I had always assumed that rather than it being a mistake when Bodhi says the Shadow Thieves bartered with Irenicus to have him capture you, that she was simply lying. It would be in character for her to say that to try and frame the tasks you just did for her as being for your benefit as well (i.e. revenge) rather than what would otherwise be the most logical in-universe exploitation (that she's exploiting you in your time of need to win her gang war). A way to make it look like you're both in this together as victims.

@Mortismal Gaming Just as fyi, I did notice you mentioning in the end there that if you ascend to godhood you become a god of murder, but there is another ending as well, if you play a good character and ascend you become a good deity instead of god of murder. This is what I did in my last playthrough.

I played both of these games when I was a kid, and honestly remembered so little of it other than "Minsc was funny and there was a hamster named Boo". I went through your "How to" guide on the OG game and really tried to give it a fair shake, but I think I just arrived to the party too late, without the benefit of any nostalgia goggles or previous experience to anchor me, and couldn't come to grips with the visual presentation, navigation, and totally unbalanced combat (it was either frustrating hard or mindnumbingly easy, but I couldn't find a happy medium). But I really wanted to know the story, especially to get up to speed on BG3, and this is perfect.

1.Paying the vampires is the best option, because you get to destroy both guilds, which is both more exp, and lore-wise you clear the city of filth. 2. Getting the bag of holding from the bodhi maze is a must, and not getting it will make the game a lot more tedious. 3. Imoen is actually amazing, just her personality might be a tad annoying to some.

Always found it really annoying that BGII retcons whatever you did in terms of developing Imoen in BGI, and also throws in the conceit of her being a Bhaal spawn too. Reminds me of how Princess Leia goes from being Luke's love interest to his sister, and Vader becomes his father in Episode V, when clearly neither was planned during Episode IV.

For those interested in the specifics, the actual "canon" of the tabletop game is sort of disappointing in a way for different reasons. Basically the actual Canon module for D&D is that another bhaal spawn attempts to assassinate Abdel while he is one of the Dukes of Baldur's gate and, regardless of the outcome, the victor of that fight basically explodes into an Avatar of Bhaal, which either is slain the players of the module or is left to escape and presumably wreck havoc on the world. Either way, Bhaal basically shortly after reascends to godhood. So yeah, kind of worse than the videogame version, tbh.

Not sure if I should bother finishing this game or not. When they announced BG3 I forced myself to finish BG1 after countless tries, and I really don't enjoy the gameplay of BG2, the realtime combat is a mess and I don't know the rules well enough to play, so I just keep dying and reloading or lowering the difficulty. Between the overpowered mage enemies, the trolls that can only be killed by specific fire attacks ( they say acid works too, but Melf's acid arrow never works on them ), the cowled mages arresting me when I forget that I can't use spells in the city ( awful mechanic here, it makes my Cleric useless, and Jaheira and the other mage girl too ), the random encounters that just wreck my party because I'm not prepared for a fight, etc, it's just not enjoyable. Now I learn that I'll have to fight vampires with level drain ? I don't even know how to deal with that. This game is more about reading rule books and reloading a save than actually playing the game, and lowering the difficulty makes it trivial and boring.

[SPOILERS] So I just beat this game recently, and I glitched the Balthazar encounter REALLY bad. Basically, I was doing a quest to recover the soul of a child on behalf of a man in Balthazar's town. When i did this, i madly clicked several of the sarcophagi in the top of the Lich's lair, which resulted in me entering the Monastery and he spilled the beans on him being Bhaalspawn. Bear in mind, I hadn't even touched the other two Bhaalspawn quests. As a result, I completely missed Elminster, I missed the Smuggler folks, i missed the third and fourth Bhaal Plane trials, and Saemon Havarian was nowhere to be found. Thankfully, I was still able to beat the game, but it left me with a baffling ToB experience. 😂

Stays mortal, married jaheira, later becomes a grand duke of Baldur's Gate before being murdered by the real last bhaalspawn in Baldur's Gate. Leads to the resurrection of Bhaal anyways.

