It felt like being on the edge of a ginormous nuclear reactor that was about to explode. The noise was not deafening, but it was so loud that made your heart beat crazy. it was probably the tensest moment (45 minutes) in my life!!! On the edge of Armagedon. ...and when earthquake hit, our Tanzanian guides screamed and ran the steep slope like there's no tomorrow. A day to remember.

Wow this is such a change from the peaceful effusive summit of years past. Is there more real magma coming into the volcano vs the carbonotie melting on its way up?

It seems to be cyclical. The similar violent eruption to the one in 2008 also occurred in 1967.
3:51 Oh ok so more salisic magma took over vs the carbonitite. Thats a shame I really enjoyed the eruption style of the old volcano. I really wanted to see the lava at night with the recent more sensitive sensors on digital cameras.
