The Story of Who Built The Titanic

"There is no danger that Titanic will sink. The boat is unsinkable and nothing but inconvenience will be suffered by the passengers."
The sinking of the Titanic, on a freezing Sunday night in April 1912, claimed more than 1500 lives. But how this state-of-the-art ocean liner came to be is also a story full of drama, encapsulating the turn of the century’s spirit of competition and drive for modernity. The booming financial world of the 1900s, rising immigration, the excitement of speed and steam, and an ever-growing transatlantic rivalry between Britain and the U.S. all played a part in the liner’s inception. And from this era emerged three men who would shape the Titanic’s journey: J.P. Morgan, an American titan of business; Thomas Ismay, the English magnate who owned the ship’s parent company; and William Pirrie, a leading British shipbuilder. Between these three men and two pivotal cities - New York and Belfast - the origins of the disaster that defined a generation can be traced…
Join Tom and Dominic as they discuss the context behind the building of RMS Titanic. From the rivalries of the transatlantic liner industry, to the tensions surrounding the Irish Home Rule movement, the story of the “unsinkable” began in a tumultuous age.

For anyone still interested in the architectural side of the Titanic story several buildings in Liverpool still remain. The White Star Building (Albion House), a striking redbrick portland stone striped building where the Titanic was registered is still there on the waterfront (now a hotel). Less than fifty yards across the road is the Cunard Building (one of the 'three graces') which also served as the company's main ticket office. Half a mile away is the Adelphi Hotel whose bedrooms were based on the White Star first class cabins, and its Sefton Suite on the Titanic dining room. Also, four miles futher north in Marine Crescent, Waterloo is Edward Smith's house, the much maligned Captain of the ship.

Atlantic wasn’t the only White Star line ship lost. There was a freighter (Naronic) which just vanished and appears to have hit an iceberg in a storm not far from where the Titanic was lost and at a similar time of year and was lost with all hands. There was another liner (Tayluer) lost on her maiden voyage off Dublin, while on the Liverpool to Melbourne run When Atlantic went down all the women and children on board were lost many trapped below decks as the ship sank by the stern and the single womens quarters and the family accommodation were rapidly flooded. Meanwhile if your ship name ended in ia you crossed the Atlantic in safety during peace time.

The Blue Riband was 'awarded' to the ship that took the shortest time to cross the Atlantic.

They had huge, colourful enamelled, mechanical/clockwork displays on ships like the Queen Mary so everyone on board, passengers and ships company both could see thier progress in the blue riband and that of other vessels and lines crossing at the same tonnage and time, also updated at intervals through telegraph and wireless, they looked like clocks combined with a race track type affair.

And all this disaster history because ultimately Mr.Murdodoch reversed the engines changing the forward momentum after going 20 some knots for the last 12 hours or so,and turn the wheel hard over. If he I think had said full ahead and then turned the wheel hard over, they probably would have cleared the berg. But that's an opinion. Thanks
