@@steadfastthinker that's not really how it works, yes authors are entitled to creativity, but readers are also entitled to criticize their work, no work of fiction gets a pass on this front, besides, people don't criticize entire generes, or at least they shouldn't. Twilight deserves actual critism because of its narrative shortcomings, not because it's a romance story, just like there are good horror movies, and bad horror movies, there are also good and bad romance novels, one may not like a particular genre, but that's personal preference, the quality of any given narrative is objective, and if that quality is lacking the story will be shit no matter the genre.

Well... i always agree with bella and thought she was boring but then the books are from her POV and she sees herself that way we have no idea how others see her. I havent read midnight sun but i heard it has more moments showing what made bella special at least for Edward

I always liked Kristen’s mannerisms in the role tbh. She captures like the ticks and awkwardness of a socially insecure person who spends a lot of time alone. Felt more genuine to me than most teen performances of someone who’s supposed to be “awkward”.

no she doesn't. it looks like she's trying to have "ticks" but also trying to make it hot. awkward people like me (I'm autistic, so obviously have ticks and stutters, etc) aren't constantly fluttering my eyes with my mouth open and breathing all hard like I just finished having sex.

I never realized how much reading the books informed my experience of the movies. Especially the part about Bella having her ability pre-change - in the books it's established that the others did, too. Alice had visions as a child and was committed to an asylum, where a vampire janitor took a father-like caring to her and turned her to protect her from James. Jasper could feel other people's emotions as a human, which was enhanced into the ability to control them as a vampire. Edward was exceptionally, creepily good at "reading" people and could always tell what people were thinking, which became the literal ability to hear others' thoughts post-change.

I'm with you -- it really didn't occur to me until much later how many gaps I was filling in with my memory of the books. It wouldn't have solved every problem, but it certainly would have helped if more story-building elements (like how vampires get their powers) were given a little more weight in the films.

Hands down my favorite scene in the movie is when Edward jumps on Bella’s truck when she’s washing it in her driveway and he invites her to meet his family. They actually appear to be interacting in a friendly, silly, teenage relationship kind of way. They finally have chemistry on screen and its fun to see. Then the scene ends and Edward and Bella are just miserable again 😭

I come from a different era. Vampire novels when I was in high school were Bram Stoker's Dracula or Anne Rice's Interview with a Vampire (LeStat was the primary character in the series). The difference between those books and what kills the Twilight series for me is simple. The Twilight books treat vampires like they are contemporaries who stay up to date with the times to fit in. Instead of being an apex predator that has experienced decades, centuries, or milennia, we get Edward, and the rest of the Cullen's. Who play baseball, and make friends with their food because they're vegan. And oh yeah, a vampire who is decades old has a crush on a 16 year old girl. Isn't that cute? If you ask anybody who liked those books to post a photo of themselves when they read those books, they will call the photo cringe. Ok. That was 1 decade ago. 7 or 8 decades later you will say you looked cute when you were young. And you will think 16 year olds are immature , naive, foolish, fun, and optimistic. That's called experience and perspective. Honestly. The book is about a 16 year old girl getting pregnant by an 80 year old sparkly vampire. Because love. Bonus twist: The other guy you liked ends up crushing hard on your daughter. Love the characters all you want. The plot is creepy Greek tragedy garbage. Admit it. There is no way you would like to be in a relationship with an age gap of more than 10 years. That's what kills the books for me. I can suspend belief that vampires and werewolves exist. I just can't believe a 16yo girl likes someone Joe Biden or Donald Trump's age in a romantic mysterious way.

But seriously, between him, Billy, Carlisle,Alice and Jasper, Seth too, loved Seth too, they're practically the only thing that makes the films worth watching for me? Hell, fuck it, only reason I'll watch the films all the way through is the Dad Squad! Book has surprisingly got some of the best dads in literature! Which is saying something because usually the dads in these kinds of books are either completely absent or just wants to kill their kid or something. Though I'm still questioning how a chill ass dude like Billy ended up with a fucking nice guy™ for a son. Like Billy, my dude, um, think you might need a replacement there. You're way too good for that boy. Your boy um, I'm afraid, quoting the wise words of Hank Hill that boy ain't right.

I mean, he is underused but I think everyone forgets that the only reaction to Jacob basically sexually assaulting Bella with a kiss, in response to which she punched him and broke her hand, was "Really??" followed with "Congratulations!" and his police duty of asking whether he wanted to press charges. Wtf dude, your daughter was not and is not okay with Jacob kissing her, no matter how long you've know him or his father.(what Charlie does slightly varies from book to film but it's never the reaction you should expect from a father)

An aspect, that I don't see people talking about, of how is Edward so drawn into boring Bella is because Edward can read everyone's mind, he knows everything about everyone and can predict how the person will behave anyway. In Midnight Sun he seems so bored and tired of everyone, he even comes off as a bit arrogant and unberable - until Bella comes in, someone he can't read, in the beggining he only knows about her trough others thoughts, and for him to actually get to know her he has to have a conversation with her. She is the first person in a century he can actually talk with without knowing everything at once. That is what they do for days after meeting each other, asking questions about each other everyday and not getting tired of it.

I always felt that Edward was so awkward in his initial interactions with Bella because he hadn't had to TRY to get to know a person in a century. He was out of practice with social niceties like small talk. he judged everyone he met based almost solely on their thoughts, dismissing most of them without the need or desire to get to know them, and Bella's closed thoughts intrigued him for the first time in years. That and her being his Singer, which was arguably the biggest draw for him.

That's why Bella and Edward play chess so much during their honeymoon. She's the only person he CAN play with because he doesn't know what moves she's going to make. Before Bella, the only person he could "play" with was Alice, but because she can predict his moves and he can read her mind, they just sit there staring at the board for a long time before one of them gives up and knocks over their king.

