As an American, I don't dispute the sugar problem here- I myself don't have much of a sweet tooth but it's pretty bad, they put "hidden" sugars in things like chain pizza doughs and pizza sauces so kids secretly like it better and say "Mom we want CHUCK E CHEESE pizza!!!" - because it's actually been sweetened - but we might have an even bigger salt problem... One can of grocery-store-purchased Soup, one packet of Ramen noodles, one 'meal' at any fast-food place, that all has more sodium than you're supposed to have in a day or even two ... and the hard part is trying to fit a "snack" in ... even those little "Single-Serving" packets of chips (you call them crisps) have more sodium than you're supposed to eat for an entire meal ... You can be a totally-normal person, "hey want a snack while we watch the game? I'll slice up some Cheese & Crackers..." ... Yeah great that's more salt than we're supposed to eat all day ... Honestly as bad as the drug problems are across the world, Salt is even worse ... Someone is laughing their asses off to the bank on the money they're making supplying us Americans with our Daily Sodium.

@@LivingTheorem So I am in the wine and spirits business and I one time got sent a packet about US Gov't Food regulations (on accident I am sure) - and it explained how things like fruit cocktail or mixed fruit (cans or single-serve plastic packs for kids, whatever) - they can be labeled "No Sugar Added!" - when in fact a SIGNIFICANT AMOUNT of sugar was directly added, because it would not be more sugar than if they packed it in a very-highly-sugared-'Naturally-Occurring' fruit juice or syrup - it was eye-opening ... almost total and complete lying on the package ... "No Sugar Added!" - when they actually in fact added a fucking shitload of extra sugar, but marketing allows taking advantage of obscure rules & regulations in the area of technicalities ... Total BS ... just like you can drink a fruit juice "cocktail" that doesn't actually have any of the actual fruit you thought you were buying, and that's totally legal.

I, accompanied by a gentleman named Barry H., rebuilt the Vegemite filling machine at Kraft Foods in Otahuhu, NZ. It was a disgusting job, but an ingenious device. After cleaning, dismantling and working out the pneumatic circuits, we got it up and running again, and working better than ever before. This was in 1983, from memory. It was a truly awful machine, with baked-on caramel icky stuff, but we got it up and running. I agree, Marmite is disgustingly sweet. It was a fiendish machine, and surprising that it had worked so well for all those years, with zero maintenance. Good one, Enots and Martonair.

Marmite is still popular in NZ because it’s made in Christchurch. It got to the point there was a shortage post earthquakes forced the plant to close for repairs and a black (geddit) market for the spread popped up overnight. Right now, I’m eating Vegemite flavoured pretzel crisps that were made in Romania. Surely it would be cheaper to make them in Australia than send Vegemite over there and back.

Didn't taste it until adolescence when I saw my first jar in an international foods store. So I went for it. I wasn't put on at first, until I learned the simplest and correct way to eat it years later - on buttered toast. Cheese if available, but if that's too heavy, can't go wrong with butter and bread. The breakfast and midnight snack that hasn't failed me yet. Now please tell me a cheesy scroll, Vegemite optional, is the savory answer to Cinnabon. That is a dream come true.

In Europe, there is also Cenovis(Sweden) and Vitam-R (Germany) that I know of. Marmite also has a factory in South Africa and I'm curious if that marmite tastes the same as the UK produced spread. Still, my all round favourite is Vegemite, the spread that I grew up on. Don't for get you can use Vegemite to flavour soups and stews, and also mix with hot water as a convalescent drink. What I learned: Leibig process, Callister, onion and celery extracts.Fascinating.

GREAT video. Thanks for the information! I read years ago in the Wall Street Journal it's basically beer scum. lol. I still love it! But I like my butter hard with a smear of Vegemite on top so I let my toast cool down for a couple of minutes.

The secret is the very thin spread, also a diet including vegemite discourages sandflies from biting. Does something (good?) to the blood.

I'm an American and I've heard of Vegemite, and have always been keen to try it, but after watching this video, not only do I want to try it, but I'd probably bet $$$ that I absolutely love it, based on its description! I love parmesean cheese, and even though it's not parmesean-flavored, they say it has that same type of deep, savory taste. I've got to order this stuff online! I reckon I may become a regular customer!

Well you can buy it at an import food store if your city has one. Interestingly enough marmite is sold at every major grocery store in the US, but vegemite is much harder to find. For whatever reason my grocery store used to sell marmite and vegemite, but now they only sell marmite. Vegemite is better honestly.

^ Vegemite is better lol. I'd say people who like onion or spicey foods would appreciate Vegemite.. it is strong in flavour. Salty indeed. I still don't know what is in it but I've never not had a jar of Vegemite handy. It is a life saver and they last a long time. I never put mine in the fridge. Some people do, I keep mine in the pantry. I love you Vegemite :)
