I remember doing this thing with my local library that said we could all play minecraft and we played this. Before this finding out what minecraft was and begging my mom to get it for me. But the 20 ish dollars then was a lot for a game for us. So finding any way to play it was such a joy. Once this got shut down I got so sad but I loved every second of it. and after that you have to plug the red wire into the socket to make sure the engine boots at launch. Wrap the green wire around it's coil that sits directly beside the A button. After you put the back shell on, place the battery in the slot. Screw the Vr26 Jeeper back up and press the reset button. If everything worked according to plan you're device should show a thumbs up sprite. Plug the HDMI port into a monitor and wait three seconds. If it boots up on TV your in the good side. I remember playing on this website when I was 9-10. I remember downloading all types of different free versions on my family’s desktop. Life and the internet was so much simpler back then.
This website was my first exposure to mc back in senior highschool.. kids were playing it in the school library I feel like the free version probably did immensely good for the game in gaining popularity
Reminds me of that one time, when my parents bought me the game, but my friends were still pirating. So they asked me to send them the game files, turns out you already had to have a mojang account to play the full version, so all of them though the demo for 3 in-game days was something like "Build the best thing you can within the time limit, and if we like it, you get to play multiplayer"

Eagle craft is a pirated version of Minecraft that still works for this day
Gosh, I forgot all about how Minecraft used to be a game you could play in-browser...it's been like 10 years, and java plugins on browsers has only been gone for like 3 years...I forgot all about that stuff. I also laugh, because I initially was given a SP Minecraft file back in high school (I think it was just a paid version my buddy bought, but just gave me the game file)...and that was the only way (at first) I was able to play Minecraft. I would eventually buy the full game and make an account when Mojang finally released the Minecraft full-game cards at the stores, and I immediately snagged one (because it was also cheaper at that point...the original price was steep for the lack of content at the time). Paid 26 bucks for it...one of the best 26 bucks I've ever spent. Cheers. Cool vid. Brought back great memories.
If only creators were as chill as Notch, I'd like to pirate a game and challenge them to a match of Halo 3 instead.

i mean it's probably due to the times and how Minecraft wasn't that big of a game as it is now, but it's kinda nice knowing that creators of games were actual gamers and not y'know....just moneymakers. I imagine now there's a big email system where Jeb's emails are first checked to see relevancy and importance before they're sent to the big man himself and Jeb probably doesn't actually game so we'll probably never see this happen again. Tho challenging Notch is definitely still an option of course

This is how me and all my buddies used to play in elementary school. I’ll never forget; my 5th grade teacher had a “ticket” system where you got 1 ticket if you did something good/got a question right. Me and the guys started selling gum, 1 stick for one ticket. By the end of the year, we saved up enough to buy 1 full week of visits to the computer lab, 1:30-2:30, and we’d play on this site. Thanks for bringing back the memories man

The site didn't host any data. It used Mojang's servers, just like a legitimate game client. On Reddit, Notch confirmed that the site was not illegal or against the TOS explicitly. Copyright wasn't a factor because no copyrighted work was being hosted. I'm sure the reason for Minecraft's updated terms of service, along with requiring you to accept the terms when hosting a server, was partially inspired by this debacle. I believe that the reason why it was not considered illegal was due to the fact that the site was not distributing anything that was copyrighted. I'm pretty sure that it downloaded the legitimate client from Mojang's servers and just tricked it into thinking that the user had a valid login. The client, just being a simple launcher that downloaded the actual game files from the Mojang servers, meant that there was no copyrighted information or data being hosted. The files were only downloaded upon the initial launch, and during any subsequent updates. The game files were stored on your machine after being downloaded from the servers, so it's not like the data had to be re-downloaded every time. Still, Minecraft for Free accounted for more than 10% of Mojang's server traffic, from what I remember Dylan telling me about the cease and desist email.

As much as I get Mojang not wanting their game to be pirated for free. If I didn't play this pirated version as a kid I would have never gotten into Minecraft. Every bit of money that I ever gave Mojang for Minecraft and various adjacent products can be traced back to me playing this pirated version. I get pirating is bad. But giving free access to something can open the door to more money down the road. It's not just a loss for them.

I still remember when I discovered you could install forge on top of the minecraft demo and all the demo limitations would be removed (except for multiplayer support).
Wow. Crazy how this situation reminded of 12 year old me around 2012 not knowing any better. Downloading a ‘free’ version of Minecraft was how I got introduced to the game. I remembered playing it a couple of years, and it would automatically update. But when the update with the horses first came out, I couldn’t play it unless I had the actual game. It would also stop updating too. So I just stopped playing. I only started playing Minecraft again last year. This time, bought it on my own. I felt like I’ve missed out a lot! But I’m remembering to love playing it again!
Used to play this during IT class in primary chool. Didnt take to long till a majority of my class played together. I vaguely remember being able to type already existing usernames, which came with downloaded skins. Good times.

This is how I first played Minecraft! I didn't realise at the time that it wasn't official, so I had a bunch of fun with it.