That's honestly fine they meet this way, no one questions it, it's a good start. The problems are: A) Why is the world's most boring girl the one with the vampire-magic-repellent power? It could've been anyone, if that's all Edward needed to like a human, Bella's character could've been ANYONE and it would've worked. B) Since Bella is so vague, their relationship never goes beyond that. It works really well that the only one who catches a mind-reading vampire's attention is someone whose brain he can't read. But that's where their chemistry and reason to be in love, specifically Edward's reason to be in love with Bella stops. Their personalities don't work together because Bella has none, and Edward is THE worst love interest I've EVER seen. And that brings me to: C) Why does Bella like Edward? He is terrible! He's creepy, selfish, unaware of his own flaws, manipulative, disrespectful, and overall toxic! He only ever thinks about himself while stating that he does everything for Bella, he is overdramatic, puts both of them in danger with his stupidity, he has no sense of privacy or boundaries or respect for others. It really seems like Belle likes the idea of being with a vampire and the concept of being a vampire more than Edward himself. Which is a major issue in a romance story. I honestly wouldn't have been able to watch these movies if not for Alice who absolutely ROCKS, I love her a lot. And I did also like Jacob, especially in the early stages of his character, but of course they had to ruin him, God forbids we have a male character who's not a walking red flag! (Except for Charlie, we love Charlie)

The problem I have with Twilight is that literally every character is more interesting than the main characters. The back story of all the Cullens is far more fascinating than Edward’s and certainly more interesting than anything bella does in all 4 books. That and the imprinting I really dislike the concept altogether it just seems way too much like grooming to me.

@@bloodmoonvampire6632 they tell all the storie of how Alice and jasper met, how jasper was a neofit in the civil war and how another girl vampire (i think victoria?? not sure) used him. And Alice knew in her visions he will regret and will want a changed and that they will fall in love so Alice met him in a particular spot so they could meet in the present.

Something Kristen Steward did really well, is portraying an actual awkward teen, that lives in her head. Notice how much she just doesn't notice that happens around her. She played that so we'll in fact, that people tend to get annoyed by that, same as people who don't get them do in real life.

So what I’ve gathered is that Bella is portrayed by Kristen Stewart as a “flat, boring character”, but it’s only because the books (apart from midnight sun & short life of Bree tanner, and the section of breaking dawn from Jacob’s perspective) are from Bella’s perspective. Bella views herself as a boring, flat person. She doesn’t see the worth in herself- which is why she’s always describing everyone else in such vivid detail and is in such awe of others. When you read Midnight Sun, you get to see how others perceive Bella. She is beyond kind- standing up for friends and making others feel as though they aren’t odd or unwelcome. She left her mom because while Renee was happy to have her, she could tell that she needed time to flourish with Phil. She saw how much her dad, Charlie, was eating out all the time and so alone without Renee, that she cooked his meals and made sure he was well taken care of. So, in this instance- it’s all about whose telling the story. Bella is.... but she is an unreliable narrator.

Twilight illustrated the pain of a teenage heartbreak so well. Bella sitting in that montage experiencing literal pain is so real. That’s the best part to me

I related to it so much. It kinda does show what depression post breakups can be like.

I moved to a small town in middle school and was treated like a celebrity. I met a guy my freshman year who was the only other goth person in the town and I was infatuated with him. We dated and I knew he was only going to be there for 4 months, but when he left...it was like what is the point of life? I read the Twilight books in my late 20s and I thought, damn....this book perfectly captures a teen girl with some abandonment and mental health issues, drug addiction (Edward Cullen being addicted to Bella), plus it just being extra for the sake of story telling. I loved the shit out of it.

My favorite line from the movie is when Edward drops Bella off at Jacob's (bc apparently, Bella is a commodity that can be traded and shared 🙄) and they're faced with a shirtless Jacob, Edward says "doesn't this guy own a shirt?"

When he said "we really don't like it when teenage girls love something" I literally screamed, please, thank you, my whole teenage years left me with lots of insecurities about my likes bcs people just think teenage girls are dumb or stupid or have no taste whatsoever. It's soooo common and soooo unvalidating, I can't belive people have not yet started a conversation about it. Is really not fair.

Yes, Rosalie's Revenge would be an awesome movie. She is effing gangster in that scene.

If you actually read the books that would answer all your questions. Bella’s friends were meant to be comedic relief. Edward spent days asking Bella endless questions about herself. She loved reading and taking care of her irresponsible mom. And before they were together Edward would learn her character by watching her through other peoples minds. And it’s explained in the books that every vampire takes their strongest attributes as a human into their vampire life. And Alice could already see the future as a human and was actually in an insane institution.

For any movie adaptation, if you need to go back to the original source in order to "understand" it, then the movie can't stand stand up for itself and it is not well written. Film adaptations should be written in a way that the original message can be conveyed through that sole work.

He criticizes Twilight in general rather than the movies specifically for not showing Edward and Bella getting to know each other, and then he shows a picture of Stephanie Meyer as if this problem was with the books and not an issue with the movie. And I think the movies might actually explain how the vampire powers work, but maybe I'm misremembering because I read the books first so it always made sense to me.

As someone who grew up in a very small town, I can verify that every new kid at my school became popular and everyone’s main focus within their first 2 days, they were like a shiny new toy that everyone wanted to play with. This is probably because nothing much happens in small towns because the population is so small that everybody knows everybody and everyone knows everything that happens, which isn’t much. It’s just kind of monotonous until a new face appears, a change to the normal environment.

Also in Midnight Sun, it's established that everyone is attracted to Bella's mom without anybody realizing it (other than Edward)...a similar thing happens with Bella when she moves to Forks and interacts with Aro and they're all so interested in her. She inherited some of Renee's attractiveness, which makes a lot of sense since she also inherited Charlie's "quiet" mind.

