Bad luck on that brake actuator. I've had my Bolt EV for 4 1/2 years and 53,000 miles, with zero problems. Most trouble free and maintenance free car I've ever had!😊

I had this happen to me with my 2022 Bolt EV. I did try disconnecting the battery and it didn't help me. What I had to do was press the power button without my foot on the brake which turned it off, then walk 25 feet from the car with the key in hand, and wait until the count of 30. I came back to the car, stepped in, and turned the car on like normal! I was so relieved when it turned back on and shifted into gear.

Thank you for this. i’m glad your dealer and GM took care of you. My Bolt had multiple propulsion power messages and as a result I did not have a car for 5 months. I just got it back and it is making some noises, so I’m hoping it doesn’t go bad again. I love my car too and hope you have many great years with yours.

Thanks for all your information on the Bolt breakdown and how it was resolved. Kind of scary that a parking brake actuator would disable the entire car from operating. Must be kind of a closed loop electronic system. Plan on getting a Bolt EV 2LT this coming Spring 2023. I guess things happen. Good luck with your Bolt from here on out. Take care.

Look like this is a very good system; if the software allows people to drive it going to generate a lot of heat, and going to cause a lot of damage to the wheels. This kind of problem should not happen during drive because the brake actuator would not engage at the first place. This means the software took an appropriate action.

I had this exact same issue one day randomly when I went to go move my car to another parking spot at my workplace; displayed the same message and wouldn't turn off. Eventually, I opened the door, then closed it, then held the power button and it shut off, then I turned it back on and it shifted into gear without issue - hasn't happened since. It seemingly happened when I turned the car on and tried to shift into drive prior to the car being completely on (I tried putting it in drive before the screens were displaying everything)

This definitely doesn't seem like an EV problem to me, and as much as I want to say it's a GM problem, this really seems like something that just happens on any car. Things go wrong sometimes; it's not because it's an EV and it's not because it's a GM. Glad you were able to get it figured out and keep faith in your car.

Excellent point, but I'd reword it as being an automotive industry problem. WHY THE FUCK ????? and I mean WHY THE FUCK? Do we take something mechanical, simple and "fuck up" proof and turn it into a software controled system? Parking brake, shifter, glove box locking ( Teslas ) and many other useless gadgets? I have a 2023 BOLT EUV and a 2015 VOLT, where the VOLT has the old school mechanical shifter that NEVER FAILED yet.

What exactly is an "EV problem" then? These odd stalling glitches happen to a wide range of EVs. Anything so software dependent is going to have bugs similar to smartphones or PCs. And most people have no way to observe the hidden machinations of a computer.

  • @falseprogress

@@bmw803 EVs are nowhere near as simple as you're claiming, in their inner workings. There are all sorts of battery management systems designed to maximize range, etc. The general path of technology is to get more complex, like it or not. Good engineering becomes ever more critical and some EV brands will emerge as more reliable than others.

@@falseprogress Obviously. My point was taking something simple and making it more complex. A mechanical item isn't failure free , but much much easier to correct. Parking brake is an example. The worst that happens is it will eventually seize. But replacing it is much simpler and cheaper. As for EVs, I agree, they're not as simple as people think.

When I took my Bolt EUV into the dealership to get a software update to correct a message that was getting thrown; I was told that it would be a couple of days before they could get to it because only 2 of the dealership's mechanics were certified to work on EVs. They went on to explain that even for something as simple as plugging in a cable and clicking "update software" on a computer; if the mechanic was not certified to work on EVs, they are not allowed to do any work on EVs. I took my car in on a Saturday and was told that neither of the EV certified mechanics would be in until Wednesday. With the Equinox, Blazer, and Sliverado EVs due to start hitting dealership lots within the next year; I hope Chevy dealerships are making plans to get all of their mechanics trained and certified to work on EVs in the not-too-distant future.

There is usually a mechanical microswitch attached to the brake pedal assembly as well as the conventional hydraulic brake pressure switch for brake lights etc. The mechanical switch can often sense even very mild deflection and is used for power on & transmission selection while the hydraulic pressure sensor is for actual braking control. Failure of the mechanical switch will cause failure to boot up and failure to shift to/from park to drive/reverse (if already booted).