@@MortismalGaming If Gorion's ward chose a mortal fate than there couldn't have been any vestiges of bhaal's essence left in him so he can't be the one who turned into the slayer when killed in "murders in baldurs gate" so it had to be viekang, but again doesn't really make sense either. How could he have escaped Melissan? as she, according to forgotten realms wiki, "cured" him of his teleporting affliction when he came to Saradush, because that's exactly where she would have wanted him to be. To perish there in the siege. Yeah sure he could possibly have escaped, but seems pretty far fetched to me. She managed to lure all the remaining bhaalspawn to their deaths except the protagonist and embodied the collective essence of bhaal. (She lured gorions ward of course but was defeated ultimately was my point) All in all, Wotc's additional writings are definitely at odds with the original games. Throne of bhaal was meant to be the *conclusion* of the bhaalspawn saga but they just kind of retconned that because no no we need to milk this story further to sell dem books. Imo video games: canon, Wotc: fan fiction.

@@maxion5109 You can cause Viekang to teleport by casting Fear on him ingame. Amelissan didn't really cure his teleportation weirdness, I think she just made him incapable of feeling fear through normal means, which the spell sorta bypasses. And I'd imagine Fear is one of the spells you'd cast once you break through the gates to help push the attack, so... Adds up imo, even if Abdel's party didn't cast it on him themselves. And I wouldn't say that Bhaal's essence within Abdel is entirely gone. He lived to be 134 years old as a human fighter. He didn't forsake his nature as a literal demigod, he just sealed up his divinity. Also it's been stated, that Bhaal existed as a vestige of sorts, kinda like Myrkul in Neverwinter Nights 2: Mask of the Betrayer and manipulated Viekang and Abdel into finally resurrecting himself fully as a deity.

@@MrKoraboras i'm not too familiar with Viekang's story other than from the video games so i guess it's technically plausible that he escaped the siege of saradush. But i have to disagree with your point on Abdel. Gorion's ward gave up his divine essence to be sealed up on mount celestial, forever preventing it from soiling further souls. He willingly gave up his power to live out his life as a mortal being, free of the taint. Any description of Bhaal still being present in him would ruin the spirit of that ending. One is ether free or not free, there's no in-between. If you whatch the throne of bhaal mortal ending video i think you'll see my point. That's why this other stuff about viekang is also at odds with it. Kind of ruins the narrative about bhaal's influence finally defeated by having this guy still running around. No bhaalspawn could have eluded deathstalker Amelyssan the blackhearted. What you're describing sound to me to be either from the novelization that was released alongside the games or what has been written *after* the games by Wotc or others, not from the original baldurs gate games. The novel was widely criticised by fans for not being consistent and accurate to the games original story and spirit. The same goes for Wotc betrayal at baldurs gate, so at this point i view the video games as a completely separate entity not connected to official Dnd lore. Hence my comment about everything that's written outside the game's story is fan fiction. For me the original baldurs gate games is the canon bhaalspawn saga and at the same time the quintessential forgotten realms storyline. No other DnD module or story comes close, not before and not after.

@@maxion5109 The divine essence here is 'divinity'. The right to take a place among the other gods. Doesn't change Abdel's race, doesn't change his father is Bhaal and doesn't sever that connection - hence why he lived for over a century as a non-magic user and was still strong enough to battle another bhaalspawn. (bhaalspawn being a subrace btw) And yes, I'm talking about post-game stuff, when it comes to the second and third paragraph. First one is from the game itself. The games and the writing were both stated to be canon, just separate canon btw. Saying the Bhaalspawn saga is the quintessential FR storyline is a bit much tho. The game is cool and the storyline as well, but it had little consequences to Faerunn, just about a couple countries in the Sword Coast got slightly ransacked, it's not something you NEED to know about when you play DnD either.

Baldur's Gate games were great on my young age, but I tried to play it after playing Pillars of eternity games and I couldn't play Baldur's Gate Enhanced version due to the old combat mechanics doesn't help much 😢
