The Story of The Samaritan Woman at the Well Explained

The story of Jesus encounter with the Samaritan woman at the well is a profound passage. Jesus didn't truly need anything from this woman. In fact, he came to take her shame and guilt in exchange for righteousness.
In this message from Pastor Tyson Coughlin, we take a deep look at this story and its explanation of grace and redemption for all those who believe and are willing to "give up their cup."

Heard this story before from a preacher and he painted a beautiful picture of the well. He said, a well can only produce one thing. And when we dip our bucket into the well, we will only receive the same thing. So the question is, what is the well in your life? God wants to be that well, he wants you to drink from him! Great sermon brother!

I have recently been desperately trying to mend my relationship with God and it has been hard. The last 5 minutes of this sermon really touched my heart and spirit that I started bursting out crying. I have rejected God for the past 5 years. Rejected my parents and friends offers to go to church because I was deeply rooted in my pain and helplessness. I selfishly claimed that I knew what was the best for me and that I was done listening to God. I remember vividly the day I yelled at the Lord on Christmas Eve, and rejected him when I was 15. I struggled the past 2 years in coming to God's feet because I was afraid He would reject me this time. But I see that Jesus loved us so much that he asked for our sins in exchange for his infinite. I am so grateful and touched by this sermon. Thank you so much.

So awesome! Loved the cultural background of the Samaritans and the Jews that you included. That said, I think you forgot one of the most important parts of this sermon, John 4: 4: "Now he had to go through Samaria." The irony is, Jesus never had to pass through Samaria, in fact, it would've been easier for him to take the long way around, he chose to. Historically Rabbi's and religious men took a long way around to avoid the area. Yet Jesus took the direct route, straight through Galilee. For doing so, he was questioned and mocked by Samaritans, Jews, and disciples alike. In truth, he could've avoided the area altogether. But had he avoid Samaria they never would have heard the gospel and would've remained dead in their sin. Thus Jesus HAD to go through Samaria! This is one of my favorite bible verses in regards to the grace of God and this is the foundation of evangelism. As a Christian from the Northeast (US), sometimes I feel like Jesus in Samaria. I see a broken culture all around me and question why I'm still here. I'd rather just move back to the Southeast, where the word of God is known. The answer, of course, is because Jesus had to pass through Samaria.

The Samaritan woman’s life was one of tragedy, not scandal. There are reasons other than sin that could cause multiple marriages, and the man she lived with was not her husband. This doesn’t equate to an adulterous situation, and Jesus doesn’t allude to one. He never tells her to stop sinning as he did with other people. In the Greek it reads that “the man who has you” .....this could be a relative actually. She could also have been a slave. The men of the town listened to her...would they have listened to an outcast? This idea that she was a wretched adulterous is not actually shown in this passage, and no early church father taught that she was. This was a life of tragedy not scandal...and yes Jesus wanted her worship...not her water.

Ann Lowry The majority of ppl wouldn’t even question if there could be an alternative interpretation. As diligent believers we have to always rely on God for guidance through His Spirit. We can neither prove or disprove either interpretation, so the lesson is for us the be aware of the possibility of negative indoctrination, & constantly seek God’s truth.

Great sermon! At midnight, when I couldn’t sleep because the life I have been living, this is the kind of living water that I was so thirsty for that kept me awake. A powerful message, though not biblically regarding adultery, the principle remains the same never the less. I am curious though, another commenter below said she did not sin, however the women herself in her testimony said “this man as spoken and told me everything I have done” it does seem that there is either a burden of guilt or open admitting to the public what was already known about her regardless the transgression. Again the point in proven God does not care the reason for your shame or your guilt. He wants you heart. “Give to me all of you that YOU know, and I will give to you all of you that you DON’T know” -YHWH

To me personally, you stopped me in my tracks when you said, "we are living in rebellion to God!!" What you said, and this message I received has had profound impact! I found myself digging into the past for answers in the old Sumerian Clay Tablets, instead of the Bible!! I have been down the esoteric rabbit hole, even reading the tablets of Thoth the trickster who's son was pan!! The horned demon.. But the answers were all along in Christ, who spoke to the woman at the well, telling her they know not who they serve!! People today and Hollywood are glorifying the Occult, the Greek gods and Egyptian gods, who were all along the fallen Angel's and rebels to God... They worshipped the fallen Angel's on Mount Hermon!!! All of these things have been revealed to me, and it's when I found out that thoth preached of his ancient serpent knowledge that I began to understand it all!!! I see many misled that Thoth was righteous, and good.. When in fact it is the opposite! This is the knowledge of Satan, the knowledge that led mankind to fal from the beginning.

At this time in history only men could divorce a woman therefore she was abandoned 5 times and the current one wouldn't even honor her with a marriage - this is why Jesus did not condemn her He was piercing deeply into her soul and pain.

The Woman at the Well is a confrontation between the complete Word of GOD (Jesus atop the well of David) and the Sun god worshiping, human sacrificing, self destructive system that "married" the previous five kingdoms (Egypt {remember RA the Sun god}, Assyria, Babylon, Persia, and Greece), referred to in this story as the first 5 husbands. The woman was not yet married to the 6th husband (the Roman Empire), which happens later around 350 AD. All of the adjectives and adverbs in this event add to and clarify this.

Great message you were so close to what truly was happening. Have you ever thought perhaps the reason why everyone came was because she was already preaching about the Messiah? Maybe the reason why the men were divorcing her is because she spoke in public. That was very frowned upon but she did it anyway and the men divorced her. Accept perhaps the last guy she is with. Just a thought.