K-pop's popularity in west is another example. I don't think society find them cringey. Blaming society's misogyny for hate on a franchise doesn't cut it. If it's a good story, society would accept it. Not everyone can simp for the toxic relationship between Bella and Edward. I believe the hate is well deserved.

I mean, Twilight just _is_ a good example of something that's a poorly made product with an infamous reputation (given the glorification of stalking, the toxic main relationship, etc). So it really is not a great helping point. And I'm not even a guy lol. I think a better example would be One Direction but OD is not even as hated as Twilight. There are also things that teenage girls aren't associated with that are considered "cringy" and there are things that teenage girls _like_ that isn't considered "cringe". So the situation is not black and white and nobody really talks about that Then again, American culture might just be different and there are things that I'm missing (I'm not American nor do i live in America lol)

It really wasn't that. I read all of it when the hype was starting to fade. Then they were going to make movies glorifying the toxic mess. At least I recognized it as toxic etc. I was wondering how it even got that far when the source material wasn't the best in the first place. For someone it was aimed at, it didn't work and now we're dealing with its worse legacies running rampant. It wasn't toned down much in the movies and it's still a problem imo.

Yeah, as long as they know/ understand that Bella and Edward's relationship isn't a good example, let them enjoy things, it's entertainment.

I have a few notes from reading the books so far (I just finished Eclipse) 1. In the first book (Twilight) Jacob basically told Bella that Edward was a vampire on the beach. 2. Bella confirms Edward is a vampire in a calm car scene. That was nothing like the drama-filled iconic scene from the movie. 3. It doesn't say in the movies but when Bella had visions of Edward in New Moon, that was just her mind trying to cope he knew nothing about that until she told him at the end of the book. 4. In Eclipse Jacob Black also makes a suicide threat after finding out Bella is engaged to Edward. 5. It is not explained AT ALL in the movies that the werewolves don't age once they hit wolf puberty until they learn how to "fully control" the wolf or just stop being a wolf. 6. In Eclipse there is a chapter where Bella goes down to La Push and learns about the history of the Quileute tribe and they should have gone deeper into those stories because they were pretty interesting. 7. It is explained that if Edward Cullen never existed and they lived in a normal world Bella and Jacob would have been soulmates and it feels like what Bella wants/ needs. 8. Even though Jacob imprinted on Renesmee (Bella's baby) at first it was a big brother/guardian thing but Stephanie Meyer kind of hinted at how Renesmee will stop aging or slow down at a certain point and will get with Jacob. 9. I saw this as another comment, but Alice was locked in an asylum for having visions as a human. Jasper was really in tune with people's emotions. Emmet was just buff, and Edward was really good at guessing what people were thinking. 10. Bella is just like really horny and Edward smells good, his voice sounds like velvet, and he looks like a Greek statue.

Now that I think of it, Kristen Stewart did a phenomenal job capturing Bella’s character. Underrated performance

In Midnight Sun (Twilight from Edward’s pov) it’s revealed that Edward has a hard time reading Charlie’s thoughts, but unlike Bella’s some of his still get through. Edward wonders if there’s a genetic reason for Bella’s thoughts being protected. Also, the reason some powers work on Bella is because her shield protects her from powers related to mental abilities but not physical ones. Though I’d argue that she should be protected from Jasper’s as well since emotions are formed in the brain. Like if she’s protected from Jane’s power she should also be protected from Jasper’s.

It's also noted that Renee has a really, REALLY loud mind, to the point that it's strongly implied that she has a subtle ability to telepathically control everyone around her. Nessie seems to have inherited her abilities from Renee.

To be fair, Jessica does bring a sense of self awareness tbh. I wish she was used more. When she says “thats so funny” without laughing I think thats meant to show she’s being polite but she doesn’t really like Bella (because she notices that the blonde dude is into her). I also think there’s a super funny scene when bella is depressed in the second movie and she’s walking with jessica and she’s in her head narrating about lamenting over edward, but if u listen to the background u can hear jessica just absolutely roasting bella for being a bad friend and being absent. It’s really funny and self aware. Also, the whole idea of them falling in love at first does actually make sense. Bella is the only person who edward can’t mind read, and she also smells really good. That makes her inticing to him. On the other hand, vampires are described as inhumanely attractive and on top of that edward saves her life multiple times. I’d fall in love if it were me. The rest of your criticisms are valid lol

The superpower thing is also explained a bit better in the last book. They say that turning someone into a vampire amplifies their natural power/abilities. There's also a story about how Aro turned his sister because he hoped she would show a powerful and useful ability, but her ability was to make people feel happy. Marcus and Aro's sister got married and were planning to run away from the Volturi, but Aro found out and had his sister killed because Marcus' ability was more useful to him. Truth be told every secondary character has a more interesting story than the main couple.

the last paragraph about them falling in love makes sense to me now because you’ve explained that: i missed that watching twilight as a casual viewer so if they just explained that in the movies better, then i’d like their love story a whole lot more (now i can appreciate it too, since for me the highlight of love stories is seeing the characters fall in love, & i didn’t really see that with edward & bella but now i get it, thanks to you ! :D)

Also Anna Kendrick's character has me rolling in laughter everytime she appears on screen.

There's a theory going around that Bella has a half-vampire ancestor, explaining that her body doesn't feel natural which comes out as awkward/clumsy how she can smell blood in the books, how she's so pale despite living in Arizona, how she has the ability to shield. it goes on to when you see her turned into a vampire she becomes more comfortable with herself, more aligned with the vampire DNA, like the last piece of a puzzle has been placed. It sort of makes sense to me.

