The Story of Piper (The Only Known Case with her Rare Genetics)
Piper is a nonspeaking child with two rare genetic conditions. She has learned to communicate by humming songs that are relevant to her mood. For example, when Piper is joyful she hums, "If You're Happy and You Know It". Piper's family wants others to know that her form of communication is valid.

Ya know, I was waiting for this comment. I’m musically inclined in terms of instruments, theory, and was even the drum major (conductor) of my high school’s large competitive field marching band-but my dad discouraged me from majoring in music and psychology when I expressed that music therapy was my target career. No joke. It doesn’t really matter considering I ended up becoming a mom twice over while pursuing a degree and I chose to prioritize my daughters over my psych major, but I really needed to see someone comment on music therapy. That was my very first thought and I was so thoroughly intrigued and watched the entire video in full. You’re an inspiration who is very far out of reach, but I’m soooo grateful 12 years later just to see that I wasn’t silly for wanting to double major for music therapy. Although my goal is sooo far out of reach by now, I needed justification in knowing that music therapists really ARE out there and really do feel fulfilled the way I would have! I hope you are happily onto the next stage in your life and that the lives you touched fulfilled you the way your single comment fulfilled me-and I’m glad someone else likely got goosebumps for the same reason I did when this video touched me!

Just a quick story: I worked at Children's Hospital for many years, and we had a child who was a "frequent flyer", (a child who had been a patient on our unit many times) He had a deficit disorder, and was mentally deficient, but he communicated with everyone through music! His favorite song was "Jeremiah was a Bullfrog", and no matter what his mood was, as soon as he heard that song, he would stop what he was doing and immediately start clapping in time and humming with the music. I always felt like that just seemed to be a special song for a lot of special needs children. Kind of a nice memory for me. thank you for sharing yourself with these children and their families, and then sharing your videos with us! Much love... 👍🥰
The way she stared into the guitar as he played was an amazing moment. No words spoken, just vibes.

Using music for communication is a very valuable method! I find myself as an autistic person bursting into songs that fit my mood or current actions and finding the perfect lyrics for a situation is very rewarding and reassuring. I'm glad Piper has found her way of communicating through music
Thank you Chris for sharing a glimpse of our family with the people on your channel, and for the time and energy you put into each video. We found encouragement early on in Piper's diagnosis by watching your interviews, and being on the opposite side of things was a great opportunity. You are a talented guitar player, and Piper enjoyed her time with to you! You were kind, patient, and flexible. Which is just what most people need. Thank you to our friends, family, teachers, church, and medical team who have played roles in our daily lives. For supporting and encouraging us on our worst days. Thank you to the online community who has commented or engaged with the video. Your kind words, prayers, and advice have been well received and shared along to our children. Time is a valuable thing that you can't get back, and it was a blessing to share our story with you all. We pray it encourages you on hard days, in hard places. Thank you to our Lord Jesus for giving us a hope and a future. The Lord has been our firm foundation through the storms. The humming she did in the first 10 seconds was the "are you sleeping, are you sleeping, brother John?" Nursery ryhme. She uses that song when she is tired or wants to know if others are awake in the house. Right before Chris showed up, Piper was napping. So in hindsight it makes sense that she was humming that song. She was still waking up from her nap.

Words escape me to describe the beautiful experience this video captures. Breathtaking... You can see through her facial expressions and eyes....everything within her lights up, makes sense, and falls into place....once the music starts. The way she claps her hands to the beat....between claps she seems to feel the tempo, the way she "scrunches and scrubs" her hands between claps. That's her "feeling" the beat. One of the best videos, and best experiences I've ever had on youtube. Thank you to everyone who made this video and experience possible.

I'm watching the part where the Piper ans the dad are taping in tempo, and I really appreciated what that small calming gesture meant in that instance. It made me realize that sometimes, to be there for someone is just to be besides them, in sync with them and what they are feeling. No words are needed. Just being in sync with one another. And considering that a lot of parents, especially fathers, have difficulty doing that with their kids, It really moved me. Piper has obviously good caring parents and a great sister. She listens so tentatively to the music and you can really tell she understand the rhythms and tries to copy as well which is great :) I’ve noticed people with disabilities tend to have a deeper appreciation for music. When I was younger and nonverbal I used music to help myself
It was so touching when Piper was humming "If You're Happy and You Know It" when her sister was sitting next to her. Such a tender yet clear expression of love. It brought me to tears.

This is so cool. I work at a medical daycare, and several of the kids (especially the babies) really respond to singing. I love to sing, so it’s fun for me. I’ve also learned which kids enjoy songs with gestures more (like the Itsy Bitsy Spider). Some of the kids have autism, some have neurological disorders, some have genetic disorders. It’s great to see how different kids respond.

Same. I'm ashamed to admit it but I used to wonder "how do children who can speak communicate aren't they so sad" I never thought badly of them but thought they must be sad. Chris has shown me that there's so many ways to communicate and that they're anything but sad or "trapped" like the media will make you think. Its changing now but I grew up when autistic children who couldn't speak were described as "trapped in their own world" thankfully through both KZread and meeting non verbal autistic children (my best friend from childhood has a non verbal son) I've learned that is not true at all.
The way she lit up when you were playing was magical !
About 17 seconds in I was understanding just how amazing and loving her parents are. Piper is incredibly intelligent, aware and intuitive. Pretty sure she got those traits from her parents... I sat here stunned, mouth hanging and open and everything, watching her pick up on the various beats. She speaks through song, kinda like Bumblebee. It's wicked creative. Chris you are someone who is so rare that people like you are one in a million. You have impacted so many people in so many ways. I listen to the conversations and content of the video. But what I love to see is how these parents and families, slightly guarded in the beginning, become relaxed, they Even laugh after a bit. The best part of all these videos though, is watching the kids. You bring them completely out if their shells!!!!! Kids can sense things about people that i believe as we grow up we become desensitized to. They are special and they can sense that you are too. Thank you for the difference you continue to make. ❤
This might be the most precious family you have interviewed yet. Wow. I am in awe of this family.
Piper’s precious & Millianna is such a loving, giving baby sister. She’s adorable! She needs a ukulele to play for her sis. The family is such a blessing.
This one is very special. You used her language to reach her and it is an absolutely beautiful thing to see thank you so much.
Wow!! When he started playing faster and she adjusted her rhythm to match his, it’s amazing because she picked up the sort of off-tempo beat immediately and perfectly. What an awesome, amazing child!❤
Beautiful video and what a SPECIAL sister and parents, so sweet. Thank you Chris for the wonderful work you do. You are very special indeed! ❤
By far, the COOLEST episode on this channel! Thank you to her amazing family for sharing Piper with us!! The little sister is an absolute star too! 🎉
What a unique child Piper is. She is SO wonderful 🥹 And Milliana is an angel. I cried when she said "I'm happy for her" 😭❤
