with steels like 52100, CTS-XHP and BD1, CPM-3V, and CPM-S35VN, not to mention some really excellent DSC Damascus. The days of hit or miss AUS-8 and VG-1 are pretty much gone. If you manage to break an SRK made with CPM-3V, chances are you were trying to drive railroad spikes or you picked a fight with Hephaestus, Greek God of blacksmithing and metallurgy.

I might have pick one of these up after finding out it's from cold steel. I bought their Bowie style machete on a whim last year and figured it would be kinda gimmicky but after putting an edge on it I use it constantly for things like splitting lighter pine, hacking animal bones off when I skin something, or trimming limbs around the house. It was like $19 and I don't think you can possibly break the darn thing under any normal use. Ended up ordering 2 more incase they ever stop making them again like they did a few years ago.

I bought one a few weeks ago. I thought much the same about it when I looked it over. I bought a couple of boy scout axes in the mid 50's that were made by Plumb at that time fine hand forged thin axes. This axe, though not as finely finished, is a very well designed tool. Cost was less than $30.

This video answered a question I had that I was going to ask about servicing your tools while in the field. Using just a file and that cool little sharpening stone which would be light enough to pack you were able to put a decent edge on that axe. I am for sure going to for sure purchase that file and stone. I would assume you could do the same for a knife as well if you needed to. Thank you for sharing your knowledge in these videos.

I like my Cold Steel axe, too. I got mine about the same time as you did. I made a leather sheath for my CS axe. It stands in the corner of the kitchen with my Husky Carpenters axe and 4.5# True Temper axe. I did take that Taiwan label off my axe.

What I like about your videos is that you are human, you respect your wife and son, you are brutally honest. Great channel. About the human part: I found myself yelling to you, "hey, the file is right next to you! Next to your boot! I laughed at myself while watching you search your pockets for the file. Hahaha. Because we all do the same thing. Please keep your channel going.

My grandfather used to make his own axe heads but I wasn't taught how to make them from what I remember (I was babysit at age 5) he would bring home steel ingots that had a black tarnish and just clean it in some chemicals, then put in his forge for idk how many hours but he would take it out then with a welded on axe head hole on some block to the ground he would bend the ingot around the axe head hole, and shape it into an axe many times over and over, then once finished put it in fire and take out once really orange and dip it in some blackish oil. Finished product was a axe head around the hole was wider and the blade was thinner but dang I still use them and I don't even know how he made his own double bit axe

I picked one up a few months ago, used it today in the rain to clear some branches from a downed tree in the middle of the forest path. I have to say, the price makes it so that it is so easy to not worry about it going to the ground, or getting wet, etc. It is a monster chopper, I would recommend it to anyone who is in need of this size of axe

I scraped off the sealant, carved a bit more curve into the back of the handle before the end to give it more bite in the hand similar to the Bruk, and then oiled it... Makes it amazing.

@Wranglerstar, I think it's time to do an update. Currently the Sanyi outdoor axe seems to be the raining champ on Amazon. Not in terms of performance, but in terms of price and 5-star reviews. The CS Trail Boss is bouncing between 50-65$ and the Sanyi outdoor axe is only 20$. For someone who's dirt poor, I'd love to know your thoughts on the best wood processing system to bring on a camping trip. My picks are; Mora Companion Heavy Duty (18$), Bahco Laplander (32$), and for axe (I don't knot yet...).
