It's not that he's hated. Fans are frustrated. There is far more to this story. Start with his manager's comments and the fall out with not only Zizou but Anchelotti before his return. Reports of him not really socializing with his teammates (lolgolf). His (apparently) poor Spanish. Couple that with an absolutely atrocious injury record and it starts to make more sense. The talent is there and we have all witnessed it, his trophy cabinet proves this. He never really turned up for Tottenham on his loan, so perhaps the odd game every couple of months is where he is at in his career.

The facts are that without Ronaldo, he never really stepped up to bring that top level performance consistency. It didn’t help with the golf either, he was being paid ALOT of money and acted like a victim sometimes

The thing is as well - he doesn't often play for Madrid these days. A decent chunk of that is due to injury - but when hes not injured he hasn't been given a decent run of games since he fell out of favour with Zidane. Its hard to blame a guy for not performing when hes left on the bench most of the time. He can still perform when he plays .... he just doesn't get the opportunity very often

I honestly didn't understand what happened at spurs. Because Bale was saying he was fit and Mourinho was saying that he wasn't and so he rarely played. But when ever he played he was one of the best on the pitch and racked up goals and assists despite rarely being given a run of games. I got the impression it was because he "doesn't train hard" like Mou wanted .... but I think thats likely because Bale manages his body and knows he needs to kind of not push 100% when it doesn't matter. Think Mou took it as lazy or unmotivated when it was really just "body management" thus him saying he wasn't fit when Bale was just like ..... this is what I have to do to be fit. I put in in games but have to manage training load.

People think that he just gave up on Real Madrid and that was that. But in reality, before all of this animosity between him and the club boiled over, Real Madrid gave up on him. Before he got shipped off to Spurs in his first 5 seasons at Real he had scored over 100 goals and 65 assists; all while playing second-fiddle to Ronaldo, and sometimes Benzema, and also dealing with injuries and different managers not playing him during that time. Came up big in many clutch moments (winning goal Copa Del Rey final, go ahead goal UCL final 2014, 2 goals in UCL final 2018), and what does he get? Nothing but hate from his own club. I don't blame him for being mad back. He just kept getting injured and couldn't stay fit as the years went on, and that weighs on a player. Some of it is his fault, but Real Madrid has far more blame; they're still mad that they're paying him 600k a week every week.

Brad, the problem here is that you are failing to look at it from the perspective of Real Madrid: this is a football club, which it’s sole purpose is to win games, win titles- that being said you must take into account why a player is not being played; because he cannot perform at the level required for a top club. The criticism from the Spanish media begun when he started to lose form due to injury problems paired with a lacklustre work ethic which prevented him from recovering and playing well. He lost his position in the first team as he simply was not good enough in training and on the pitch. Now with his childish digs at Real Madrid he accomplishes nothing and continues feeding his victim mentality instead of working on himself on and off the pitch. For three seasons now, bale has lost motivation and has been faking injuries for crucial Real Madrid games (this can be seen by the way in which he is “injured” or “Ill” one week despite being told by the medical team that he is fine, and then he plays for wales the next week) and you claim that he is being hard done by? To me and many others this is the biggest form of disrespect to the club, which let’s not forget is paying him unfathomable amounts of money regardless of his current performance and mentality issues. Brad, surely by seeing it from this perspective you can understand how his criticisms are warranted- don’t be fooled, his signing overall has been successful, but this last spell has mudded his reputation: still a fantastic player back in his prime who gave so much to the club, which gave so much to him in return.

How is getting constantly injured and only caring about your national team not going to make fans turn on him? He has spent a total of 593 days injured for Madrid, excluding his time at Spurs where he also got injured. He has a pattern of getting injured, recovering, going to Wales, playing great, then getting injured again, only to then make it in time for another international appearance. This is pretty much his injury history summed up: "The veteran forward hadn’t played a single minute for Los Blancos following that setback but he still left for international duty last week. Bale played around 45 minutes for his country, earning his 100th cap as they made easy work of Belarus, but he has picked up yet another fresh blow."