The first book as pretty outspoken about the fact that the only reason everyone in forks is interested in Bella is because it's a crazy small town and nobody there thinks that anyone would come there out of their own volition - not because of anything about her. There's that.

Plus, she is beautiful and not interested into typical girly stuff -> seems to be not annoying. Some are attracted to and some aren‘t. In this case more are or we see more who are than that are not.

There is actually an explanation for Bella's powers. She has a mental shield, which protects her mind specifically. It doesn't protect her from ALL powers... just those that target her mind. Alice's ability to see the future isn't a mental attack, so Bellas shield doesn't effect it. Jaspers powers effect emotions in a biologial/chemical sense, so her shield doesn't protect her (that one is sort of iffy but that's the explanation we're given). Since most vampire attacks and abilities are mental in nature it just seems like her abilities block all attacks. But if say Benjamin were to use his elemental abilities to send a wall of water or a fireball at Bella, Bellas mental shield wouldn't do a dam thing. Also, it is possible to have abilities without being a vampire. Alice could see future even as a human (she was locked in an insane asylum because of it). Its implied Edward was very intuitive and could read people very well even as a human as well. The implication being that gifted vampires were gifted human who had certain abilities or traits enhanced when they became a vampire. Movies of course don't explain this stuff as well as the books. But that's pretty normal for book to movie adaptations. Not saying Twilight doesn't still have it's share of holes. Just saying there are actual explanations for part about Bellas powers.

Almost all the Cullens backstories would make for incredible movies WAY better than what we got and I would watch the hell out of all of them. Rosalie a classic gangster movie of revenge…Carlisle an epic drama of one man’s internal struggles and redemption… Jasper a classic tale of the old west and war only under a vampire matriarchy… and Alice a classic horror set in a 1920s Asylum. Like seriously all those movie would be all so different and epic.

I think the line is good if it was delivered differently. I think a problem is that Bella's personality just isn't one we typically associated with sarcasm because she's supposed to be insecure and awkward, but instead of conveying that through Bella herself, they had to hone it home by making the scene physically awkward by having the two classmates begin to awkwardly laugh at it too. So it's more poor execution than the line being a bad joke.

Being inspired doesn’t mean you will make a shot for shot retelling of the same story. Two teens that fall in love at first sight in the first movie and willing to kill themselves for each other in the second movie, they literally start the second movie watching Romeo and Juliet. Just because Romeo and Juliet is a tragedy doesn’t mean people can’t get inspired to make a love story from it maybe do a bit of research before going off on a rant.

There's an extremely short explanation in the books about Bella's supernatural ability as well as other vampires - it's nothing fancy Edward just says that basically a lot of humans have very subtle "abilities" that most are unaware of, but these abilities are heightened when a human is turned into a vampire just like strength, speed, vision, and all other sense are heightened

Reading the books really did change my experience with the movies and I never realized how much until now. You raised very good points that never occurred to me because I knew the context/further detail from the books. Anyhow, great analysis! I really enjoy your videos ^♡^

Your comments about Rosalie reminded me of the one (one) *absolutely perfect* moment in the first Twilight film: Bella comes over to the Cullens' for dinner, and the family are excited because (besides most of them feeling happy for Edward) they've been living in this nice house but never had a chance to use the kitchen before; Bella, however, explains with slight embarrassment that she ate before she came so as not to inconvenience them, since she knows they don't exactly do food. At that moment, without even changing her expression -- gotta maintain that iron control over herself to keep her monstrous side in check, doesn't she -- Rosalie smashes the beautiful (and full) glass salad bowl between her hands. I will mock the Twilight franchise in both its incarnations over so many things, but that single moment is fucking *amazing.* No notes.

"Edward is a creep but Bella still thinks he's lit, Charlie, that's my guy Alice is so fucking fly. The werewolves are boring, I still don't like the ending. The last book was treason , Jacob should be in prinson." oh my, I think the same. Excellent.

But you see, every single thing that you mentioned is what makes it perfect for a 13-year-old girl. It was perfectly angsty and intense and that's kind of how being a teenager feels. Remember how every crush you had felt soul-crushing and life-altering? It was very.. validating in a way. It's also interesting to point out that in this story, the girl gets everything she wants and it's all her choice - her choices don't get invalidated or ridiculed, and she never gets punished for them, and that was refreshing as a young girl. We were so often told that we didn't know what we really wanted and other people knew better. The main problem with twilight is that people hold it up to something it never pretended to be. Also: that one scene in the first movie - the overhead shot of the car, the blue tint, full moon playing in the background? It slaps. I c o n i c.

There is an interesting idea here where Bella is hard to read for the audience because she is hard to read for the characters. I don't think that's what the creator was doing but it is her super power. Making her unreadable as a character kind of puts us in Edward's position. Which maybe is why Edward becomes obsessed with her. She's the only person in 100 years that he can have a normal relationship with. Everyone else he just reads there thoughts and moves on. She's probably the most peaceful person he's ever met. Also with Bella is the only know human to become pregnant from a vampire and had her vampire powers before she became one. Maybe meeting her first vampire made her obsession kick in. As the audience I know I wanted to know more and more about vampires. Why wouldn't she.

Kind of off topic but I like how at 8:50 when Anna Kendrick's character says "That's so funny" she's being fake as hell, she's only laughing to look nice in front of the guy in that scene, who her character has a crush on. I've noticed (at least in my experience, others are free to disagree) that most girls immediately register that and most boys think she's being legit

My problem with the Twilight saga is how as a teenager you think this is true love, and you dont realise how toxic evryone is: Bella, Edward, Jacob. They're always manipulating, possesive an just overall toxic. And eeevery teenage girls was like "omg I want love like thaaaat" Oh, also the fact that the author made vampires (who I personally think are creepy and "scary") look so magical and cool AND SHINY. Like completely different mythical characters. But that's just me.

