The story of a preemie 😢

It seems all preemies ❤️ are cute, they all tug at our heart's strings - we laugh, cry and root for them. Now it's time for one of them to go. Parting hurts, and more so to a mother......

Much more wholesome to see these incredibly cute baby monkeys growing up in their natural habitat, and not being made to wear stupid clothes, diapers and made to take endless baths using chemicals they’re not accustomed to - this is REAL care for these creatures, as it should be - to just observe from a distance

Many people are not aware of the fact, but it came to the attention of those managing sanctuaries and zoo facilities that had programs where lesser primates we allowed to live in as natural a place as possible if their rehab could not reach a level where they could be released back into the wild, and in many places as possible they allowed at least some breeding to take place as adding young to groups was part of life as much as the living conditions and food that was provided. In many sanctuaries, to avoid over population it was often decided that there would be no extreme measures in place to intervene medically with sickly infants or even those abandoned, allowing the mother or family to manage things as they did in the wild. Over time one thing that weas noticed, at least with those primates that had adjusted to a semi wild life and faired well with being able to breed and give birth and provide and care for young in the same manner as those in the wild, documentation started being kept on just how primate mothers dealt with infants with issues, and what was seen in groups of some primates withsome willingly being allomothers who actually were often seen sharing around between several lactating females the feeding of an abandoned infant and how mothers would deal with ill and premature. Two of the most interesting studies were those of how preemies were handled and how infants born with life threatening or eventually terminal birth defects were cared for impacted care for preemie and sick human infants. It was actually many neinatologist and high level NICUs in several South American hospitals that paid attention and adopted care techniques modeled by many of the new world primates studied in South American sanctuaries. Later on, sanctuaries in the US, Europe, Africa and Asia started documenting similar behaviors in many species of old world primates. One thing that was noticed with premature infants, if they had reached a gestational age where they were viable and had digestive systems mature enough to digest mothers milk, and whose lungs produced enough surfactant so the air sacs in the lungs did not stick closed making breathing impossible, primate mothers could actually bring even a very early preemie through to grow up to be a healthy adult. To do this they made many changes in behavior, including doing things no one realized primates would do, and never saw a mother of a full term primate. Primate mothers of preemies were seen to keep their nipples in their infants mouths at all times, actually taking their teat and putting it back in the infants mouth if it slipped out. Observers eventually realized that preemie primates, like human ones, dud jot latch on well, or even at all and while some would suckle they did not have the energy to suckle for long but keeping a preemie on their teat meant that any suckle would give them milk can between times they suckled, the stimulation of the infants mouth abd tongue allowed caused the teat to leak milk drop by drop continously providing for the infant. As we know milk production in any mammal is stimulated by emptying of the breast and by active suckling. It was noted that mother with a preemie, if there was an older sibling weaned to make room for a new baby was often invited back to nurse and empty the breast the preemie was not attached too. For a mother with no other children and a species or troop that never shares nursing, many preemie mothers had been seen emptying their own breast to keep their milk supply going. It was also noted that Preemie were almost always clutched upright over the mother's stomach, and only moved about when the infant needed its bowels stimulated or needed cleaning from urination. Usually at the that time they documented the mother holding the infant in that upside down position to facilitate hygiene, the mother also was documented patting and massaging the infants back. This was not something mothers with full term infants was seen doing, and eventually it was learned the the mother was doing this to help keep the infants lungs clear as preemies are notorious for having little cough reflex to clear fluid from their lungs. Also, being held upside down caused an infant to have to take deeper breaths as the abdominal contents puts pressure on the diaphragm and this opens the little air sacs in the lungs that may not have opened or had closed. Primates with preemies also are often seen rocking side to side or front to back, and this has actually been proven to hel regulate infant breathing and why incubators or heated beds with rockers were developed. It was also documented that mother's of preemies tend to isolate themselves and the infant, often quickly moving away unless its one of their own children mist likely as primates are interested in infants and will want to try to hold the infant, while the mother wants the infant to remain on her chest, to maintain the correct body temperature as preemie do not regulate their own body temp, and sudden changes in body temp can be detrimental to a premature infant. And the mothers of premature primates seem to understand that their infant is not going to do well with rough play others often try with infants. Some primate species have been noted to actually put on a heavier coat after giving birth prematurely, or growing a thicker thatch of hair across their chest and abdomen. In one study, breast molk samples were analyzed from a mother that delivered a premature infant, barely considered viable according to gestational age. The milk was vety much like colostrum for several days more than would happen with a full term infant, and as the it changed more like a milk it had a much higher calorie count but the milk stayed lower in some if the harder to digest product. Then as the infant grew the milk changed, more from something that was providing easy to digest energy to nutrients for growth and adding a good fat layer and promoting development of other systems. Many of the things that they started doing with preemies and sick infants from doing skin to skin to help regulate body temp, rocking or using rocker beds to help regulate breathing, positioning and massage to help theem clear their lungs and stimulate the taking of deeper breaths, even the make up of preemie formulas and when formula or breast kill is started, come from studying primates with preemies, especially, as primate mothers statistically have a high success rate of bringing preemies through as long a the infant has no other issues except just being born early.

Thank you for taking the time to share the information concerning premature births in primates and how much the medical community benefited from paying attention. It makes me wonder how much has been missed because of preconceived ideas of the supposed superiority of man. Edit: I came here again to read someone else’s comment and read this article through a second time and am so in awe of monkeys ability to successfully keep preemies alive and well.

Always very bittersweet when the boys grow up, their coming of age period is chaotic and it's the reason that on average the females have longer lifespans than the males, some boys just don't make it. Not all sad though. Vast majority of the time they end up in the bachelor troops with older brothers and old playmates, they have better lives there because the older boys are very fair and understand the struggle. It makes me think of Gypsy's boys who all joined the same bachelor troop, they're pretty much stuck together like glue and extremely protective of each other. I do hope for the best for Pucky, it looks like he's already been accepted into a bachelor troop and we can assume that his brother Bocky is nearby and his little brother Spikey will join him sometime next year. Even if he can't defend himself well, he'll never be alone if he sticks with them.

They often get pushed to the periphery of the troop first but not everyone gets that courtesy. It's the high ranking females who make the decision or the alpha female herself but she gets support from all the other females in the troop in her decision making. They chase them away or very clearly point them in the direction of the periphery by showing them aggressively or chasing them or both. It also happens that older males in the troop chase them away but not without the consensus of the alpha female. 🤓🇸🇪

Been a while since I've seen any of your videos and they're really informative, Dopey has really grown and is a really good looking monkey, this is how the monkeys should be viewed, Dopey Batty and Teeny are my favourite ones to watch.

I'm not sure what you asking, but preemie means born prematurely, and Pucky was a preemie (not Preemie)!
