Well it's a German program and they are even more lazier than the English if it comes to languages. I've seen this on German Television a few years ago. With out the English bits. Guessing you're British, why do you call him by his french name and not Charles the main. In Dutch he's called Karel de grote in German it would be Karl dem große.

French people are mostly Celts that were conquered by the Romans, and subsequently took up large parts of Roman culture, including the Latin language (which gradually evolved into French). Franks were a Germanic tribe, their modern descendents are the Dutch, Flemish and Western Germans.

Eginhart , Einhart wrote that Carolus Magnus was a head taller than others around him, had a high pitched voice, a small paunch, many concubines and could not read or write. At the entrance of Saint Peters Basilica is a flat floor stone upon which he was crowned. Its diametre is about one metre and came to ancient Rome from Egypt. He was the greatest of all European medieval kings, about a thousand of them. Saint John Paul II named him Pater Europae.

When you consider the sheer size of the kingdom which Charlemagne is ruling over and the millions of subjects governed, can we really believe that a brief exchange with his mother would convert him from a 'I want more' conquering warlord, into a non-violent Christian whose list of titles now includes Godfather? (Incidentally, does this claim, from a hierarchical perspective, elevate him OVER God?) Surely the complexities of ruling a diverse multinational empire means events cannot have occurred in the 'overly simple' explanation offered by historians?

Blessed Jerome has written about the ancient kings of the Franks, whose story was first told by the poet Virgil: their first king was Priam and, after Troy was captured by trickery, they departed. Afterwards they had as king Friga, then they split into two parts, the first going into Macedonia, the second group, which left Asia with Friga were called the Frigii, settled on the banks of the Danube and the Ocean Sea. Again splitting into, two groups, half of them entered Europe with their king Francio. After crossing Europe with their wives and children they occupied the banks of the Rhine and not far from the Rhine began to build the city of "Troy" (Colonia Traiana-Xanten). - Fredegar, Chronicle of Fredegar (7th c. CE)[14]

It was Holy, Roman and an Empire at one point and I'm sad you even mention this quote by Voltaire from the late stages of it's existing. It existed nearly 1000 years, only few empires could beat this. That's one of the dumbest quotes. The HRE held Rome at the beginning (that's why the name Roman) and they saw themselves as the successor of the Romans, the king/ emporer got crowned by the pope and was the defender of christianity (that's why Holy, but also only really in the beginning stages) and it was definitly and empire (even up till it's end, but you could say the kings and dukes just did their own stuff. Yes sometimes they followed the orders of the emporer, but sometimes they didn't, especially after the reformation and the thirty years war, the power of the emporer was minimal (atleast as an emporer, the emporer had full authority about the place he ruled as king or duke)). But all emporers had power struggle, just look at Great Britain or the Mongols.

@@serpentsepia6638 Charlemagne was just one example of a Christian King using "Roman tactics" against his enemies. In 146 bc the Romans put to the sword 22,000 Corinthian men after they'd captured the city. Christianity became a political tool after Constantine adopted it as the religion of Rome. During the 30 years war in the 17th century when cities that had rebelled and evicted the priests and Catholic officials were recaptured the people were driven out to die in the countryside and the cities were repopulated with those of "true faith".

@@jordanpeters3746 The Thirty Years' War was a series of wars in Central Europe between 1618 and 1648 lasting for thirty years. The major causes of the Thirty Years' War were the fragmentation of the Holy Roman Empire, the lack of real power held by the Holy Roman Emperor, and the stark religious divide between Protestants and Catholics. The war was sparked by a revolt by Protestant nobles against the Catholic Hapsburg king, Ferdinand. It remains one of the longest and most brutal wars in human history, with more than 8 million casualties resulting from military battles as well as from the famine and disease caused by the conflict. The Peace of Westphalia, concluded in 1648 in Münster (Germany), ended the Thirty Years' War, which started with an anti-Habsburg revolt in Bohemia in 1618 but became an entanglement of different conflicts concerning the constitution of the Holy Roman Empire, religion, and the state system of Europe. As a result of the Treaty of Westphalia, the Netherlands gained independence from Spain, Sweden gained control of the Baltic and France was acknowledged as the preeminent Western power. The power of the Holy Roman Emperor was broken and the German states were again able to determine the religion of their lands.

@@jordanpeters3746 "Charlemagne was just one example of a Christian King using "Roman tactics" against his enemies. In 146 bc the Romans put to the sword 22,000 Corinthian men" Not true, this was not a Roman tactic but a tactic of all cultures both in antiquities and during the medieval periods. Case in point: *Notably, Alexander pronounced this sentence on the city of Tyre which had been an island. Tyre assumed, as a frigging island, it could ignore Alexander’s demand of the keys to the city.* *Not so. He built a causeway to the island, crucified all the men and enslaved the women. Alexander, sacker of Tyre - this is roughly 320bc.* And... *In 480 BC, Persian forces led by King Xerxes I, burned down the city of Athens, as well as the Acropolis, in what is called “the Persian Destruction of Athens.” The destruction of the great city took place during the Persian Wars, a series of conflicts which began in 499 BC and lasted until 449 BC.* And... *One of those sources is the Bible's Old Testament, which suggests a grisly end for many Canaanites: After the Israelites' exodus from Egypt, God ordered them to destroy Canaan and its people.*
