To get the fretboard and neck not to move around while gluing I use an index pin in the nut slot which makes the fretboard rotate on an axis and I only have to worry about the heel matching up while clamping.

I used to do it that way. Salt is way easier.

This is a great series Chris. Your work is impressive. I’d love a video on how you got here. What started you making guitars, and what were you doing before you started? Are you a guitar player that just wanted to make guitars for yourself? Or, did you always have making custom guitars for sale in mind? Is/was your profession unrelated to craftsmanship? Did you start in a little home workshop? What were your first tools? Y’know.. like that. That would be interesting.

Wow, okay, that's a really thick finish, but good calculations. I like a lot of finish, personally. I play punk, lol. I'm a chef by trade, for decades. Using salt for grip makes perfect sense to me, that's what you do when you spill oil on the kitchen floor. Wipe up what you can, then throw down a couple fistfulls of kosher salt.

Great content, really helpful! As I'm doing my first build I have made the same tools as you showed now to hold the neck. Looks like I'm on the right track :)

Great video as usual Chris! Watching you glue the fretboard to the neck, I thought maybe you could use short dowel pins to line the two up centrally down the length of the neck. The dowel holes could be cut during the routing. Or maybe I am over thinking this! Cheers keep up the fantastic work.:)

Thanks Chris! If I don't have a fixture and clamping caul like that, do you think that something like a StewMac sanding block would work?

I don't think it's long enough and it won't focus clamping pressure along the edges.

It's a Central Machinery #32208 with the optional riser kit. I bought it from Harbor Freight about 18 years ago.
