@@skyedog24 I enjoyed a great film last night that was made at the end of 2022 called “the whale”. There’s always been great cinema & terrible cinema (and average cinema). My point isn’t to denigrate cinema from the last decade. Like cinema from any time; most of the cinema from the last decade is rubbish, some of it is good and some of it is average. But more to underline that this film from 75 years ago was more entertaining and enthralling than most films I’ve seen in the last decade. Maybe studios should have a rethink about how films should be made (and save themselves a lot of money)? Most cinematic productions from 75 years ago were as much rubbish as most of what has come out in the last decade, this was among the better one’s.

It was meant to be an eye-opener. We could stand to see it now.

Read somewhere that this is the only film directed by Welles that did not exceed the budget nor the shooting days schedule and ended generating a profit. Of course he did not have complete control of the movie like he had in his more personal projects but his direction was impecable and the movie is a great one, very entertaining.

Je ne trouve pas. Welles a dit que c'était un film médiocre et cela à cause de Goetz. Et je suis totalement d'accord avec lui. S'il n'y avait pas Welles et Robinson, on ne ferait pas attention.

@@Niko3387Y il ne parlait pas de son interprétation mais du scénario. Welles disait que sa présence physique était trop envahissante, qu'elle faisait exploser l'écran, et cela n'avait rien à voir avec son interprétation. Il avait tout à fait raison . Il voulait que le détective soit joué par une femme ( Agnès Morehead). Et bien je pense qu'il avait encore raison. Cela aurait créé un déséquilibre inquiétant et non ce duel de deux acteurs envahissants comme Welles et Robinson. Personnellement je trouve que le film est très moyen. Et cela n'a rien à voir avec le sujet ( recherche de criminels nazis) qui a été très peu exploité par la fiction depuis.

Have you seen The other side of the wind? shot between 70-76 and came out on Netflix 2018. Wonderful film. The reels spent most of the time in a French vault

@@martynhanson That film is as eccentric and nonsensensical as a lot of his other stuff. He has little maturity or restraint, so many of his films feel extremely hamhanded. I reserved judgement for so many years, because I felt I SHOULD like them. But after seeing The Third Man, a few days ago, I've had it. If I had realized Wells directed this, I might not have watched it. But I have seen it before, and I knew it was ok.

The detective is a great actor, in Scarlett street movie his facial expression and general attitude was typically of an idealistic artistic dreamy man, here is typically a logical authoritative man .he is so IN in both

I heartily concur !

Every shot in a Welles film is like a mini work of art or a painting.

I love this movie! Great cast,wells direction perfect.

I had my doubts at the beginning, but then the suspense just kept mounting, right up until the end. Glad I persevered!

This movie is phenomenal.

Great movie. and so well acted. Especially impressed with the drugstore owner's role.

A Welles classic though apparently he wasn’t a big fan himself which is a shame as it is excellent and Welles himself makes a great villain. Edward G Robinson moved from gangster to a much wider variety of roles ranging from this to children’s adventure to sci-fi and here he is on top form. Loretta Young becomes more alive in the second half of the film and the final scenes in the clock tower are perfect.

1:17:45 chilling -- "Do you know what you are, Mr. Rankin? You're the absent-minded professor!"

Eddie Robinson in this role is a great role-model for Falk in `Columbo`.

@@Jasper7182009 Both great. Robinson could never carry a series and for years the way Peter did. Falk`s `Columbo` raises level TV. G-d how I enjoyed watching it (and interviewing Peter)

I think this is a better film than The Third Man from a dramatic point of view. I'm not educated enough to talk about the film techniques, because they are very different. But I like this better. Thank you for posting this.

I don't agree. "The Third Man" raises all kinds of questions about friendship, talent, greed, loyalty... "The Stranger" is a garden variety cat- and-mouse melodrama without much to recommend it in terms of suspense and character development.

Wow things have changed. A complete stranger comes barging into your home without being invited and it no big deal!

Very Interesting Movie !! I really Love Loretta Young. We watched her show on TV when I was a child. I was born in 1946. Orson Wells was an actor not a Nazi (I hope); but he made a good evil one for his movie. 😉

As others have said, SUCH a good movie.

A vastly entertaining Welles attempt at creating a bonafide Hollywood entertainment. Not one of his seminal achievements perhaps but far superior to similar films of its type. Welles even thought of initially considering Agnes Moorehead in the Robinson role. Now that would have been interesting even though the latter nevertheless did a fine job.

Wow, my recent interest in noir led me to this film, which at first I thought was difficult to understand having not seen any preview or plot, but I caught on quickly, and just as quickly this film thrilled me. Thank you for sharing it. engideer gaming

IMHO, the second best of Welles' movies after Kane and his only big box office success. i know sophisticated critics rate other Welles movies as much higher, but this movie has it all in terms of what movies are really supposed to do. When given a budget Welles was always a genius. His direction of his actors is perhaps the finest of any Hollywood director in history. You never see any thing but great performances from his Hollywood cast's, and that's an amazing record. Great, great movie, this one.

It was a moderate hit, after two flops and his Brazilian fiasco. He had a four-picture deal with Spiegel, but for unknown reasons it was dropped. Typical of the financial mishaps and tangles Welles kept getting into. You have to suspect that the shrinks are right about accident-proneness.

Great movie, I really enjoyed it, especially the end was great with the sword of the truth' angel. Thanks for it.

I'm sorry to say this. It's nothing against you, but you can't use words that translate into English words of 5 or more syllables. Most Americans won't understand them. Even I don't understand apoteotico, and I've read quite a lot more than the average American, but I've never seen that before. Just so you know for the future. I hope your day is a good one. ✌🏼

A typically dynamic performance from Orson Welles. Backed up by other greats such as Edward G Robinson. Evidently an early role for Richard Long (Nanny & The Professor 1970s), who would die at only 49 in December 1974. RIP to all.

@laurahoward5426 Do we ever really know how old anyone is/was? So many lies have been told over the years that we can't afford to believe too much. I was a small boy when Long died, & the contemporaneous report gave his year of birth as 1925. I'll stick with this rather than place fresh reliance on latter-day rhetoric. The historian should always be cautious in assessing details written up well after an event because these are frequently penned to fit in with later ideas & bear no reflection of what was actually the case. Alexis de Tocqueville put it well: "History is a gallery of pictures; with many copies, but few originals". Quite so.

I read he originally wanted his friend (and original member of his Mercury Players) Agnes Moorehead to play the investigator but the producers insisted on Eddie G to booster its box office appeal. Agnes was a truly gifted actress & could have done wonders with the role (though of course Eddie G is xlnt, as always).

Wayyyyyyy underrated

Another interesting film is Ingmar Bergman THE SERPENT'S EGG, particularly the final 10 minutes.

Great film! Edward G. is one of my favourite actors. Right up to Soylent Green! Ad in H.G. and that clock tower (I was thinking he'd just fall but that ending was glorious!) and you've got what a brilliant film. Thanks for posting it! One question. Is this version in the original aspect ratio? It looks like it's been changed to an old TV aspect ratio.

I have to go for now oh yes I will be back this movie I've seen it before it's that good, I remember the first time I saw it, I didn't even want to blink , Yes it's that good.

Welles said this movie was mediocre because the real producer, Bill Goetz refused to listen to Welles . Welles didn't want Robinson, not because he was a bad actor of course but because it would be boring. He said that it would be far more interesting if a woman ( Agnes Morehead) chased the criminal. And many scenes were cut by the idiot Goetz.

Shades too of `Strangers on a Train` as the carousel sequence does not end the novel.
