The stolen children from La Réunion | DW Documentary
Emile Hoarau wants to finally face his past. He was nine years old when authorities on the French island of Réunion took him away from his family. Instead of a brighter future, a long ordeal awaited him
At the time, around two thousand children like Emile were torn from their families. Like the others, Emile’s family was promised a good education for him, and a good income later on. That was more than 60 years ago: whether Emile's relatives actually agreed is now hard to verify. One thing is certain: At first, Emile was not given the chance to pursue an education in France. For years, he had to work hard in the fields of Réunion. Even when he finally arrived in France, he was sent to a children's home. To this day, he suffers from the experiences of that time, but he now wants to reconcile with his past. He decides to return to his native Réunion for the first time. DW’s Lisa Louis accompanies him.

Yup.never leaves you.
Must be so painful to be seperated from your family for 50-60 years 😕
This is so sad. How could they treat other humans like this? Humans continue to do this now. So cruel
Despicable corruption of child abuse. It is time people are brought to account.

if the perpetrators are already deceased, those who hold the same name as they can be held accountable. the riches gained from this cruelty, passed on as riches to a generation. that generation can be called to task. or at least do some returning. even if is Dignity. not everyone is asking for money. sometimes being aware our predecessors did some heinous..causes a reasonable response. those who harmed these children, if deceased, those who hold their name be held accountable.

remember: the worst things people done were done with the best intentions sometimes there is selfish agenda, but it is always presented as something "important" or "beneficial to all of us"
That is so terrible why??? .In Canada 🇨🇦 was the same take children from their parents they are abused , tortured , and killed them
Amazing !!! Very Sad
So much touching..
That's how colonials ( no matter which country they came from) treated human beings at that time!... Terrible, and still people are being treated badly....
Let's go watching now

@DW.... I wish this complete version would have been shown on the focus on Europe program where I first saw this. This was a lot more detailed. Why was the version on focus on Europe so much shorter?
This could have been a nice documentary, if only the emphasis would have been on the story. Less emotional snippets, more facts.

Why is this important documentary so short, de has the resources to make 1 hour long documentaries to find faults where there weren't any in Bolivia but only 12 minutes for this clear and inhumane practice.

This was a desert island before the French came in. Many locals are french people who settles there centuries ago. By the way, the word "Creoles" even mean "White peoples born on the island".

These kind of things happens everywhere sadly. Look at Boko Haram abducting 100s of innocent school children every year. It's really sickening. Today, 167 countries still have some form of modern slavery, which affects an estimated 46 million people worldwide. Modern slavery can be difficult to detect and recognize in many cases. This is because slavery has moved underground in most countries

@@nilajakamau7854 yeah may be true, but I could name 30 other countries and places doing the same. Ongoing wars and ethics violence in Africa, North Korea, war Yemen, Muslims in China, Kashmir India, Israel- Palestine, Christian persecution in Middle East, gender violence and murder of women in South America, Haiti, Kurds living in Turkey, refugee camps in Greece.
