The Strange State of 'Live Service' Gaming

Ойындар

As someone who mainly plays single player games, I find the ever-evolving state of games like Fortnite a little bit... Bizarre. While I don't believe 'Live Service' games can kill off single player stuff completely, they are undoubtedly changing the industry forever.

A guy at work made a solid point for live service games. For $15/mo, having access to any game indefinitely sounds pretty good, if you're the type to play a game once or twice and never again. Provided you have good enough Internet and time to constantly download and install new titles, that seems fine. The problem I have with it is, it doesn't take very long before you've already paid full retail price for every single one of them and yet you don't own any of them. You pretty much have to play regularly and fairly heavily to get your money's worth, and for a lot of us, the adults paying for it, that's not really feasible when most of your time goes to 😂 other responsibilities. People have careers, kids and meth habits. Trying to juggle all of that and make time for video games gets near impossible. So I don't hate live service as a model, I just don't like the precedent it sets as the de facto way to buy games. Id rather pay full price one time and be free to play it at my own leisure, at any time, and not worry about forcing time into my tight schedule to make sure I got a fair value for my purchase and having to worry if the servers are even still able to provide me with what I paid for. I learned my lesson with eShop. I had a lot of money on 2 3ds that I can never get back unless I buy a switch, and then I'll be able to spend the money with Nintendo. "If you give us $400, we'll let you give us another $200.". What a bargain.

I still buy physical copies of games whenever possible for this reason! But it's still sometimes disorienting when you don't play a game for a month and come back to an updated version which feels completely unfamiliar.

Absolutely love the kart idea for Fortnite, that would have been truly epic! ;)

Haven't played much Fortnite lately but definitely seems like closest thing to 'metaverse' now.. don't know if that's good or not. Alan wake thing seemed random but like you say makes sense

I think they are appealing to people who already play Fornite with friends who are not in the same room. I play GW2 with my Guild, we sometimes go to play Among Us or Garticphone, with us all on Discord. I think these are designed to do the same thing give groups of online friends things to go do without them leaving the platform.

I haven't played much fortnite at all but rocket racer seems to appeal to fans of arcade racers rather than party game people or realistic racing sim type people

22:59 I feel like Fortnite is the best of this kind of game, pretty cheap and if you ever wanted the same amount of content that it gives you from a traditional game, we would be on Fortnite 57 by now

I don't *fully* blame the live service model. A lot of live services just had a myriad of other problems. Remember Evolve?

Single player games are honestly really boring to me, and I hate paying for a game that I won’t play again after ive beat it. Id rather play a game than play a movie

I'd rather play a movie then do anything remotely competitive (heck, I'd prefer watching a movie over anything remotely competitive)

Some of the most compelling games are single player because they’re able to create a more tailored experience, also they’ve generally got much better narratives because they’re allowed to end. Some of my favorite single player games are Super Metroid, Halo: Reach’s campaign, Dark Souls 3. Appreciating games as an art form has definitely increased my enjoyment and made playing games more meaningful. It feels less like I’m grinding away at a task and more like experiencing a team’s effort. Trying to play a game “forever” felt like I was wasting my short time on Earth.
