    Stig, you crack me up. It’s always interesting and often people outside of aviation don’t know. While you’re talking about the wipers, you can talk about the “Airplane Rain X” and what it’s used for. To be fair though, the coffee pots aren’t tossed. If inop, they go to the refurb shop to get worked on. But, we can’t cancel a flight for lack of coffee. The monitors might go back to get worked on or not. Probably a cost thing, don’t know what American does. Talk about the fasteners on aircraft. They aren’t from Home Depot. Keep up the great work…

    Some of those items, such as the coffee maker, are repairable. So, indeed, the initial procurement cost is high but it’s not that expensive each time it has to be replaced. Toilet seats and windshield wiper blades are classified as expendable and not repairable. The cost of the windshield or radar transceiver would be an eye opener for some of your readers. Engine and landing gear overhauls are very expensive for airlines. Heavy maintenance visits cost millions of dollars. Aviation is big business. In return we get to safely travel between continents in less than half a day, in pressurized comfort while eating dinner and watching a movie. Fun videos!

    Eh, My Dear Stig; you've forgotten the 'get the part here quickly, LET'S HAVE SOME FUN!! Option'; it's written on the clipboard that you left behind, in the 'port can', next to the 'In Case Toilet Tissue Runs Out - EMERGENCY KIT' knapsack velcro/sticky thing-ed to the wall; you know, the bag with the corncobs inside??!! It's "EMPTY", you say?? Okay, then grab the envelope behind the Playboy Magazine - AND - the Sudoku book, GREAT!, you've found it! Now grab the black crayon, or a black Sharpie and copy, 'Letter-for-Letter: "Captain's Side Pressurized Windscreen Thingy, with the Black Licorice stuck to it"; and "Switchy thing, labeled: L WIPER + PARK - INT - LOW - HI" written on it, yep, that one. Write, using block/print-style letters, (Really big letters!), Got this so far, good, we're almost there, write the letters "A.O.G. - STAT:"; Next, affix lockout tags to the (all are caged) "APU-START'; "ENGINE No 1-START"; and "ENGINE No 2-START" switches. Nice Job, Stig! You'll need to do is print-out a parts request, (still in black), fill-out the P/N# and QTY-Required slots/lines; okay, that looks great. Eh, now for that last step, grab a red Sharpie or crayon, and as much as the blank space allows, write the letters, in 'term' format, AOG-STAT. Great!, now we can sit-back and watch the presentation by the "Must Be There In 24 Hours Or Less" ballet participants tap-dance the rest of this saga thru completion. Now, for the fun part: When the courier arrives tomorrow with the requested parts, watch as they go like this: kzread.info/dash/bejne/d4R8k7CanZycaLQ.html (and the BEST thing is - that YOU'LL be the only one who'll know why the "hand-carried/delivered" courier is singing that tune!!!) You may wanna consider starting a "Buy Me A Coffee" account! In all sincerity, the flying public should know, in an as-close-as-possible to true reality and/or manner, just how complex it can be at times - to maintain an airliner's READY TO FLY status, and the lengths, at times, which several persons/companies/couriers must resort to, in a combined effort which is sometimes necessary to keep airlines and their flights 'within an on-time status allowance', and minimize any delays with regards to both aircraft which are 'at the ramp', or 'parked'. IT AIN'T EASY!!

    I was involved in maintenance of an expensive thing in a hospital. Some lights went out and they weren't in storage. A bit frustrated I said that can't we just go to the home market that has all the diy-stuff incl little warning light parts? Apparently we couldn't ;) (And no we didn't, we never did. It was just this specific little machine that you could look at and it would beep error messages. Anything showing error message would lock up the entire unit and not work until the issue had been resolved. It's the standard one expects in a hospital but well, a bit frustrating).

  • @StigAviation

    @StigAviation

    I can totally understand that one, everything has to be very specific and type certified for that specific equipment

  • @jneill

    @jneill

    5 ай бұрын

    Absolutely! You'd get a cascade effect of sorts. Fix thing A, but now thing B is failing and if thing B isn't working thing C will lock the whole thing down until A, B and C is fixed and with one error message at a time. Not entirely clear when more parts than one needed replacement. It was common practise to change one part so error message for thing A didn't necessarily mean thing B or C was also in error. Sometimes it felt like I was dealing with an office printer that you had to make sacrifices to in order to get it to work properly. @@StigAviation