Historically, vampires could and were portrayed as beautiful and seductive. She might have pushed it to another level but she has the right to and it goes well with the story.

oh boyyy I had tears in my eyes when you played the score ! reminds me of better times when I was like 14 and had no care in the world and went to watch every twilight in the movies with my mom, just the two of us as some kind of ritual.... and yeah the movies were bad lol, but back then we loved them and let's be honest they're our guilty pleasure films to this day haha ! so many great memories... and the soundtracks were/are really the best. So nostalgic, all of it...

I looked up Alice’s backstory and we find out that she had her powers before she became a vampire. She was put into an asylum after people thought she was “crazy” for predicting the future. She was abused there and got turned into a vampire. I assume this is why Bella has her powers beforehand. Maybe they are all “destined” in a way to become vampires and that’s why some have their powers beforehand.

Haven't read the books in a while so I'm just guessing, but seeing as vampires and werewolves exist could there not just be other supernatural powers at play too? Like people who can see the future, or are immune to other mental powers and so on. Then, vampirism can just serve as a gateway for non superpowered people to gain superpowers, while those who had superpowers already just happened to also become vampires?

@@iiiivvvv9986 I remember a throwaway line that implied Angela could be a witch (it was never explored, but let's face it Bella never paid much attention to her human friends) and the Volturi said in the last book that these werewolves are actually shapeshifters that happen to turn into wolves and there is another type of werewolf out there. I guess it's quite possible there are more supernatural beings and powers at play.

@@Namitsukichan Yeah definitely more supernatural creatures. That's why Caius hates the shapeshifters, because he was almost killed by werewolves. Also Jane and Alec were burned as witches and actually showed witch-like powers as humans - the reason that Aro took interest in them. Honestly the movies seem to be for people who are already invested, they do a shit job at explaining the lore which is the BEST thing about the Twilight universe imo. I really wish instead of rewriting Edward and Bella's story or trying to convince us Jacob and Renesmee isn't pedophilic that she would expand upon the secondary characters and Twilight lore. The volturi's war with the romanians has always interested me.

Edward’s line in the restaurant is absolutely iconic and the best part of the movie. “Money... sex... money... sex.... cats?”

I’m a 38 year old who only saw Twilight for the first time very recently. Whilst I agree it’s cheesy and cringe in places, I really really enjoyed it! I binge watched all 5 movies in two days and I definitely enjoyed them. So much so I’ve already rewatched them once more 😆

I love this, you’re so real. And tbh i grew up reading the novels, watching and re-watching all the movies lol and I’ve made it to half the video and i agree with everything you’ve said so far. I really wish we could get a better remake.

When I rewatched the series again last month, the simplicity of their characters somehow comforted me. In a weird way, her blandness was a nice difference to the happy-go-lucky type of protagonists I usually see. The way that Bella is more accurately represented as a teenager really made me love the series. It's a bit weird but I love it :)

About Bella's "superpowers", I'm pretty sure that vampires can have a hint of their ability as humans. For example, Alice could sometimes predict the future as a human, but it doesn't explain that in the movies.

They don't really explain why they exist in the books either as far as I remember (correct me if I'm wrong though!) I guess we just have to accept that Alice and Bella just have these random innate abilities that seem to be amplified upon becoming vampires.

I read them waaay too long ago, but as far as I recall, Alice was in a psychiatric asylum because she had visions and Jasper was a charismatic soldier leading his troops with great motivational speeches. So, becoming a vampire kind of reinforces their natural human characteristics and turns them into powers. It is a flaw in the films that this is never explained, so if you haven't read the books you cannot understand where some things come from.

@@blancabt Oh whoops I really didn't remember that detail (granted its been a good 10 years since I've read the books I think) and I didn't really watch many of the movies. I guess its a detail they didn't feel was necessary for the movies but does then make for a really odd plot point that the audience is just made to accept. Thank you for clearing that up!

about the powers when she’s human thing. all of them seem to manifest something as a human. Alice could see visions, which was why they locked her at an asylum, Jasper was said to be extremely charismatic and convincing as a human, Edward mentions how he was always sensitive to people’s thoughts and “vibes” around him, so on and so forth. the powers just become more explicit and come to be in the control of it's user after transformation. also, Bella's power is mental, that's why Alice can still see her actions and Jasper can control her emotions - their powers are not illusions, they act in the real world

yes and to add what you said here in twilight universe, some humans are gifted with supernatural powers. bella inherited her powers from her father charlie who also exhibited resistance to mental powers but in rudimentary form while bella made it much more stronger.

I do think the movies would still have benefitted from explaining that somehow-- even a simple throwaway line, like saying it's not really something they've been able to figure out despite their centuries of collective experience, would have made the whole thing just the tiniest bit more logical.

I’m pretty sure in the books it mentioned how Bella’s thoughts were her most prized possession. They were the one thing that just hers. Which explains why she was immune to other vampire powers.

Breaking Dawn takes the time to mention that Benjamin was created especially because Amon knew he would be extra special even for a vampire. So he must have been able to do something to be singled out during his human life.

I like to listen to podcasts or movie reviews while doing my chores, I think I found a new top choice youtube channel for that. Thanks. Very entertaining and spot on reviews

They never sold me on the notion of bloodthirsty vampires going to high school where teens bleed ALL THE TIME from simple injuries, to over-squeezing pimples, to menstruation, biting one's tongue, getting in fights etc. They would be triggered by bloodlust at least once per week.