And your user group solution of disconnecting the 12 volt seems to be solution. This happened to me, too. I couldn't find anything on line about this issue. After waiting several hours for a tow truck, my husband brought me a sandwich and coffee. When he cancelled an online meeting, a friend suggested getting far enough away so the key fob couldn't communicate with the car and then waiting until it (hopefully) shut itself down. I had been inside because it was cold and some of the time of the time was apparently far enough away so that happened. I got in the car, found it was off, turned it on and shifted into drive. I took it to the dealership. They ran diagnostics on it and couldn't find anything wrong. That friend suggested putting a piece of foil in the car so if it happened again, I could wrap the key fob and wait in the car. As I am a white-haired old lady, I can only imagine what the guys in the service department would have thought had a tow truck brought them a car which started up just fine. BTW, the car had 502 miles on it.

Wait for a week to get your car back from the dealership. Walk away and wait until it shuts off and re-boots. Wait until the car fully "boots up" before putting it in gear. The take away for me is the word "wait". So I'll WAIT for several years more before buying an electric car if ever.

So I unplugged The battery three times on the final time I waited over 45 minutes reconnected my battery and guess what everything work great check the voltage on my battery it was at 12 volts. But I had to go to California the next day from Las Vegas so what did I do I went over to the Chevy dealer picked up a battery I didn't have time to put it in drove all the way to California with the old battery and I'm talking to you right now it's still working great but I'm still going to put in the new battery because of the voltage that I saw under 10 volts. I saw this video months ago and a few days ago my brother’s 2022 Bolt EV started doing this without the service engine light. He was stranded several hours. GM’s “Concierge” roadside service sent for a tow truck but couldn’t find one and called back to say they would send one the next morning. Of course, it wasn’t doing it by then so he had to cancel the tow. OnStar couldn’t tell him what was wrong either. Dealer couldn’t find anything wrong. No codes. We did try disconnecting the battery. A quick remove and reinstall didn’t work. A 15 minute removal didn’t work. An hour and a half removal didn’t work, and we took the fob to the other side of town for that one. We tried one more time after vacuuming and washing the car and it just suddenly started working. What gets me is that the dealers don’t already know about this issue even after your experience. It should be in their database. They should also prioritize the vehicles since they need to catch it in the act. Also, the software should have been updated to throw a code when the parking actuator times out if that’s really what causes this. There is no excuse for GM after you have contacted them. Also, there no excuse for a problem like this preventing you from turning it off. That’s a logic problem that absolutely must be fixed.

I’ve seen electric parking brakes in a Honda Civic (gas) vehicle and Tesla has them. Same with transmission shifters - modern gas vehicles now use electronic transmission shifters (even the ones with a shift lever/knob that looks old style).

I was driving the Bolt in very slow traffic with lots of stops and starts during hot weather, so I believe that to be the culprit. It never tripped the code since, either.

not totally true mine did that to me , i had car running and went inside fast food joint to pick up my food and when i came out i had that issue. Next time it happened the car was off , went for a walk at the park came back tried to start the car same issue. Then took photo of error , made appointment at dealership ( gave them the bulletin number for the supposed fix worked after reprogrammed. Few weeks later guess what ta da same dang thing, so i opened drivers door rolled down window . shut door and car was fine. This has happened twice since software update so now its go to car hope that issue does not pop up drive car. I also use the parking break from time to time and hold foot on brake well before trying to start car so i know its not that. Hopefully this does not become a frequent issue because i have already had others like bad window regulator, front end noise coming from car in cold weather ( fixed that ) now have wind noise from drivers side window at highway speeds ( i know its bad seal around window on outside of car ) other than that car is fun to drive . now its winter time in the midwest hope no more gremlins show up.

Own a 2022 and 2023 Bolt , both had major issues within the first 2000 miles. The 2022 had the thrust issue error that ended up being towed in. My 2023, while using Super Cruise threw an error, took it to the dealership, and GM took the 2023 away due to a failure in the brake module system. Like you TACS got involved and they were going back and forth for a week. In my issue, it was a loose connector in the front camera that caused the error to be thrown. After contacting GM corporate, they admitted that dealerships do not have enough EV certified reps. Another error thrown by the same car, EV concierge could not find any openings for service for 3 weeks. Had to go 120 miles away to get service. within the 5 day threshold OnStar gave me for the error. My frustration is that this is a 6 year old model of the car, the bugs should be out by now.

