The Steel Watch Game Bully!! - Patek Philippe Nautilus 5990!

When I think of the Patek Philippe Nautilus the first obvious thing that comes to mind is value. The second thing that comes to my mind is how comfortable these watches are. If you have had the chance tower one before you would agree. This particular model I have featured in this video is the Nautilus 5990. This is the latest and greatest steel model from the Nautilus line up. At first glance many would say they all look the same, but if you look closer you will see that this is not your average Nautilus. One of the first things that stands out is then dual sun dials. The one at six o'clock is for the chrono function while the other on top is for the date. This dual sub dial is both a love and hate for me with this model. I tend to prefer the look of the Nautilus 5980 sub dial best. This change still does not deter me from loving this watch. Besides it having a chrono function this watch also has a travel time complication, pretty much a GMT. The second 12hr hands are adjusted using the two push buttons located on the nine o'clock side of the case. They have been very cleverly hidden to appear like its is just the side of the case. I like the look but hate the function. I feel that it gets pushed very easy and find my self having to correct it pretty often. Overall the Nautilus 5990 is a serious heavy hitter. Its basically a bully in the stainless steel game. With prices reaching $100k for a stainless steel model. It definitely is not for the faint of heart, or the weak wallet. For me its the perfect blend of style, status and class.

The fact that currently a 5711 is going for 5990 prices is insane!! The 5990 is on another level of steel heavy hitters
Great job Eric. Love the channel. In 2014 I passed on a SS 5980 from an AD in Las Vagas because the 35k was too expensive! later in 2015 I bought a RG 5712 that I kept for a few years. Luckily it appreciated enough a few years later, so I traded it for a SS 5990 that was about 52k at that time. Only one problem... every time I looked at the gray- black dial over the next year, I kept thinking about the beautiful blue dial of the 5980. The 5990 also appreciated so I did what all of us obsessive watch collectors do, I sold it and bought a 2006 SS 5980 blue dial with the Geneva Seal. I now sleep much better!!

Nice review. I wear a 5990 for more than a year now and I never (really never) pushed the travel time buttons by mistake. I really like this watch. Discrete and a lot of wrist presence at the same time.

Very cool video! "5990 El Jefe" awesome description, you cracked me up. Validating what you just mentioned in your video, after buying several watches from my AD including a 5711/1A in 2012 and a GMT-Master II 126710 Pepsi in 2020, I went ahead and inquired for the "5990 El Jefe", I was told as a courtesy for being a good and long-standing costumer they will kindly register my interest, PP ensures they only take delivery of three a year. It is a very hard to get watch indeed.
Great review as always Eric. As you said, I recently had to purchase a 5524 to start my Patek “Journey” with my local AD back in 🇬🇧. I thought I’d immediately feel cheated however that wasn’t the case. I love it. Any chance of a review on a 5524 as like you say, most people aren’t getting straight into a Nautilus of any kind. Keep up the great work 💪🏽

Tried on both and still prefer 5980/1A over 5990/1A. 5980 had better proportion like you said. The blue dial+white subdial design of 5980 is also more mesmerizing than the grey dial of 5990.
Reviews like before! I like this style. Which do you like better, Eric? This or the AP Skeleton in steel?

Well... to be honest that would be my least favorite Nautilus, it’s still a great timepiece, but as I have a different taste (and a smaller wrist 😤) I would stick to the 5711 or the 5980 which are killer pieces. Congratulations on another great video Eric!

You just have good taste. The nautilus silhouette in itself is ACTUALLY goofy (border lining ugly af) as it is. The 5990 exacerbâtes this by crowding the dial. I’ve said it a million times, if it said Girard Perregaux on the dial you wouldn’t be able to sell this watch. royal oak is worth the hype, but the nautilus is a piece of shit just because it has PP on the dial.
Awesome video, Can you make a video talking about patek discontinuing the nautilus? I think these watch will keep going up in price in a near future
It’s interesting that you brought this subject up that PP is very sought after in the last 4 years. I don’t think anyone can just walk into an AD to pick up a steel piece. Just the the Rolex sports steel. Yet I hear so often people bagging Rolex for this and very rarely do I hear the same for PP. 🤔 Nice watch.

Such a sick piece...one of the only true “one and done” watches. I think the premium price is justified when you think this watch is a GMT, Chrono, and Nautilus. GMT Pepsi is selling at $18-20k, Daytona is $22-25k, and 5711 is going nuts at over $100k...the 5990 does it all at $100k and destroys anything else in the room while being a stealthy piece. Damn.

correct, however the Nautilus has grown in me. I wish they combine the form factor of natilus with the dial and movement of 5270 or the calatrava.
I only like 5711 and 5990 in PVD coated.
Which bracelet is more comfy, the nautilus's or the royal oaks's

@@WatchEric gotcha, I believe these two have the best bracelets in the market right now. In terms of looks and comfort. Well, a jubilee is like super flexible too but doesn't look as good or elegant as the APs or Pateks
no-watch is the most comfortable watch. i love this watch. but like the 5711 more.

I pretty much prefer 5990 over the 5980. Its either this or 5711. But with 80-100k usd i rather get a 5990 over 5711 atm.. the 5711 prices r just not realistic, trading above 5712 at my country lol. I have 2 ss daytonas , exp2, but looking for my first patek. Really want a nautilus but man the prices r whacked now lol

somehow this watch doesn't look like having a soul for me (don't get me wrong, I only collect PP and Rolex and I love both) it's one of the most complicated patek but the dial just misses something that will catch your eye right away look like a watch put up with tons of functionality maybe some day I will change the way I feel about it but for now it's the least sexy nautilus for me... (5980 1AR or 1R is great)
No current production model watch is worth double retail!! that said, I've got one extra kidney I don't need that I can trade LOL :-) 5980 or 5990 I don't mind ;-)