It's a bit hard to rationalize, yeah. I think the in-universe explanation is something along the lines of: it IS hard for them (particularly Jasper) and they have to be super careful around others if they aren't well practiced at managing their thirst. They always sit apart at lunch. They skip certain classes or activities where it could be a trigger (like blood typing day in Biology). The added layer is that Bella's blood smells SUPER GOOD for some reason, so when SHE get cut at the beginning of New Moon at the Cullens' house (where they can let their guard down a bit usually), it causes a near frenzy. But...still, yeah, they can't plan for the kid sitting next to them getting a paper cut or a bloody nose or something. So that's a huge flaw. As for menstruation...uh, believe it or not, Meyer has an explanation for that 😬. It's gross and doesn't make a huge amount of sense, so I'll spare you here, but if you want a cringe laugh you can look it up. Same for how Edward can...um...PERFORM in Breaking Dawn. So many cringe laughs.

I don’t remember who said it, but I heard once that Bella is a good character for shy, insecure girls to escape into. She’s introverted, doesn’t have many hobbies, not all that interesting of a person... and yet everyone just thinks she’s just great. As someone who was a relatively bland preteen/teenager, I always wanted to be like Bella because everyone liked her without much of a question. As an adult I understand that Bella is terrible, but from ages 12-15 she was a serious role model.

I agree! Honestly I'm 19 and still relate to her lol. It's nice to fantasize about a hot guy who's also a supernatural creature liking you when you yourself are just a normal boring awkward teen. When she becomes a vampire is when she gains her confidence.

actually, the superpower thing is explained in the books: some vampires have special abilities as humans that get enhanced and transformed into superpowers when they turn into vampires. Edward was amazing at reading people and knowing sort of what they were thinking, Jasper was an expert emotional manipulator and when he turned he could change peoples moods at his will, etc. so tecnically, it does make sense

Love your videos, just one caveat: In the books actually, they do have those powers before they turn. Being a vampire only exacerbates what is already there. That is why Bella has those blocks before she turns. Just like Jasper was so charismatic as a human that he was able to become a major of the army at 16 years old while pretending to be an adult, then when he was turned, he became capable of actually altering people's emotions around him, not just influencing them. Alice was locked in a mental hospital because she already had visions as a human, she could already see the future, and no one believed her, so they locked her away, and she was turned in that hospital, as a vampire she was just able to control those visions much better and have them be clearer, and to direct them even if she wanted to. Edward was likely already extremely perceptive as a human, and capable of "reading" people, before he became a vampire. Emmett was already wildly strong, and when he was attacked by a bear, he fought back, even though he lost, his strength was very amplified once he was turned. There's always a hint of something there before they're turned. Idk, just to explain one of your points and questions. I know a lot of things don't make sense, this is just not one of them, it is explained within universe at least. I also think a large part of Edward's early on obsession is related to his powers. He despised most people his entire life as a vampire because he is unable to stop the constant stream of thoughts of other people into his head, its why he isolates himself, it's why even his relationships with his own family are awkward because there's no privacy around him. Being unable to read Bella made her the first mystery he had had in over a century, she was the first person that couldn't just immediately disappoint, disgust him, or make him pity them, because he didn't know what she was thinking, because her thoughts weren't being pushed into his head against his will. I think the fact that it's not really explained that this is not something he controls, but rather something that goes on in his head 24/7 whether he wants it or not, is part of the issue when it comes to understanding some plot points. He's literally being driven crazy every day, but with Bella it's like when he's alone, there's silence, but better because he's not lonely.

Its unfair that when people like traditionally masculine interests that has crazy fans like sports (where fans are violent and literally killing each other), its still tolerable for society. Sports fans also talk about the topic constantly, watch it all the time, have merch everywhere, scream and yell and gather in large crowds, but society accepts it but god forbid someone likes kpop or other stuff that young girls like.

You are too generalising, imo it may related with the period of the culture, gaming culture was considered useless years ago, but now the value has shifted and even considered as a career. Kpop perhaps is still considered new and just reaches global phenomenon post 2015, so it is normal for some people to considered it strange, and it will change as the time goes.

Adam Sandler’s movies are money laundering schemes. Jack and Jill has the look of a movie with a 10-20 million budget, but it cost 79 million dollars to make. To put things in perspective, Jack and Jill cost 11 million dollars more to make than Twilight Eclipse. It cost 4 million dollars more than Independence Day. If it had one million more it would be as expensive as Shutter Island, Mission Impossible and the Brendan Fraser version of The Mummy.

YES! Try attending a youth group therapy for social anxiety and those are the mannerisms you get if not silence and staring at the floor. Another commenter said the people who hate Kristen Stewart’s mannerisms for being too weird are the same people who find others who act in that way to be cringe af. KS acted great as an insecure teen girl and Bella is written that way in the book.

@@ladygojo1320 I think I was a bit more of a resilient kid ahaha. I adjusted pretty well myself when I finally settled down for the end of high school and university. I do have a small group of friends and am very happy with myself. School counselors frankly used to stress me out much more than approaching peers (even ones I’m not close to). The school counsellors I knew came off as really patronizing. I’m not particularly uncomfortable with presenting or leadership roles in my academics. I ended up joining a school leadership program. I was socialized as a kid to be able to handle a normal amount of socialization. (Parent work parties) My habits only really happen when I’m hyper focused on certain tasks now.

I love your videos! I was nervous to watch this one because I love the twilight books and movies, purely for sentimental reasons. I only really disagree with one of your takes: I don’t think Bella is really that boring or bland. I mean she seems like that at first, but I think she has a lot of personality. She’s a caretaker for both her parents even though she never asked to be, but she’s not resentful. She’s selfless, and when she meets Edward it’s the first time she can be selfish and want something for herself. I think this is a good portrayal (in my own head canon) of a mentally ill girl who’s life is sad and boring, so she uses her exciting supernatural boyfriend as escapism. I think she’s very realistic: she’s had at sports, she doesn’t have many friends she feels close with, she misses her mom, she’s stubborn. She has a lot of very real characteristics and flaws. I like that she doesn’t want to get married young, she doesn’t just say yes to anything. She likes to argue too. I think New Moon is a really good portrayal of PTSD (im diagnosed with this & it is my own opinion that Bella also has suffered trauma). I love how time slips away from her, her friends forget about her, she is completely isolated after Edward leaves. This was very realistic to my own experience. I also think her power makes sense, and it was set up from the first book. Bella has always thought she wasn’t on the same “wavelength” as everyone else, like her brain was different.