Gotta give GM credit for how they handled the Bolt battery recall. I think the dealerships have only one guy trained to work on EVs. They have a lot more monkeys to service I.C.E. vehicles. So the built in queue for EV repairs is already longer. My personal experience with a 2017 Bolt recall & a service camera in the shop that I could watch.

I currently have a noise coming from the front end of the car. I heard it 2 weeks from when I pulled out of the dealership. A month into owning the car, we brought it in to be checked. A field technician was dispatched to check out the car because the techs said they haven't dealt with this problem before. I'm not sure I'm wording this right, but was told there could be extra mental rubbing against each other so when it turns it's causing some thump thump thump noise. I was advised to drive it for 2,000 miles and bring it in if it doesn't work. Well, it didn't work and I'll have to bring it in again. I've only had this 2022 bolt for 2 months now. The function of the car is fine but you hear this slight thumping noise while driving. If I turn up the music I can drown it out. Hope they fix it soon, I love my bolt =)

This happened to my 2017 Bolt a few years ago. I had been plugged into a suspect fast charger, and the car apparently got confused when it came time to disconnect the charger. It got stuck in run mode and neutral with a warning to take it to the dealer. I had a socket set with me, so before calling for a tow truck, I decided to remove a 12v battery connection for a few minutes. Upon hooking the battery back up, the car ran just fine, and it has never done it again. Perhaps the shift out of park happened too soon, and the vehicle couldn’t handle multiple things to process when it wasn’t ready? Nikki Gordon Bloomfield of Transport Evolved (YT) had a situation a couple of years ago in her 2017 Bolt where one of the brakes locked up, and she had to have it dragged onto a flatbed.

Thanks for the posting. I have been driving a Bolt for more than three years. It was mostly pleasant experience. I do agree that it appears GM dealership has some worker training to do. Last time the car needs software upgrade, the service coordinator told me that she had only one "Bolt tech" and I had to wait for two weeks. If the car is broken, that could be a problem.

Thanks for this level of detail. My wife just called me this morning saying that she wasn't able to start our EUV with the "conditions not correct for shift". I was able to talk her through the power off with the foot off the brake and then power back on (which worked) but I'm really glad to know your process in case it happens again. Our EUV is exactly 2 months old with about 2600 miles on it, so it is disappointing to have an error already. I work in IT... "recalibrate the system" sounds a whole lot like some softer way of saying "we did a factory reset, twice", or some other kind of BS answer that ultimately means "We don't know why it happened or how it got fixed, but it seems to be working now". Has this fix "stuck"? Have you had any other issues or needed additional fixes since this happened last October?

Based on what I've heard about the ADS software "recall", that was one of the symptoms. I don't know if the actuator stopped you or not -- it was obviously bad -- but I think the software update resolved the core issue. I had my 2019 Bolt updated as soon as I could, before I ran into problems, so it's anyone's guess at this point. Let us know if it happens again!

What you experienced is the half-assed diagnostics system that Chevy (LG) implemented on this vehicle. There's zero chance that you would not get faults set after an EPB or brake system malfunction. This is similar to the previous model's penchant for turning itself off while driving on the freeway because the system became spooked by a battery issue. The diagnostics system was lacking inhibitions at that time and is probably lacking inhibitions in your case. It all boils down to Chevy being Chevy (cheap) and sticking LG with the development of this vehicle. All in all, it's a great little car. I've owned two and really liked driving them. However, you are still dealing with Chevy. Next time, just pull the negative and be done with it.

They kept my car for another week until they decided I needed a software update and now I'm not getting my 259 miles of range. Since it's a 2022 I won't get my 259 miles of range anymore until the 2017-2019 models get there batteries fixed. Perfect example of why I don't like cars that are so heavily computerized. They see everything in absolutes. Either on or off. If something isn't perfect it stops the whole system from functioning properly. Ridiculous to immobilize a car just because a parking brake won't fully disengage.

I have a question about the efficiency: Is your 3.7 mi/kw-hr representative of mostly freeway driving? Does the car do better, maybe 6~7 mi/kw-hr, on city streets at slower speeds? Did you ever find out exactly what the fault was?

It's more than that actually, it's a disgrace. It's easy to replace if you know how and have plastic tool. Since if you break the tab it's now a 25 to 30 bux to replace the plastic housing. I have not replaced any other light bulb yet. As a side note I don't like the rear lights on the newer bolts. Edited: I will replace the cargo light with LED as well.