18:40 I think they all had some characteristics as humans. Emmet was very strong. Rosalie was extremely beautiful, even as a human. Jasper was charismatic, and Alice had visions even as a human. I think its explained in her backstory.

She's so obsessed with Edward bcs, it's probably the first interesting thing that ever happened to her.

the reason edward is so infatuated with bella is because he sees her as this good, pure person. it's explained better in midnight sun (basically the first twilight book in edward's perspective) and his whole thing is he thinks he's some big bad terrible person, but along with bella's blood being like "heroin" to him and not being able to read her mind, the more he learns about her he sees that she's selfless and is attracted to that. that's like the best i could explain it. and bella is obsessed with edward because he's the one that protects her (i think)

Only shy persons will agree that Kristen nailed it as Bella. She portrayed that “awkwardness” so well and hey, we also know that for the world quiet and shy = boring and flat. In the books we see Bella is into books and that she’s always taking care of her family and friends (which for someone with 17 years old I think is pretty decent), but she being obsessed with Edward is not all that she is. In eclipse she said it, that she found “her place” in that vampire world and that’s why she fights for it (yeah, in the real world that sounds like bs 😅 but again, she fighting for what she wants is also another pretty decent quality).

Hello, shy and awkward person here who likes Twilight. Bella is awkward and painful to watch, yes, that was portrayed well. But the thing is, she's just not it. I've seen bunch of shy and awkward fictional characters, and their all at least 4 times better than Miss Swan.

@Noemí Hrdez You’re absolutely right. What I justified is also in the movies, but not as good as it should and I believe that often happens in adaptations. I also think Twilight was a phenomenon in which it was already implicit that you had read the books, so... I think the fans knew very well the whole plot as well as the characters and their motivations in that plot, and let’s be honest, this saga was a fan service. The movies were made for and because of these fans (money).

Gurl barely showed emotions while acting, she only showed emotions where she had to pretend to be in pain. And homegirl was awkward in scenes with the boys because she has to pretend she was attracted to men.

i still feel like the books were way better than the movie. all the cringy scenes people bash twilight for like the forest scene when she says he’s a vampire, it doesn’t exist. in fact, he never even really refers to himself as a vampire in the book when she finds out. the books also do touch on bella a lot more (esp in midnight sun, she talks about her life in arizona bc edwards is continuously asking her questions bc he can’t read her mind and he wants to know every detail about her). she is still, admittedly, a bland character - just a regular girl that reads books, “girl next door”, but i think that’s on purpose for the purpose of making it easier for the everyday girl to put themselves in her spot. the book is a little pretentious, but i think that’s the only ‘oof’ part about it. i think it does a good job of being a fantasy romance book for teenagers.

I agree! The forest "You're a vampire" scene didn't even happened in the books. They talked about it in the car after Bella's almost assault in Portland and then the "Your my personal brand of heroine" conversation was more lighthearted and happened in the meadow. I love the books and they're better because there were a lot of lighthearted and funny moments in them for me, and it was such a waste that the movies had to go choose the serious and melodramatic angle for all the movies. And even in the Twilight book, Edward and Bella did have conversations alone. I remember the part when they talked in the cafeteria and Edward kept the bottle cap from Bella's soda when the bell rang (and it was a moment when he actually acted like a teenage boy! and they didn't include it in the movie damn)

I completely agree, when I went back and re-read the book I remembered why I found Edward charming as a teen. He’s not nearly as angsty as his portrayal in the movie, there are so many more moments of him joking and being lighter in general. Plus Bella does call him out quite a bit, and you do actually get to see them get to know each other, there’s a whole week where he asks her pretty much every question he can think of from “what’s your favorite color?” To more complicated questions about who she is and how she thinks. If you only see the movie, Edward is really unappealing but in the book he’s your typical dark, edgy, charming, snarky YA boy.

@@amityislandchum let people enjoy things. they are written fine for a teen “novel”. never claimed it was the best, most profound book on earth. they’re teenagers in this book. it makes sense. edward’s life experiences complete stopped at the age of 17. he is both old as fuck but stuck in the mindset of a 17 year old. i think it’s interesting, esp in the newest book in his pov. no one is claiming that this book is the best book on earth, but it certainly isn’t that fuckin bad. she wrote the book, published it, etc in a total of 6 months, and for that, it’s pretty damn fine a read. chill out with the ego.

@@amityislandchum I get what you're saying. Frankly, I've just read the books last year and I know that a lot more other books I've read are better, but this is one of my guilty pleasures you know? There were definitely flaws and I think you're not a responsible Twilight fan if you don't recognize them. heck even the whole fandom roasts the franchise at some point. We never claimed it was a literary masterpiece -- just something you can enjoy without taking it too seriously. For others, it was nostalgic. Also it was a discussion about the movies not giving justice to what was portrayed in the books.

You brought up a really good point when talking about the relationship between Charlie and Bella because look at this from a fathers perspective, Bella and Edward’s relationship from first meet to marriage is only TWO YEARS. Imagine being a dad and having this daughter who don’t even really know just move in with you she meets a guy and then 3 months later is running away because of him and then you find her at the hospital with a story she fell done the stairs (that is the plot to a lifetime movie about domestic violence) and then they’re back to get her but then 6 months after that he dumps her and she’s in a depressive episode for 3 months, then goes to Italy comes back with the same up who just dumped and 3 months after that she’s engaged to him, she graduates high school and then the end of that summer at age 18 she married to this guy who is most likely him Charlie’s eyes abusing her. The no way Charlie A FUCKING COP did suspect that something crazy was going on but why did we never get to see those conversations. it was only 2 years.

Agreed. I watched the movies/read the books years ago but I distinctly remember thinking this also. Poor Charlie, just like every other dad out there wanting to save their daughter from an abusive relationship.

Looking back, Bella's character feels more like a veiled attempt at a reader-insert than an actual character, especially in the books. Like literally take any wattpad y/n and make it a person. This absolutely contributes to why Twilight had such a strong fanbase of primarily teenage girls.

That's how a lot of the ya books with female main characters were at the time. I can't say there aren't still any like that, but it seems like female mcs are getting more of a personality nowadays - my personal theory is, that it has something to do, with the books being written for teen girls, and we all know they're dumb (sarcasm), and publishers thought they could only sell books to us, if we could see ourselves in the mc, and that's the reason so many at the time were so bland

that's the case with a lot of characters tho. there are heaps of fantasy novels with bland male protagonists so that male readers can over identify with him and live out their male power fantasies, and yet they aren't getting beaten down like bella is

YES THIS THANK YOU. There are LEGITIMATE reasons to dislike Twilight that are worth talking about, you don't have to dig deep to find its problems. Blindly hating on it because of this socially ingrained hatred of all things girls like because "girls are dumb"... is wrong. If you're going to hate on Twilight, hate on it for the right reasons.

I do wonder if ordinary people who do extraordinary things know before hand it will be popular. If Twilight sold two copies you wouldn’t feel this way but the content would remain the same. All romance novels have toxicity because real relationships do. And really who would want to read or watch: “Everything went well and no one was ever hurt or had sex ever, the end”?

@@kylemiller2414 it's not about whether a work "has toxicity", it's about how it handles it. SMeyer signed a contract with a publisher, aimed her book series towards a specific audience, and therefore was aware of who her book might reach -- and then went ahead and wrote a racist, misogynist romance that paints predatory behaviour as a good thing, tramples all over a native people's culture and normalizes abuse and pedophilia. Whether or not she didn't know it was gonna sell well is irrelevant. Also, while conflict is essential for a story, none of things I listed in my original comment are narrative conflicts in this series' story, they're just things that SMeyer genuinely doesn't see anything wrong with because she was raised in mormon culture, in which literally everything in that list is seen as normal --and thus leaked into the books.

I actually like this movie. To me, the biggest problem is Bella and Edward's relationship. I mean it is SO toxic it's kinda crazy.

Cmon it’s not that toxic... it’s crazy cause he’s like a melancholic vampire fighting against himself all the time... but toxic is when something is bad for you when the relationship was good for both of them If I would say something negative would be codependent... they can’t live without each other which is some Romeo and Juliet syndrome present in every YA but yeah... other than that it’s great

@@isamaria3356 but they are constantly gaslighting each other and their whole romance is as you said, based on codependency as well as lies, their entire attraction is pretty much superficial. Edward likes her because of her blood and because she acts differently than he expects, and she likes him due to his looks?? Oh and Edward pretty much confessed to stalking her, breaking into her house and watching her sleep... Bella is technically also being isolated, another part of a toxic relationship, as well doesn't really do anything when she isn't with Edward. So yes it is pretty toxic, while you are right that most YA novels use a similar approach to romance, it is most often more about codependancy or 'devotion' kinda thing.

You nailed it with this video. These movies aren't good in the traditional sense but given their source, they were made incredibly well. Also you totally got me with that scene of the guy thinking of his cat. I always forget that lol

That Twilight song you made would make Wayfloe so, so proud.

Its still funny to me, that when Bella has a shield thing before we find out, its basically put in as if Bella just doesn't think. Her head is empty.

The one thing that always annoyed me was everyone complaining that she wasn't smiling. People don't have to smile 24/7. If you're surrounded by monsters that wanna kill you and you're smiling I don't trust you.

@@korerietveld4797 Bella sees herself as so incredibly uninteresting and unspecial that it would in fact be quite remarkable and unique if it were actually true. It quite obviously isn't, though. And it's obtuse of her to think that literally every other person she meets is just totally wrong and doesn't know anything somehow,,or whatever. However, in the first Twilight book Bella actually sees herself as super selfless and kind of falling-on-her-own-sword for her mom, so her mom can go be happy with her new step-dad without her. Which always annoyed me. Because she says/thinks that she was doing this inspite of her mom and step-dad supposedly actually wanting to include her in their lives, and she just basically believed that she knew better than they did just how much of a bother she would be to them. And we literally hear her brain thinking thoughts about her friends that only a bad friend would have, or at best actually not even thinking about her friends at all unless they're directly in front of her and she literally doesn't have a choice. 😕😬🤨 idk man.. while I pretty much think ANY / ALL narrators are [at the very least potentially ]unreliable to some degree or another *especially* if it's told at all specifically from some particular character's pov or another, I question if that's really an excuse or contradiction of the things about Bella that are the most unlikeable. 🤔🤷‍♀️🤷‍♀️ 🙃 I haven't read Midnight Sun yet though. So ..who knows, maybe that would actually change my mind. Idk

Exactly, she was always a moody, deary character and I think her personality reflected the gloomy surroundings of Forks, hence why she was always hanging out in the woods with vampires 💀 it wouldn't make sense for her to smile all the time lol

I've read the Twilight books and while they're badly written and have shitty dialogue, the books are weirdly fascinating in a way and I always have this urge to re-read them

I never realized how aggressively blue the first Twilight movie was.
